The latest phone from Google? Let's check this out
0:10
Dave Taylor here and I'm checking out this. This is the Google Pixel 5
0:15
Now, the 5 is just part of its incremental numbering system, but it also represents the fact that this works with 5G
0:22
So this is one of the very first phones on the market to support the new, much, much faster 5G connectivity system
0:30
And even better, as is so common with tech, there's not a version of 5G
0:35
There are multiple versions of 5G. So this actually supports 5G sub-6 and 5G millimeter wave
0:44
So, theoretically, wherever you go in the world and whatever carrier you want to use
0:49
this will work with that on the 5G, on their 5G network
0:54
Now, I don't have 5G where I live, so I wasn't able to test that particular capability
0:59
but that's all coming and being rolled out anyway. So we're going to see a lot more 5G in 6 to 12 months
1:05
So you're sort of ahead of the curve a little bit with this, but let's talk about the specs
1:10
And then I got a ton of photos and videos to share and I'll talk about some of the pros and frankly some of the cons
1:16
some of the things that you might want to think about before you make the purchase decision with this Pixel 5
1:22
First, though, I want to also point to my Google Pixel 5 unboxing
1:28
People have had a lot of fun watching that because when I open the Pixel buds
1:32
yes, they actually fall on the floor and people got really anxious about it
1:37
But the good news is that I have carpet, so they are completely intact
1:41
No damage was done to this particular product. Nothing to worry about
1:46
So, all right, the Google Pixel 5. You can see the front, you can see the back
1:51
Yes, that's a fingerprint sensor in the middle. It's powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 765G Octa-Core Adreno 620
2:01
Now, that's worth mentioning because the latest and greatest version of the Qualcomm Snapdragon
2:06
is actually the 865G. So this is not the fastest possible processor
2:12
Now, my assumption is Google did that to keep the price tag down
2:16
And this is a nice price tag, especially if you've been looking at like the iPhone 12 Pro
2:20
or something like that, where it's almost double the price. So they are pretty spendy
2:25
especially if you want to get the Pro Max at the full amount of like storage capacity
2:30
It's a lot of darn money for a smartphone. So, Android 11, of course
2:34
everyone who has a Google Pixel knows that these get the new versions of Android first
2:39
You can even get onto betas, which is great fun if you're someone who loves tech
2:44
or really needs to work on the Android platform. You really have to have a Pixel phone
2:49
somewhere in your, you know, lineup, so you can use it for testing and anticipate what's coming
2:55
as other Android vendors slowly roll out the latest version. So, the screen itself, you can hopefully see here
3:03
I can bring it over to here. This is an FHD OLED 6-inch screen
3:09
and they've got it super close to the edges. It's not a wraparound screen
3:13
but it's so close that it almost looks like it's just solid screen
3:18
It is only, however, at 1080 by 2340 pixels. So, that's a fairly low resolution
3:25
If you're looking at something, again, like the iPhone 12 Pro or the Google
3:30
I'm sorry, the Samsung Galaxy Note 20, they have much higher resolution
3:35
which is therefore much higher density screens. But let's be honest, you know
3:40
1080 by 2340 on a screen this size, it's still pretty gorgeous
3:46
It looks really nice. It's 24-bit depth. It's HDR, you know. This is a really lovely screen
3:53
and if you want to stream video or something on it, it's going to look really nice
3:57
Now, let's talk about battery because one of the things Google hasn't done well
4:01
is they haven't really managed battery and power on their Google Pixel line
4:05
So, this one finally does a good job. So, this is a 4080 milliamp-hour battery
4:11
You can actually charge it with an 18-watt USB-C charger, which is a power delivery 2.0
4:18
So, if you want to buy a third-party charger, just look to make sure it at least has PD2.0
4:23
if not PD3.0. It is wireless Qi charging. As you can see, when I put it on the Google Pixel stand
4:30
it's a great stand, and the phone knows it's the stand and behaves differently when it goes on this
4:36
than any other wireless charger, which is pretty interesting. I don't know why it keeps wanting me to set it up
4:41
