Too much humidity? Here's the solution. Let's have a look
0:11
Dave Taylor here with this. This rather sizable unit is the Honeywell Smart Dehumidifier
0:19
Model TP50-AWKN. Now that 50 is important. That 50 refers to the 50 pints of moisture
0:28
it can pull out of your environment every 24 hours. This thing can work up to 3,000 square foot space
0:36
As always you want these to be in closed rooms. If you use this and you have an open window
0:41
then you are basically fighting nature and it's going to be really hard to lower your humidity
0:45
But this is what's known as a compressor dehumidifier. It's a pretty neat idea
0:49
So when you have a cold glass of whatever, we could call it beer, we'll call it something else
0:54
a cold glass of iced tea and all that condensation is on the outside. That's exactly how this works
1:00
So this creates a cold surface and it runs air through that surface and then it gets the moisture
1:08
off of that and collects it in a little bin. So let's open it up and let's have a look
1:14
So basically this is a bin and you can put, you know, you basically put it in. The dehumidifier
1:23
fills it up with water. You take it out, you dump it and listen, I already have some liquid in there
1:29
and I don't live in a very humid environment. That's how efficient this thing is. So when you're
1:34
ready to go you plug it back in and here's the cool thing. It's a smart device, right? So I, from my phone
1:42
can turn it on and then once it turns on you can see here that's going to be my relative
1:48
humidity level. So currently it's saying that my humidity is 58 percent. That's a little high
1:54
I have a feeling it's actually a little lower than that. But from the app, I'll show you, here's what
1:59
I'm seeing. Whoops, let me get that screen back. So tell you what I'm going to do is I'm going to record this
2:06
So from the screen you can see here that I have it, it's set to 50 percent and the current humidity
2:14
is dropping down pretty significantly. It's not super humid where I am but if it was in my basement
2:21
for example, or in my house by the lake, it's a lot more humid and that's a problem, right? So now we
2:27
have current humidity 48 percent. I can adjust my humidity. I can say I'd really like it to be 35 percent
2:34
right? How you want it to be set is a fine balance because if you have it too dry then it's unpleasant
2:41
for people. But if you have it too humid, obviously you have issues with things like mold and that's not
2:47
good. So you definitely want this to be at least 18 inches from walls and if I can turn it around
2:53
then there's an air intake here and then the air comes out here. And it's interesting because the
2:59
air that comes out is actually warmer. So by running it through that refrigerant coil
3:06
you actually actually kind of heat up the air. So let's pop this off. I'll show you. So first off
3:14
this is an air filter that you can wash and clean anytime you want. It's not going to stop bacteria
3:20
or anything but it'll get bits of hair and everything. And then this is literally a refrigerant
3:26
coil just as you would have in your refrigerator. So that's how this all works. And you're thinking
3:32
so do I have Freon? The answer is no. It's powered by R410A, which is an eco-friendly refrigerant
3:39
So let's put this back. It's all really easy to work with. And while we're looking at the back
3:45
this works with this. So if you don't want to have to actually open the bin and empty it out
3:53
you can actually drain it directly to a convenient drain spot. So if you have a basement with a
3:59
concrete floor and a drain in the middle of the floor, as many people do, you can put this near
4:05
it, plug this into here, and then just run the tube so that it drains directly into that. That's
4:12
super easy. And then it really is kind of zero maintenance, right? Because if you're filling up
4:17
this container in the front, then you are sporadically going to have to empty it. There's
4:22
just no way around that. And you can see my relative humidity is dropping and it will continue
4:27
to drop. This thing is ridiculously efficient. It's really pretty amazing. So let me tell you
4:33
that they recommend you start by setting it to 30% on high for a couple of days. And one thing
4:39
that's really nice is that these can end up having frost in them because you have all this moisture
4:44
in the unit and then it gets cold. So this can automatically defrost itself. So those of you that
4:50
have a dehumidifier running, you know, 12 months of the year, you know how important that is
4:56
This is really self-contained. And if we go back to the app, let's just go back. I can change speed
5:02
So we'll set it to low. Maybe it was already on low, so we'll set it to high
5:08
So that's high. It's a little bit louder, so I'll turn it back to low. But what's really cool is
5:14
these timers. If I add a timer, as you can see, I can pick days of the week and I can actually have
5:20
it set up so it maybe only runs from two in the afternoon to six in the afternoon, right? Maybe
5:25
that's when there's the most humidity hitting or that's when we, you know, the family most notices
5:31
the humidity and complains about it. So you can just set that up as a set of timers, either repeating
5:36
or just one-time timers. Or you can obviously just go directly into the app and turn things on or off
5:42
Or I can just say, you know what? Off. Just want to turn it off. A little quieter. But this will also
5:50
give you notifications for things like power fail. Or more importantly, it will say that this
5:56
collection tube or tub is actually filling up and it's time to empty it so that the system can get
6:02
back to work. On the back with that air filter, it can also notify you that it's time to clean the
6:07
air filter because it's detecting how much work it has to do to pull air through. And if that starts
6:13
to be something there, it's having to turn the fan higher, then obviously it needs to be cleaned
