The Good and The Beautiful Level 2 Curriculum Unboxing & Overview | Homeschool Curriculum Choices

0:00
Hey friends, welcome. Today we're going
0:01
to be getting into some homeschool
0:03
things. I'm going to be sharing what we
0:05
are using for our curriculum this year
0:07
and doing an initial unboxing review and
0:10
overview of the good and the beautiful
0:12
level two curriculum. We're going to be
0:15
going into what that looks like for both
0:17
language arts and math and then sharing
0:20
with you guys what we have planned for
0:22
the upcoming school year. That way if
0:24
you two are considering the good and the
0:26
beautiful or maybe you have already
0:29
chosen this curriculum, you can get a
0:31
look at what that looks like. And I also
0:33
have reviews and unboxings of all of the
0:35
previous levels of the Good and the
0:37
Beautiful. So preschool, pre
0:39
kindergarten, kindergarten, first grade,
0:42
a couple of different reviews. I always
0:43
like to do an initial unboxing and an
0:46
initial overview. And then as we get
0:48
further into the curriculum, we do this
0:50
again and then I share uh more thorough
0:52
reviews. So, go ahead and see what it's
0:55
looking like for us this year. We love
0:57
the Get in the Beautiful. I always
0:58
purchase the physical copy except for
1:01
one year. And after going through the
1:04
work of trying to get everything printed
1:06
and binded and all of that, I just
1:08
decided that I would rather have had the
1:11
physical copy, especially in the sense
1:12
that I like that it comes with the
1:14
manipulatives for the math box as well
1:17
as some of their story readers. So,
1:20
we'll get into all of that, but let's
1:22
start here with a level two language
1:25
arts course book. It covers phonics,
1:27
writing, reading, grammar, and
1:29
punctuation, spelling, literature,
1:31
geography, and art. This one is purple.
1:35
It's still the spiral bound. The math is
1:38
not. So, we're going to see which one we
1:40
prefer. With the spiral, I feel like it
1:43
sometimes comes apart. But then I'm
1:45
noticing with the binded one that it's
1:49
preferated. So, I'm hoping that the
1:51
pages for that one don't fall out. And
1:53
then we also have the handwriting. So,
1:56
as always in the beginning, it tells you
1:58
what you're going to be needing
1:59
throughout the course so that anything
2:01
that you need to get before you dive in
2:03
and get started, you can do that ahead
2:05
of time. So, for this one here, it's
2:09
nothing out of the ordinary. Things to
2:12
always have on hand with just like glue,
2:14
tape, crayons, colored pencils, papers,
2:17
pencils, scissors. Um, they also say
2:21
whiteboard or dry erase markers. So,
2:23
that might not be something that
2:24
everyone has on hand. So, they do say
2:27
that that's something that you may want
2:29
to have on hand. And then just personal
2:31
reading books at your child's reading
2:33
level. even though they recommend that
2:35
when you're doing readalouds, you read
2:37
books that are a level above your
2:39
child's reading level. So, for unit one,
2:42
it does have a couple of extra things
2:43
that you might need such as like a
2:45
recording device or a timing device,
2:48
word processing program, two quarters,
2:50
cotton ball, index card, sticker, spoon,
2:53
tracing paper, watercolor paper, and
2:55
paints, paint brushes, and tissue. So,
2:59
few odd walls there. For unit two, it
3:02
has pretty much the same thing with the
3:04
addition of a spoon, a butter knife, and
3:06
a fork. Have that at home. And then for
3:10
unit three, it also adds two small
3:13
rewards. A poster board or access to
3:15
Google Slides, access to Google Maps, a
3:19
small plastic sheet, and white paint.
3:22
So, that's pretty much everything you
3:24
need for this entire curriculum. And
3:26
then anything extra that you decide that
3:28
you may want to add in as well, which we
3:31
typically add on some like hands-on
3:33
manipulative like fake money for math.
3:36
For this one, we have um like a solar
3:39
system kit. We're going to be using
3:42
wooden like letters and things to spell
3:44
out words to help us with spelling.
3:46
Curriculum also does come with how-to
3:49
videos. It comes with instructional
3:51
videos for the student. It comes with a
3:54
homeschool app and a letter house app
3:56
for spelling, reading booster games,
3:58
video books, all of this that go along
4:01
with the curriculum. So, that's really
4:03
neat. So, if you have a tablet, it will
4:05
be helpful with this curriculum. These
4:08
are the suggested coordinated readings
4:11
or readers, which is the nature readers.