but let's see what happens this time. Okay, so now it's just charging. So, that's great
4:46
It also has reverse wireless charging, which means you can actually use its back plate
4:51
as a Qi charger to charge something else, for example, your earbuds
4:56
that actually might support wireless charging. So, kind of interesting idea. You can charge this all the way
5:02
then put it upside down, and then see if I can take these out without them falling
5:06
and then take your beautiful Pixel Buds, put them on the back, and you have to enable it
5:11
but it would then be charging your buds. Cool, right? So, I shall place this back in
5:17
We shall make sure this stays intact, and we're good there. So, nice job with the battery life
5:22
It should definitely give you probably a day and a half, but if you're used to charging it when you get home at night
5:29
it's going to work just fine, and you won't need to deal with power at all during the day
5:33
Now, one of the other limitations is, now let's talk about storage
5:37
So, it's 128 gig of storage with 8 gig of RAM. There is no microSD
5:42
and there is no way to buy a larger storage capacity. Now, my assumption is this is just because that's in line with Google's
5:49
put everything on the cloud, back up everything to the cloud, move everything to the cloud, right
5:54
If indeed you are always online, and you're on fast 5G, then you don't really need 128 gig worth of stuff sitting on your phone
6:03
But, if you're somewhat more old school, and you want to have things like movies
6:07
and a big music library, and all those downloads for your favorite game on your phone itself
6:13
just in case you're not online, then that 128 gig might be an issue
6:18
It's a little curious that they don't have like a 256 gig option
6:22
but this is just a one size better fit all. So, there's that
6:26
Now, good news, it's IP68 water resistant. So, if you splash your coffee on it
6:31
or you drop it in the sink while you're washing your hands for 20 seconds
6:35
no problem, rinse it off, you're good to go. It's not going to be damaged. I am so happy to have phones finally be able to handle actually our lives
6:43
What a great improvement, and really, I can't believe how many years we all suffered through having phones that if you got
6:51
you know, even if it was humid, they would shut down, and then the company would say
6:55
oh, we don't support them, we have little sensors, and the sensor has said that it has been in the presence of moisture
7:00
It's like, yeah, welcome to life. So, good job with that too
7:04
Now, let's talk about cameras, and then I'll get into some examples. So, rear-facing, there are two cameras
7:10
There's a 12.2 megapixel dual pixel camera with a 77 degree view
7:16
and there's a 16 megapixel ultra-wide with a 107 degree view. And then for video, you can shoot at 1080p at 30 up to 240 frames per second
7:28
and you can shoot 4K on this little phone. You can shoot 4K at 30 frames per second, or 60 frames per second
7:36
On the front, there's a little hole punch in the corner. You can barely see it
7:39
Maybe if I go here, maybe you see just a little bit. There's a little hole right there
7:44
and that front-facing camera is an 8 megapixel F2.0 with an 83 degree view
7:50
So, pretty nice. So, all of that is glorious, but let's get some examples, right
7:56
So, let's switch. First off, this is going to be a demonstration of zoom
8:00
So, we're going to start out with the ultra-wide, and this is the biggest angle of view you can get
8:06
And then I'm going to step to what I consider like normal, which is just the 1x zoom
8:12
And then finally, we'll get into the closest, where I've zoomed in as much as I can
8:18
And all three of these photos are very impressive. This was obviously a very smoky day over the Rocky Mountains
8:25
Now, let's look at night mode. So, night mode is something that Google's really been working on with the Pixel
8:30
This is actually the big holy grail for all of these smartphone companies
8:34
But here's night mode. This is just middle of the night on my street
8:37
and you can see it's done a really nice job and pulled in a lot of light
8:41
And yes, this was handheld. I didn't have it on a tripod
8:45
So, now let's look at some video. First off, this is just a little video shot
8:50
handheld of some flowers in front of my house. You'll see that bee right there
8:55
And then, while I'm filming, I can change zoom. And it did a nice job with it
9:02
