hi Dave Taylor here and this time I'm
0:12
looking at the Kindle Fire
0:15
hd8 that's this guy and you can see I'm
0:18
busy reading the book it's pretty
0:20
typical but here's what's cool about
0:22
this is that this is actually now a full
0:25
Android tablet so you actually get
0:28
regular Android interface and there's a
0:30
ton of apps it also comes with a good
0:32
web browser email calendar system so it
0:36
can do a whole lot more than just ebooks
0:38
in fact you can do movies TV shows I
0:42
mean really it is a full fully
0:44
functional tablet with this really
0:46
beautiful big 8 in screen and it's kind
0:49
of funny Dimensions if you can look you
0:51
can see it's a little skinny but it does
0:55
end up duplicating like one side of a
0:57
traditional hardback book which I think
0:59
is probably their design intention
1:01
Kindle also there is a 10-in version so
1:04
it's a little bit bigger same sort of
1:06
odd tall Dimensions um but let's go
1:09
through some of the specs while we have
1:12
it first off orange how's that for cool
1:15
it's not the boring colors in fact the
1:18
hd8 comes in Black magenta blue and this
1:22
isn't orange this is Tangerine now
1:25
here's what's funny is that Amazon sent
1:27
us a cover in green so why I would put a
1:31
green cover on a tangerine tablet I'm
1:33
not sure but the tablet itself is so
1:36
well-designed and tough too Amazon says
1:39
that it's twice as durable as a as the
1:42
most recent of the Apple iPads so that's
1:44
pretty nice because these things do end
1:46
up taking a bit of a beating so um
1:49
that's a nice feature it has like I said
1:51
an 8in display with over a million
1:54
pixels so it's at 1280 by 800 and if you
1:57
think through your numbers that makes it
1:59
better than 1080p which is nice so if
2:02
you're watching a movie on it and I
2:04
can't really show you because of
2:06
licensed rights with movies but if
2:07
you're watching a movie on it's going to
2:08
look very good uh has a quad core 1.5
2:12
GHz processor so it's pretty Speedy if
2:15
you're used to older Kindles where you
2:17
like switch apps and you wait and you
2:20
want to go to the next page of the book
2:21
and you wait this is all very Zippy and
2:24
in fact the book reading experience on
2:26
it as you would expect for it being an
2:28
Amazon Kindle is beautiful it's really
2:30
really nice it's quick you can do all
2:33
sorts of type faces all the stuff you
2:35
can do in the Kindle app but really
2:36
really fast uh let's see it has a 5
2:40
megapixel rear-facing camera and the
2:43
front-facing camera it just says is HD
2:46
but I honestly I don't take a lot of
2:48
selfies and if I do take selfies I'm
2:50
probably not taking them with my tablet
2:52
so not sure that's a selling point but
2:55
here's what is a selling point is that
2:57
the default memory in these guys are8
2:59
gig or 16 gig but unlike iPads and a lot
3:03
of other thirdparty tablets what the
3:06
Amazon Kindle can do is it can actually
3:08
let you add a Micro SD card now once you
3:11
have one of those little tiny little SD
3:13
cards then you can actually get up to
3:15
128 additional gigabyt of storage which
3:19
means that if you really want to have
3:21
all Six Star Wars movies to watch while
3:23
you're waiting in line to see the force
3:26
awakens yet another time you could do
3:29
that you could have all the Lord of the
3:31
Rings movies you could have I don't know
3:33
Fast and Furious series all 26 James
3:36
Bond movies there's a lot of storage
3:38
space here if you're really into books
3:40
you could have all of them okay maybe
3:42
not all of them but you could certainly
3:43
have a lot of books on here too 128 gig
3:47
plus the built-in 16 gig gives you a lot
3:49
of Headroom there and it's running so I
3:51
said it's running Android but it's
3:53
really not it's running Amazon's version
3:55
of Android which they call fire OS and
3:58
this is fire OS S 5 and I have to say if
4:01
you're used to the old fire OS which was
4:04
like the old Kindle operating system
4:06
where it's the Carousel and you swipe to
4:08
find your book and everything this is
4:10
much more of a sort of normal Computing
4:12
experience which I prefer actually I
4:14
like knowing that things that I've
4:16
learned on my computer or on my
4:18
smartphone or on other tablets apply to
4:20
how I use this tablet so that's really
4:23
nice too um battery Wise It's about 8
4:26
hours of usage depending on what you're
4:27
doing so that might not take you all the
4:30
way from LA to London but pretty close
4:34
pretty close and it has a nice feel to
4:37
it so the colors are actually Plastics
4:40
but it's a pretty tough and durable
4:42
plastic though I will say if you go and
4:45
look on
4:46
amazon.com there are some people that
4:48
have some concerns with build quality
4:50
and longevity of these devices honestly
4:54
I think most of these are kind of
4:55
designed to last just a couple of years
4:57
anyway with the assumption that hey
4:59
you're going to up up grade cuz you got
5:00
bigger better faster stronger if you are
5:03
the kind of person that holds on to a
5:04
device forever you might want to pay
5:06
close attention to that not just with
5:08
this but with every one of the modern
5:10
devices that are out I just I don't
5:12
think modern devices are designed to
5:13
last 5 or 10 years so you can probably
5:16
get a good long lifetime out of it if
5:18
you nurse it and you're very careful
5:19
with it maybe have it in some really
5:21
cool green
5:23
case
5:25
but I haven't had any issues with it and
5:27
I find it to work very very well
5:30
and it's a very good price point if
5:31
you're used to the cost of things like
5:33
Apple iPads you'll be very impressed
5:36
that this with its nice 8in HD screen
5:39
runs 149 bucks and for 8 gig or 169 for
5:44
16 gig again you can also add a Micro SD
5:47
card to get considerably more
5:49
storage and it's a Kindle and it's fast
5:52
it's light and what I do is I always
5:55
have one of these devices in my computer
5:57
bag so if I find that I have some
5:59
downtime or I need to take a little
6:01
break from looking at computer screens I
6:03
then look at this screen now to be fair
6:06
again this is a regular tablet screen
6:08
this is not like their paper white which
6:10
is a different kind of Amazon Kindle
6:13
that uses the eink technology that's a
6:16
very different thing from your the way
6:17
that your eyes work sort of
6:19
physiologically because it's not
6:21
emitting light it's reflecting so it's
6:23
much more like a regular book would be
6:25
it's a very different experience but
6:27
it's a black and white device with some
6:29
gray scales so you're not watching
6:31
movies on a eink device this is not
6:33
going to look good so this is much more
6:35
of a nice general purpose tablet I
6:38
really like it I like the whole Kindle
6:40
line actually and I'm a huge reader and
6:43
an avid fan I'm Amazon Prime I think
6:46
I've been a member since the day they
6:47
announced it um so tons of content tons
6:50
of things to do with this you're never
6:53
really lonely because you can always
6:54
find something to watch or something to
6:56
read I guess that's good
6:59
um Amazon Kindle Fire
7:03
hd8 149 bucks with 8 gig 169 with 16 gig
7:09
this is Dave Taylor and I got to get
7:11
back to my book and I'll see you in my
7:13
next video