4:14
So, it says my first nature reader, my
4:17
second one, and my third. We have the
4:19
first one with first grade kindergarten.
4:22
And then we had the second one with
4:26
first grade, I believe. And so we're
4:28
doing the third nature reader now for
4:30
second grade. They're super super cute.
4:33
And then they also have the Africa
4:36
readers as well. Here's the integrated
4:38
letter tiles app. Um, and then it tells
4:41
you everything about the course
4:43
preparation. It even has like a sample
4:45
schedule. In a public school year, it's
4:48
about 36 weeks, not including holidays
4:50
and breaks. But if you do this with
4:53
holidays and breaks included four to 5
4:55
days a week, you complete this in 30
4:57
weeks. We typically do 5 days a week,
4:59
and we typically finish ours up in about
5:01
five to six months every time. So easy.
5:05
Um, but yeah, it goes more into not just
5:08
the course, but the good and the
5:09
beautiful as a whole. Here does have an
5:13
answer key. It is broken up into units.
5:16
So there are three units with 40 lessons
5:18
in each unit for a total of 120 lessons.
5:22
It has a lot of poetry here is what I'm
5:25
noticing for sure with this one. Lots of
5:28
poetry letter sounds, sentence practice.
5:32
Definitely has a little bit just a
5:34
little bit of Christian um aspect in it.
5:38
Not a lot. You would definitely want to
5:39
supplement with your own devotion if you
5:42
would like to. We always do for Bible
5:45
study practice and things like that.
5:47
More syllable practice, some review of
5:50
what was already learned. More spelling
5:52
practice, adjectives, root words,
5:55
synonyms, antonyms, geography, things
5:58
that a sentence must have, phonograms,
6:02
homophones, hetronyms, plural nouns,
6:07
messages in books, oral narration.
6:11
Um, more poetry, verbs, subject, short
6:15
stories, decoding, natural disasters,
6:18
American folklore, and
6:23
spelling rules, irregular plural noun,
6:25
as well as possessive nouns. There's a
6:28
lot a lot a lot in here. So, grammar,
6:31
usage, and punctuation, as I mentioned,
6:33
art, geography, literature, and writing,
6:35
phonics, reading, spelling,
6:38
it's all in here. Um, so yeah, so far
6:42
really beautiful. It also breaks down
6:46
what each of the cards
6:51
covers and includes as well. These are
6:54
the booster cards. I'll show you.
7:00
These are the reading booster C cards.
7:03
till you get A with kindergarten, B with
7:06
first grade, and C with second grade.
7:10
These are the things that help them to
7:12
learn how to read. I love them. You can
7:14
always keep them on hand. So, it has the
7:17
master before you begin section per
7:20
usual, which just has words, vowel,
7:24
shorts, and long sounds, and the long
7:27
sounds of Y like I and E as in baby. So
7:32
they just want to make sure that your
7:34
child can read these site words without
7:37
hesitation. And then also in the
7:41
beginning of the curriculum itself, it
7:44
wants your child to be able to read this
7:47
paragraph or short story in 2 minutes or
7:51
less. Those are some things that you
7:53
could practice before you get started.
