What is garnishment or specifically in the legal sense what is garnishment of an individual's wages

Well garnishment in itself is an order issued by a court of competent jurisdiction against a defendant

but it is specifically directed to the defendant's employer. Now it's used to collect a debt that arises against the debtor, against the employee of the employer

based upon a judgment of that court. So in summary the court is issuing a

judgment against an individual in ordering the employer of that individual to withhold a portion of that individual's wages or in some instances

all of that individual's wages and direct it either to the court or to the

individual plaintiff or judgment holder Now garnishment is very common in specific types of cases in the United States such as child support cases where the court orders an individual who owes the child support

their employer, to withhold a specific portion of their wages, and that be sent generally to the

court, which is then rerouted to the recipient, the caretaker of the child for whom the debt is owed

But garnishment can be used in any form of civil action. That is, an individual who receives a judgment against a debtor can request either an execution order against property of the debtor or execution against the debtor's wages, which is a garnishment order

If the court grants the garnishment order, that order is sent to the debtor's employer

And again, this is the situation for collecting that debt. against the debtor from a third party employer of the debtor
