The Ax Murders of Martin and Susan DeFoor
Jan 29, 2026
On July 26, 1879, in the Bolton neighborhood just outside Atlanta, ferry keepers Martin and Susan DeFoor were found nearly decapitated in their beds. A bloodied axe in the fireplace, an attic hideout with crumbs and watermelon seeds, a back door ajar, and $500 in silver left untouched. Suspects faded, confessions collapsed, the case remains unsolved, and some still whisper about Mrs. Susan at the DeFoor Centre.