7:54
And then it dives right in. It has some
7:56
spelling review from the lower level
7:58
courses as well as six new spelling
8:02
words for unit one and then you'll get
8:04
new spelling words for each one. The
8:06
first one is super easy. It does tell
8:08
you here that in this curriculum is
8:12
definitely a lot of focus on poetry in
8:16
this curriculum and it tells you that in
8:18
the beginning and explains why it's so
8:22
much throughout here. I'm noticing each
8:25
lesson is per usual only about two
8:31
sometimes three pages long and the
8:34
beginning is very very short like one or
8:37
two pages but as you get further into it
8:41
it
8:44
let's see I don't know they're still
8:46
looking pretty short so what I am
8:48
noticing is that the page itself has a
8:50
bit more indepth reading but yeah either
8:54
one to two or two to three pages and
8:57
then there's the reviews. Some very
8:59
beautiful illustrations throughout per
9:02
usual. That's one thing we love about
9:05
the good and the beautiful. It's just an
9:06
initial unboxing and review and it's
9:09
pretty similar to all of the ones in the
9:12
past except for the new things being
9:14
taught. Um, the booster reading cards
9:18
have a lot more poetry in them, but
9:20
other than that, they look pretty much
9:22
the same. And then here is the third
9:28
nature reader. The nature reader has 22
9:33
stories in them. And then these all go
9:36
with the booster cards and the
9:39
curriculum as well. I do notice that the
9:41
stories for this are definitely a bit
9:43
longer than the ones inside of the first
9:47
and second nature readers. And then
9:49
instead of having the individual
9:52
booklets to read along for the booster
9:56
books with the curriculum itself, the
9:59
booster books are gone and now there is
10:01
just two chapter books which is really
10:04
great. We have Wesley and the Wolves by
10:06
Jenny Phillips and Molly and the Falcon
10:09
by Maggie Taylor. So, first you would
10:12
start with Wesley and the Wolves, I
10:16
believe. Yeah. And they again go with
10:19
the curriculum. So for instance, this
10:20
one is practicing the Q sound. Level
10:25
lesson one in the curriculum is also
10:27
practicing the Q sound as well as the
10:30
second booster C card. Also practicing
10:34
the Q sound. So we like to start off
10:36
with our booster cards, do our
10:38
curriculum, and then end it with a
10:39
chapter or a book that coincides with
10:41
it. So, whole um color on the pictures,
10:47
just plain illustrations,
10:50
but
10:52
it's good. It says, "In this timeless
10:55
tale, Wesley is a cheerful, good-hearted
10:58
boy, but he likes to tease when his
11:00
teasing brings serious consequences. The
11:02
villagers no longer trust him. So, how
11:04
can he gain their trust again?" Wesley
11:06
wants to solve this problem, even if it
11:08
takes hard work. He also wants to solve
11:10
mysteries about two items he found, a
11:13
key and a hidden door in a mountain.
11:16
Kids will love following Wesley's story
11:18
while learning new reading skills along
11:20
the way. So, that's what this one is
11:21
about. And then after you finish that
11:23
one, you move on to Molly and the
11:25
Falcon. And then it picks up from
11:28
whatever you left off on here, it picks
11:31
up on in here as far as like the um
11:35
lesson that you're on. So, this one
11:37
picks up with letter sounds UI, and U,
11:41
E. So, this one, when Molly and her dad
11:45
find an injured falcon, they can never
11:46
guess the new experiences that are about
11:48
to unfold. With the help of new friends,
11:51
Molly learns about birds of prey and
11:53
dedicates herself to nurturing the
11:54
falcon back to health. When she and her
11:56
friends find themselves in a dangerous
11:58
situation, their survival skills are put
12:00
to the test. Parents and children alike
12:02
will love reading and learning side by
12:04
side, and it is delightful and
12:05
inspiring. tell. So, Mali and the
12:08
Falcon, that is the two books that go
12:13
along with the curriculum. Now, for
12:16
math, there is also 120 lessons split
12:18
into three units just the same. We
12:21
always like to just kind of do them side
12:23
by side so that we can finish them up
12:25
about the same time. Also breaks it
12:28
down, lets you know everything that
12:30
you're going to be needing, the supplies
12:32
that you're going to be needing as well.
12:34
And here are some of the concepts that's
12:36
going to be taught in the math level
12:38
two. Adding and subtracting two-digit
12:40
numbers. Addition strategies. Calendars.
12:43
Counting and writing money amounts.
12:45
Counting backwards. Counting coins and
12:48
bills. Dividing in half. Doubles
12:50
addition and subtraction. Dozen and
12:52
half. Doesn't estimating equivalent
12:54
coins. Greater than, less than, equal.
12:56
Identify A.M. and P.M. Identifying rate
12:59
numbers to a th00and. Identify noon and
13:01
midnight. Identify odd and even numbers.
13:03
Logic. Measure inches. Number lines.
13:06
Number order. One more or one less.
13:09
Ordinal positions. Patterns. Place value
13:11
to a thousand. Regrouping. Rounding to
13:14
the nearest 10. Skip counting by twos,
13:16
threes, fives, tens, 25s, and 50s.
13:19
Spelling number words up to 15. Story
13:21
problem. Subtraction strategies. Tally
13:24
marks. Telling times up to 5 minutes.