So, then I went to my daughter's volleyball practice and took some footage there
9:06
So, first off, let's do a slow motion of their volleyball. And this is just really fun and remarkably well done
9:14
And again, handheld. Now, let's do a time-lapse
9:36
because it's actually quite comical to see that when they're trying to play a game of volleyball
9:40
All in all, I'm really impressed with the camera. That's really one of the strengths of this Pixel 5
9:45
They've done a really nice job making it so that it might not be super expensive
9:51
but boy, you can get really good photos and really good video content from it
9:55
So, lots to like here. And let me tell you, just some of the things that I really like is that
10:01
it's actually cheaper than the previous generation of phones, which is great
10:06
It has a better battery. They've added that reverse wireless charging, which I'm guessing most people will never use
10:13
But in a pinch or in an emergency, you could even put another phone on top of it and give your buddy a little bit of a charge
10:20
if they also support wireless charging. So, that's actually super slick. And of course, its cornerstone feature is that 5G support
10:29
And as that rolls out and as that becomes more widely available
10:34
it's going to be glorious to have faster and faster and faster connectivity
10:38
So, lots to like. There are some limitations with the processor. I mean, I find it to be really snappy
10:45
I don't have any issues with performance, even when I'm running on apps or games or anything
10:51
But your mileage may vary. You might need or want the absolute fastest possible phone
10:57
This is not that. This is not the state-of-the-art latest possible chipset
11:02
So, there's that. Oh, and just in case you actually use this as a phone, it sounds really good
11:10
And if you use it like this and make a phone call, the person on the other end will be very happy with how well you sound, how good you sound, right
11:18
So, for those odd moments where you use a smartphone as a phone
11:22
this definitely has that capability too. Of course, most people are probably going to use Bluetooth
11:27
And in fact, that reminds me, this does not have a 3.5 millimeter audio jack on it
11:33
So, you will need to use Bluetooth. It has USB-C charging on bottom
11:40
And then on the back, there is a fingerprint sensor. It is smack dab in the middle
11:44
It is not embedded on the screen. This is not state-of-the-art technology
11:48
This is just a basic functional fingerprint sensor that will unlock your phone
11:53
which means, yes, that they've actually backed away from that 3D face model they were using with the Pixel 4
12:00
So, honestly, it is pretty cool to just look at your phone and have it unlock
12:05
but possibly that fingerprint sensor might be a little bit more secure and a little bit more stable
12:10
So, that's everything I got for you on the Google Pixel 5
12:14
So, let's talk about the price and the colors. But before we do that, can I ask that you can subscribe to my channel
12:20
Just a tap or a click on that red subscribe button and boom, you are subscribed
12:25
And I appreciate that a lot. Great. Now, this is the Google Pixel 5
12:30
This is in Sorta Sage. Not a very big fan of this color
12:35
It's sort of just a really, I don't know, sort of a blah green
12:40
Not, like I said, wish they would have chosen some other colors. You can also get it in just black, which might be the way to go
12:47
But, you know, I don't know. I guess it's up to you to pick what color you prefer
12:51
And it is, the phone is $699. Or, if you go through store.google.com, you can get it for $29.12 per month for 24 months
13:04
So, obviously, you can also buy this through your favorite carrier. But this will work
13:09
This is supposedly compatible with all the major carriers around the world
13:14
So, theoretically, you can just buy it straight from Google and then plug it into wherever you want
13:19
Just put in the right SIM card. So, that's everything I got
13:23
Mostly being, you know, really impressed with this. I think they've got a lot right
13:27
And I think that at the price point, this is a solid mid-range phone
13:31
Definitely worth checking out. And if you're a huge Android fan or you're a developer for the Android platform
13:37
this is probably a no-brainer for you just to get one of these to make sure you have it for testing
13:42
So, with that, I'll catch you in my next video. Thanks for watching