6:18
Now, on the top, a little hard to see, there's a handle, but here's a close-up. There's a whole
6:23
touch panel system on the top with display. So here it shows you relative humidity. It duplicates
6:29
that on a tiny little window up there. And of course, that's all duplicated on here too, which is
6:35
really cool. I mean, this whole idea of it being a smart device is really nice. And it also, you
6:42
have the ability to connect it with things like Alexa. So you could actually check through
6:49
Alexa what your humidity level is. And I assume it can actually send notifications through Alexa
6:55
telling you that it's time to empty that water reservoir. So let's see what else. It's the 24-hour
7:01
timer or continuous mode. You have high or low fan speeds. The light brightness can be adjusted
7:08
There's a sleep mode. If you have this in someone's bedroom or in maybe the kid's bunk room
7:14
or something, you can have it where it's nighttime. We don't want this really bright on the front or
7:19
on the top. And so all the lights can dim down a little bit. Amazing number of companies don't pay
7:24
attention to that. And it's really annoying. I have devices in my bedroom with little bits of tape
7:30
over their super bright LEDs, which they don't seem bright during the day, but when it's dark
7:35
and there's no other illumination, that little red or blue dot is like a beacon. It's like having
7:40
a tiny lighthouse. Not good. Honeywell paid attention to that, which is great. There's the
7:46
continuous drain outlet. If you want to actually have the power cord wind on the back, there are
7:53
these little tabs you can put in, and then you have something to wind the cord on. And it's a
7:58
pretty heavy duty cord. It's pulling some amperage. It's pulling some wattage. It is an Energy Star
8:04
appliance. So if you have an old dehumidifier, this is going to use a lot less energy than that
8:10
and better capacity and probably faster. And obviously having it be controllable from your
8:15
phone is super cool. So you should definitely be checking that out too. So let's see. It's 20.1
8:22
inches tall, 13.2 inches wide, 10.5 inches deep, and it's substantial. It's 32 pounds empty. You
8:31
add all the water in the reservoir and stuff, and you're going to add a couple more pounds. So this
8:35
is not something grandma's going to be toting down the stairs probably, but it's not unreasonable for
8:41
its size and its capacity. And being able to manage a 3,000 square foot space, that's basically most
8:47
people's houses, right? In fact, probably your house is smaller than that. My house isn't that
8:51
big, right? So this could dehumidify my entire house and pull 50 liters of water out of the air
8:59
every 24 hours. So that's actually pretty impressive. I could significantly lower my
9:04
humidity compared to the humidity outside. And that's really the goal, because if you're like
9:09
in the Midwest in the summer and it's 90 degrees out and 95% humidity, you know how beastly that
9:16
can be. Here's your solution. Nice. Now, also comes with a five-year limited warranty, which is great
9:22
So what are the problems, right? So I've been super enthusiastic about it. What are the problems
9:28
What are the things I don't like about it? The answers are kind of nothing. I mean, they've
9:32
really nailed this. Honeywell's really been working on dehumidifier for such a long time
9:37
They know what's good. They know what should be in this product. If anything, maybe the problem
9:42
is that it's expensive. So this is not something you're picking up at Walmart for 75 bucks. This
9:48
is a little bit more expensive and you really probably want to spend some time using the app
9:54
reading the manual, learning how to use this properly and how to set it up so that it works
9:59
well for your environment. So it is more expensive. It is a little more complicated
10:05
There's a lot of controls on the top to figure out what all these buttons do, right? But for me
10:10
you know, I like complexity. I like technology. I like well-designed solutions. So I don't see
10:16
that as a huge problem, but positives, negatives, you know, this is not something where you plug
10:21
push, go. A little more involved than that. So with that, the only thing left to talk about is
10:26
the price. So you can understand why I say it's expensive. But before we get there, I'm going to
10:31
ask if you can subscribe to my channel. Really appreciate when you do that. It's just that little
10:36
floating red button on the corner. Tap it or click it and boom, we're subscribed. Always honest
10:41
always straightforward. I'm going to give you the straight scoop. For example, with this
10:48
the Honeywell smart dehumidifier model TP50AWKN. I'm not sure why I can't remember that so easily
11:02
Anyway, it is $289.99 at Amazon.com. So it is not the least expensive option on the market
11:10
but this is a well-known company with a great warranty and an amazing track record. And
11:16
Honeywell has been involved in home and business and commercial air management systems for a mighty
11:22
long time. I really feel like this is something I can set, configure, and forget about it and just
11:29
let it run in my basement, at the house, at the lake, whatever it is. And then if anything happens
11:34
then I'll get a notification on my app and I'll know I have to deal with it. That's pretty nice
11:39
Much better than going back a month later and finding out, oh, it turned off 15 minutes after
11:44
you plugged it in and you never knew. So that won't happen with this. So having that smart
11:49
additional feature, super cool. So I say, if you live in a humid environment or you just want to
11:55
lower humidity in some space in your house or business or commercial enterprise, this is
12:00
definitely one to check out. So with that, I am going to turn it back on. And that means
12:06
that I'm going to lower my humidity and catch you in my next video