13:27
Time conversions. Time expressions. Zero
13:29
as a placeholder. extra supplies needed
13:32
for unit one is a bowl and some
13:34
scissors. So, we purchased the place
13:37
value uh tin blocks because I think that
13:40
it might be helpful to have with this
13:44
curriculum
13:45
because lesson one dive straight into
13:48
place of value. The lessons are about
13:51
three pages so
13:54
pages but the second page front and back
13:57
kind of. So, three pages basically is
13:59
what I'm noticing for pretty much all
14:02
the way straight through. So, not too
14:06
time consuming. We typically could
14:08
finish up a math lesson within 25 to 30
14:12
minutes. Another thing that we also like
14:14
to keep on hand is our wooden clock
14:18
because it's also helpful. It does
14:20
include like little cardboard clocks,
14:22
but my son, he thoroughly enjoys using
14:26
like a large like wooden clock. So,
14:28
we've gotten that one. We have some play
14:31
money and we have the um 10 blocks. So,
14:36
those are some of the things that we're
14:37
going to be using to go along with our
14:39
math curriculum. But, it also does
14:41
include this here box, which I actually
14:44
have not opened up yet to even see
14:46
what's inside of here. So, let's check
14:48
this out.
14:52
It has a clock with movable arms, two
14:55
fraction dies, one 10-sided dies, four
14:58
aircraft manipulas, a set of coins, a
15:00
set of play money, and 10 star
15:02
manipulatives is what's in here. But
15:05
yeah, everything is just cardboard. So,
15:07
this is the clock, which is very easy to
15:09
pull out if you really just need to pull
15:11
it out. You don't have to lug around a
15:13
large one. We just like to have that
15:15
type of stuff. Like I said, you don't
15:16
need it. And then the money is also
15:20
really like small as you can see.
15:23
Doesn't have any
15:26
faces on there either. Just a dollar
15:31
sign in the middle. Um, these are so
15:35
tiny that we have to keep them away from
15:38
baby girl who is a year old. These are
15:40
like choking hazards. But there's that
15:44
and
15:47
cardboard money.
15:49
Then these are tiles and the fraction
15:53
dice. And even the dyes is really small.
15:57
So everything is here. You can
16:00
definitely use this. The curriculum is
16:03
very affordable, especially compared to
16:04
other curriculum on the market. believe
16:07
it was $180 for all of this for the
16:10
math, the language arts and the
16:13
handwriting came out to $180
16:16
and it comes with um and that's with the
16:19
nature reader and handwriting as
16:21
mentioned. So, like I said, it's pretty
16:25
affordable. I think that the math was
16:27
like $60 and the language was like $80.
16:31
I'm going to list the actual price
16:33
because I could be getting this wrong.
16:34
with the handwriting might have been
16:35
like $15. Then the nature reader might
16:38
be $13.
16:40
But um so yeah, I know that these this
16:43
here doesn't have like the utmost
16:44
quality manipulatives inside of it, but
16:48
for the price point, I'm going to throw
16:51
this away because this is also very
16:53
dangerous for baby girl. That's why I
16:55
left it out because I need to throw it
16:56
away immediately. But the price point
16:59
matches the curriculum, the
17:01
beautifulness of it, the quality. I
17:03
never feel like my child is behind or
17:05
missing out on anything. I feel like he
17:08
gets what he needs and it's not
17:10
neckbreaking and difficult. We don't
17:13
have to fight and argue over it. Fact is
17:17
by grade four it becomes more
17:19
independent. They expect that by level
17:22
four your child is doing pretty much
17:25
independent work and you're kind of just
17:27
overseeing it. So, there is some
17:30
motivation for you if you're a
17:31
homeschool mom and you're like, "Oh,
17:32
this is hard." Or if you haven't started
17:34
homeschooling yet and you're wondering,
17:36
"Can you do this?" I highly recommend
17:38
the Good and the Beautiful curriculum
17:39
because it's very easy to follow,
17:41
especially for firsttime homeschoolers.
17:43
And then you can always transition to
17:46
something else if you want to or once
17:49
you have more time on your hands. I am a
17:51
mom of two. I have a one-year-old baby
17:53
girl and therefore my time is not what
17:58
it used to be. Um, so I love the good
18:00
and the beautiful for that. That it's
18:02
grab and go. You can take it anywhere
18:04
with you. We are traveling to Florida
18:07
next month or actually at the end of
18:09
this month. We are going to be packing
18:12
this curriculum up in the car and taking
18:14
it with us to Florida. So, I love that
18:16
about this curriculum. It's completely
18:17
free to print this this curriculum. You
18:20
can print it for free, the language
18:22
rights and the math and use it that way.
18:26
You don't have to purchase it at all if
18:28
you don't want to. You can literally
18:30
print all of this out for free at home.
