May 29, 2025
A bright, vivid screen, solid camera tech from partner Leica, and a fingerprint sensor that works really well all add to the draw of the Huawei Mate 10 Pro Android smartphone. In fact, there's lots to like about this flagship model from the somewhat beleaguered company (at least in the USA), but there are some surprising omissions and quirks that you'll want to know about before you decide it's the next phone on your want list. Tech expert Dave Taylor of https://www.AskDaveTaylor.com/ tests out the Huawei Mate 10 Pro and finds that there's a lot he likes, including the Emotion UI on top of the latest version of Android. But would he keep it as his main phone... ? Learn more at https://www.huawei.com/ or https://www.bestbuy.com/

Dave Taylor here and I'm looking at the
0:13
huawei mate 10 Pro that's this and I
0:16
want to start out right off the top by
0:18
saying that no major US carriers are
0:21
currently carrying the Huawei line and
0:24
there's various reasons for that you can
0:26
go in research but you can still buy
0:28
these very nice phones through other
0:30
outlets like Best Buy
0:32
so the mate 10 Pro is their new flagship
0:36
now this is a big term in the industry
0:38
the flagship means it's the best phone
0:41
they have it has everything they can
0:42
possibly put on it and this one
0:45
definitely covers all of that so let's
0:47
start out with the processing and the
0:49
CPU and everything this features the
0:51
Huawei Kiran 970 AI processor plus an
0:56
octa-core ARM Cortex CPU and a Mali g72
1:01
12 core GPU and a neural net processing
1:05
unit pretty sure this thing is going to
1:07
turn into the Terminator at some point
1:10
but in any case it has a whole lot of
1:13
computing power jammed into this tiny
1:15
little form factor it also has 6
1:17
gigabytes of RAM and 128 gigabytes of
1:21
ROM that is not bad but really where
1:25
this shines is the display and it has a
1:27
full view 16 by 9 a.m. o LED screen
1:31
AMOLED never really know how to
1:33
pronounce that but it has HDR 10 support
1:36
and it's a 2160 by 1080 at 402 pixels
1:42
per inch that's pretty nice overall the
1:45
screen really pops and I have to say
1:48
that's really the best one or one of the
1:50
best features of this phone there's not
1:52
much you can bring up that doesn't look
1:54
gorgeous and you can see even just the
1:56
wallpapers just come in really just pop
1:58
it's very bright now the battery is
2:01
another really nice feature here so this
2:03
features a four thousand milliamp hour
2:06
battery which gives you 20 plus hours of
2:09
battery life better it's a fast charge
2:12
so it 10 min
2:14
you can charge it up 20% and 30 minutes
2:16
of charge will give you 55 to 60 percent
2:19
charge total that is really nice which
2:22
means you can give it a quick top-up
2:23
during lunch and it's going to be great
2:25
now one of the other big parts of any
2:28
smart phone nowadays is the camera
2:30
technology and what Huawei did is they
2:33
went to Leica really a classic brand and
2:36
they said Leica give us some camera
2:38
technology so like I did and they have
2:41
these summer luxe H lens system at an F
2:44
1.6 which gives you a 12 megapixel RGB
2:48
and 20 mega pixel monochrome with image
2:53
stabilization and all sorts of cool
2:54
stuff so let me show you a couple of
2:56
examples first this is a video that I
2:59
shot and as you can see it's crystal
3:01
clear really nice and then here's a
3:04
photograph and again it's captured the
3:06
water in motion it's really just nice
3:09
and crisp it does a very nice job with
3:11
photography and it has slow motion video
3:14
which is really cool on the camera but
3:17
when you then save it or port it on to
3:18
another computer then unfortunately it's
3:20
just a regular video this is true of
3:22
most of the smartphones and how they do
3:24
slow-mo which is kind of a drag I think
3:26
they need to figure that out
3:27
and so let's see so we have all of that
3:31
and then the other thing that's
3:32
interesting about this is Huawei has its
3:34
own UI on top of Android so this is
3:38
running Android 8.0 Oreo which is nice
3:41
but on top of that they installed what
3:44
they call the emotion UI or emui 8.0 and
3:48
that gives you a kind of different look
3:50
and feel than you typically see on an
3:53
Android phone
3:53
but it gives you lots of different
3:55
themes and it makes it really quick and
3:57
easy for you to do all sorts of neat
3:58
things also water and dust resistant I
4:02
have not tested that as I would as you
4:05
would expect because I don't want to
4:06
have this thing break on me but it's
4:08
good to know they're resistant I would
4:09
like to see it become fully water andrás
4:12
dust proof but that's another piece of
4:15
engineering now on the downside one of
4:18
the things that you immediately notice
4:19
when you look at all the ports and
4:21
here's a close-up of the bottom but
4:23
what's missing there's no headphone jack
4:26
like a lot of modern smartphones they're
4:29
using bluetooth but to their credit
4:31
Huawei also does include earbuds that
4:35
have interestingly a USBC connection on
4:38
them and USBC is the connection dujour
4:41
so that is also how you charge this so
4:44
if you have all those micro USB finally
4:47
you don't have to worry about
4:48
orientation
4:49
finally finally so that's cool the other
4:52
thing that surprised me about this
4:54
though is there's no Qi charging for a
4:56
phone that's a flagship phone from a
4:58
really big electronics company I really
5:00
thought it would give me wireless
5:02
charging and it doesn't so if that's
5:04
something super important to you know
5:06
that the mate 10 Pro does not have that
5:08
feature on the other hand what it does
5:11
have is it does have a fingerprint
5:12
scanner smack dab in the middle of the
5:14
back and it works really well pretty
5:17
much 100% of the time if I touch that
5:19
back then the phone's unlocked instantly
5:21
very nice some of the other Android
5:24
phones fingerprint scanner doesn't quite
5:26
work as well so it goes so all that we
5:29
have left to talk about is the price but
5:31
before we get to the price let me ask if
5:33
you can click on that subscribe button
5:34
and if you want and you're so inspired
5:37
give me a thumbs up super appreciated
5:39
now the price comes in blue and this is
5:43
a blue it's hard to see here and brown
5:46
and grey and you can pick it up at Best
5:49
Buy calm the huawei mate 10 Pro will
5:52
cost you six hundred and forty-nine
5:54
dollars at Best Buy comm so this is Dave
5:58
Taylor I'm gonna go back to exploring
6:00
some of the video features on this mate
6:02
10 Pro and I will catch you in my next
6:05
video
