With an office full of Apple iPads, Samsung Galaxy Tabs and other tablets running Android and Windows, all of which have the Kindle app, why would anyone buy a single-function Kindle tablet? Dave Taylor -- of http://www.AskDaveTaylor.com/ -- looks closely at the Kindle PaperWhite and is quite surprised to find that it's a splendid product with a truly remarkable eInk display. And he just might change your mind about Kindles too...

hi Dave Taylor here again and this time
0:12
I want to talk about the kindle now this
0:15
is the kindle paperwhite and you're
0:17
thinking a kindle seriously there is a
0:19
ton of amazing tablets out there either
0:22
iOS tablets if you have the money or
0:24
Android tablets ranging from like 50
0:27
bucks on up to many hundreds of dollars
0:29
there's lots of great stuff there's the
0:31
Microsoft Surface all of these and they
0:33
all run the kindle app so why have a
0:35
kindle device so it turns out this is
0:38
the kindle paperwhite and this is a
0:41
really interesting device because it
0:42
uses the e-ink technology so if you can
0:45
see on the screen i'm going to turn it
0:48
on and it does a sort of weird thing
0:53
between screens and the reason for that
0:56
is because it's a very very high
0:58
contrast screen with no glare you can
1:00
see you're not seeing much of any glare
1:03
at all if i did the same thing with my
1:04
ipad all you'd see were all the lights
1:07
that i'm using and my camera and all
1:09
this stuff this turns out to be a great
1:11
device it's extremely light it's about 7
1:14
ounces total so I mean honestly this
1:17
compared to a can of soda the soda wins
1:19
heavier and it's just incredibly easy to
1:23
work with one charge will last you
1:25
probably a month or two it will easily
1:27
go through an entire book and that means
1:30
that this is the kind of thing you can
1:31
just leave in your purse in your
1:32
briefcase in your backpack and anytime
1:35
you have a few minutes you pull it out
1:36
and I have oh I don't know about 25
1:40
books on here right now and tons of
1:41
space to spare I really really like it
1:44
and if I open up a book and I just
1:46
tapped it to open it so here we are in
1:50
the book and its first thing it tells me
1:52
is you're reading this book on another
1:54
device and on the other device you've
1:56
gotten further so one thing I really
1:59
like is that the kindle software keeps
2:01
everything in sync which is nice so i
2:03
don't have to have this to be
2:05
progressing in the book i'm reading and
2:07
then when you're reading a book and i'll
2:09
give you a quick close up here is you
2:12
can do things like tapping
2:13
hold on a word and get a definition now
2:16
further not only can you get a
2:18
definition it can also look it up in
2:20
Wikipedia which means that as you're
2:23
reading a book or as your child might be
2:25
reading a book they're really getting to
2:27
learn and get a lot more interesting
2:29
information really nice I'm really
2:31
actually quite astonished at how much I
2:33
like this paper white there's just
2:35
something about this screen it's very
2:37
bright very vivid very high contrast
2:41
it's at 300 DPI so the type looks really
2:45
good if you saw the first generation of
2:47
kindle this is way better than that now
2:51
it's only a six inch screen so it's not
2:53
very big but if you were to hold this up
2:55
next to a regular paperback it's about
2:57
the same size but imagine a paperback
2:59
book that's seven ounces that's this
3:01
thin and that actually happens to
3:04
contain 20 or 30 or 40 books it's pretty
3:06
nice deal and like i said the charge
3:09
lasts forever and here's the even better
3:12
part it's a hundred and twenty bucks oh
3:14
sorry 119 bucks at amazon.com will get
3:17
you the kindle paperwhite and this is
3:20
the most popular of the kindle devices
3:22
that amazon sells and when you have just
3:25
a little time to look at the screen and
3:27
to look at the contrast you'll
3:28
understand why it's really something if
3:31
you're used to the screens that are on
3:33
the ipad or android tablets or something
3:36
this is just so much more readable it's
3:38
so much more comfortable for your eyes
3:40
and it has a backlight to which is kind
3:43
of cool so this works just as well at
3:45
night in bed in the dark room as it does
3:48
in the middle of a day by the pool or by
3:51
the beach if only we had a beach here in
3:55
the sunshine I mean it really is a very
3:57
nice device I'm very very impressed so
4:00
the kindle paperwhite at amazon com
4:03
they'll be very happy to give you more
4:05
information about it this is dave taylor
4:06
and i think i need to get back to my
4:08
book so i'll catch you in my next video
4:11