18:34
You can use the readers on like a Kindle
18:38
or a tablet that way, whatever, you
18:41
know. So, I love that as well about the
18:42
good and the beautiful. It's very
18:44
affordable as well. But yes, if you I
18:49
literally lost my train of thought. What
18:51
I was going to say is that if you like,
18:55
how can I do this? It's going to be
18:56
hard.
18:58
Pick your heart. It is a little hard to
19:01
begin with, but I've always noticed that
19:03
towards the end of this curriculum, my
19:06
son doesn't need to depend on me as much
19:08
as he does in the beginning because he
19:10
has pretty much almost mastered all of
19:13
the stuff in here almost. So like things
19:16
start to get easier. He gets into his
19:18
flow. It gets easier for all of us. The
19:20
lessons are short as well. You can
19:21
double up if you need to. And then
19:24
again, just that thought of, hey, for
19:27
five years, like the preschool and
19:28
kindergarten and then first through
19:30
third grade. um for 5 years.
19:35
Yes, you have to be homeschooling your
19:39
child, like standing over their shoulder
19:41
for just one to two hours a day or as
19:45
little or as much as you want to. For
19:47
us, it's typically about an hour and a
19:49
half at this point now, but it used to
19:51
only be 30 minutes and down to an hour.
19:54
So, you know, it goes up. Um, but once
19:58
you get past those 5 years, it does get
20:00
a little bit less dependent or it it's
20:04
said to I'm I know I'm not there yet,
20:09
but I'm already starting to notice that
20:11
it's easier today than it was when we
20:13
were doing preschool and kindergarten.
20:15
So, it gets easier is what I'm trying to
20:18
say. Um, we are also doing the science
20:22
for little hands and heart curriculum
20:23
that goes up to grade three. It's a
20:26
beautiful curriculum. I talked a lot
20:28
about that curriculum in all of my past
20:31
um good and the beautiful curriculum
20:32
reviews. So, you can definitely check
20:34
those out if you want to see more of
20:35
that. But here is the handwriting for
20:37
level two. They used to have these small
20:40
like half booklets for like the
20:42
kindergarten and preschool handwriting
20:44
and everything, which was handwriting
20:46
for little, but I love that now they're
20:48
full on curriculums, full on workbooks.
20:52
It does have like the number practice in
20:55
here as well. So, let's talk about
20:57
everything in here. We already actually
21:00
did the first page. So it's 40 point
21:03
font, writing letters and numbers,
21:06
writing short words, tracing words and
21:07
sentences and spelling and numbers
21:10
drawing some poems. Spelling the colors
21:13
and the numbers,
21:16
lots of picture and art practice.
21:20
And then at the end of it, you get a
21:23
congratulation certificate of
21:25
completion.
21:27
This one has about 103 pages. Yeah, 103
21:33
pages. So, yeah, it's pretty honestly
21:36
simple and straightforward this
21:38
curriculum. Not colorful or anything.
21:41
You add your own color, you know, plenty
21:43
of areas to color. But this is what
21:46
we're doing for level two. I will go
21:48
more in depth than this as we go through
21:50
the curriculum, give you guys an update
21:52
of how things are going, how I feel
21:54
about the curriculum once we've dived
21:56
into it. But just for an unboxing, get
21:58
an overview and an idea of what we're
22:01
going to be doing. This is it. We are
22:03
still going to be going through our
22:04
safety curriculum because we didn't
22:05
complete it. So, I talked about the good
22:08
and the beautiful safety, health and
22:09
safety curriculum, which is very
22:11
beautiful. I love that curriculum. Check
22:13
that out as well. I will link that video
22:15
down below for you guys, as well as the
22:18
video where I talk more about the
22:19
science for the little hearts and hands.
22:21
That's everything that we're going to be
22:24
doing to start along with our Daily
22:26
Grace Company devotions. So, let me know
22:29
what you guys are doing with homeschool
22:31
this year. I hope that you guys found
22:33
this video to be helpful and that you
22:35
enjoyed it. If you are a homeschool
22:38
parent, I would love for you to
22:39
subscribe. But also, I'm always sharing
22:42
homemaking content, cleaning, days in
22:44
the life, grocery haul, shopping costs,
22:47
home organization, homemaking,
22:48
motherhood, all of the things. So, I
22:50
would love to have you over here. But I
22:52
hope that you guys enjoyed this video
22:53
that's going to be offered today. And
22:55
I'll see you guys in the next one.
