If you want to upgrade your desktop microphone then you'll want to check out the Tonor ORCA-001 USB Desktop Microphone. Text expert Dave Taylor tests it out with a focus on the Active Noise Cancellation system that lowers ambient environmental noise. Does it work? Listen for yourself and decide. The Tonor ORCA-001 also features 48kHz sampling, a zero-latency 3.5mm monitor plug, and compatibility with PC, Mac, Playstation, and Android.

Cool looking microphone, but how does it sound
0:02
Let's check it out. Dave Taylor here, and I'm checking out this
0:12
This is the Toner, Orca-001 USB desktop microphone. And as you can see, it's a pretty cool-looking device
0:21
Now, they've really put some thought into the engineering. So you'll notice it has these little red straps on the sides
0:28
And that's because the microphone is suspended in the middle of its stand
0:34
That gives it a little bit of acoustic buffering from ambient noises and vibrations
0:40
and things that could be picked up otherwise from the desktop. Now, obviously, podcasters and gamers are going to love this particular device
0:49
And that gives you a little bit of buffering so you don't constantly hear click, click, click, click, click, click
0:56
So that's a really cool thing. Now, let me give you some specs
1:00
It has a 48 kilohertz sampling rate, 50 hertz to 16,000 hertz
1:05
So you've got a really big dynamic room there. You can actually record music if you're singing, playing guitar, or flute, or a harp
1:14
If you happen to have a harp handing, you know, sitting around, you can record all of that
1:19
Sensitivities, minus 38 decibels plus or minus three. Signal to noise ratios, 95 decibels
1:26
and one of the really cool things it has, it has active noise canceling
1:30
So there's a button on the bottom that if you push it, it will actually try to remove some of the ambient noise in your environment
1:38
We're going to test that out in just a minute. So one tap mute on the top, you tap it and you tap it again
1:44
and it's unmuted, easy as it gets. There's an RGB volume indicator
1:49
You can see it here. If I change the volume, it changes colors
1:53
I think you need to sort of learn the sequence of colors and how they relate to volume
2:00
And you're wondering, volume of what? The answer is volume of your headphones
2:04
You can use an audio monitor on the bottom is USBC, and this cable's included, I'll show you that in a second
2:11
So USBC and a 3 millimeter AUX plug and that handy if you happen to have a pair of headphones and you want to monitor what you actually saying and what the microphone picking up
2:24
You can plug them in. It's a zero latency connection, and then you can make sure you
2:28
understand what is actually being broadcast or being recorded or being sent out
2:34
So really cool. I want to make one more point is that it's a cardioid pickup pattern
2:38
So that means you don't want to talk into this. You want to talk here
2:42
So the easy way to do that is to just simply make sure that the microphone is facing you, right
2:50
That seems pretty easy. But a lot of people I see don't quite understand where the optimal pickup spot is
2:56
Easy way to remember this. If the lights are facing you, you're doing it right
3:02
So it also works with PC and Mac and PlayStation's and Android
3:08
And I want to show you, it's a pretty slick braided cable it comes with, nice and long
3:12
You should be able to plug it into the back of your desktop PC if you have one of those
3:17
And it's USBA on this end, the rectangle, but with a little bit of fiddling, it becomes USBC
3:25
So it is, for all intents and purposes, a USBC to USBC cable. Great
3:32
Now, what I'm going to do to test it is I'm going to plug it in. And I happen to have a new Lenovo Yoga, which is a lovely computer here
3:42
So what I'm going to do is I'm going to open it up, log in, and I'm going to use sound recorder
3:48
So I'm going to just spin this around so you can see what it's doing
3:53
And so here's sound recorder. And now the great challenge I have is to actually use the cursor upside down
4:02
There we go. So the microphone is ready. It's in a good position
4:07
It's about, I don't know, eight to ten inches from my mouth
4:11
That's a really good positioning. And I'm going to go ahead and push the button
4:15
And now what you're hearing is my voice being picked up by this microphone
4:22
So first off, we'll mute. And now you can hear me. So that's super easy
4:30
And I can see everything coming towards me you know so the lights are facing me and everything so I know I have it optimally set up Now while we still recording I going to go ahead and give it some ambient noise
4:45
So now it sounds like I'm in the jungle, but my question is, all right, well, if we try that active noise cancellation, what happens
4:54
So I'm going to put this over here. Hopefully that'll still be nice and loud
4:58
and then I'm going to push the ANC button and it lights up
5:03
and now you're hearing my voice from the microphone with the ANC
5:09
trying to cancel out the bird sounds and ambient noises. So you're getting the full effect
5:15
you're getting everything that's happening and it's pretty cool actually. So let me actually switch things around and..
5:22
All right, let me turn off the background noise. There we go
5:27
Now I'm no longer the jungle, so much calmer. And you can see here that that little light turned orange when I turned
5:34
on the ANC, so off and on, super easy to work with. This whole setup is really easy to work with
5:41
It has great specs. I really like the design. It's a very striking visual design, which
5:48
makes it really fun. The ability to use headphones, to monitor what I'm listening to is obviously
5:54
a great convenience. A lot of podcasters do that because you want to
5:58
to make sure everything's working correctly and that's how you do that. I will say that it is
6:05
if you're going to move it around, there's a little slot on the bottom for you to be able to put
6:11
your cord through and they also have a little thing you can put in there to help the cord stay in
6:16
the right place. But to be fair, probably what most people will do is have the cord going above
6:23
But that's really the only comment I have. Otherwise, I think this is a
6:28
really cool microphone. I really like the design. I honestly don't understand the colors
6:35
but I think that's the kind of thing where I'm going to set it once and then I'm going to be
6:38
done forever. And the ANC on off and the muting on off, super easy to work with. It's attractive. It's
6:47
inexpensive It has good specs And I hope you thought as I did that it sounded really good So lots to like here The only thing we need to talk about is the price But before we get there let me just give you some dimensions just because that pretty useful right
7:01
So notice obviously that it does adjust so you can get it to be the right angle
7:06
It is 9.4 inches tall and then the base is about 5.1 inches across
7:12
And the whole thing's 23 ounces. You're probably not going to be carrying this around with you with, you know, all of your game
7:18
gaming gear, but for your desktop or something, it's light and easy to work with and obviously easy to adjust
7:26
depending on like what angle you want it to be at. I guess I need some wire so there I can adjust it now
7:32
And I really like the cable. I think it's really fun to have it be braided and long. Too many of these cables are too short
7:40
And to have that option of USBA or USBC. So it's very flexible. So 99% of people will find this is
7:48
all the cable they need, which is great. Which means we need to talk about the price
7:53
But before we get to the price, I'm gonna ask if you, you could subscribe to my channel
7:58
Click or tap on that subscribe button. It's not even bouncing around. It's literally sitting in one spot
8:04
Super easy to tap. Tap on it, subscribe, and then turn on notifications
8:09
so you know what all my new postings and all my new videos go up
8:12
So, super easy. Great, this is the toner, ORCA, 070,000, 001 USB desktop microphone, and it is $6999, currently minus $10,5999 at Amazon.com
8:29
If you've been a little disappointed with your audio quality, whether it's for Zoom calls
8:34
or whether it's for live streaming, or Twitch, or whether it's just simply because you want to have your
8:40
podcast sound just a little better, then this is a really interesting one to check out
8:45
That's all I got. I'll hope to catch you. my next video
