John um Clark is with us uh again he's
0:03
the editor of the olive press uh he's in
0:07
uh one of the areas that has been
0:09
hardest hit down towards Malaga Valencia
0:11
seems to be struggling significantly
0:14
John we're hearing four in four hours 13
0:17
inches of rain
0:19
fell yeah it's amazing K uh I was just
0:23
listening to you there and and your
0:24
commentators also got a geography degree
0:26
like me and uh so I'm sort of fascinated
0:29
by the meteorology conditions and how it
0:31
happens and and you know as I was
0:33
explaining earlier the Darna conditions
0:35
where they call it a g fre or cold drop
0:37
where you get this kind of cold air from
0:39
the north that drops into that very
0:41
moist warm air that's coming in from the
0:44
south and of course doesn't help the
0:46
Atlantic's been so warm and this
0:49
suddenly it creates this enormous storms
0:51
and we saw last night tornado in certain
0:55
parts of uh of Valencia I saw an
0:57
incredible kind of tornado literally
1:00
ripped someone's Terrace up uh watching
1:03
on the news around the Valencia area
1:05
where everything including the table on
1:06
their Terrace was just thrown in the air
1:08
and uh you know just incredibly strong
1:10
storms which which bring and I think I
1:12
was explaining earlier that some people
1:14
have had half a Year's rainfall in just
1:16
a matter of hours um so you can just
1:19
imagine when it's been so dry for two
1:21
years we've had very serious drought
1:23
conditions um firstly from El Nino and
1:26
then from lanin which was last year the
1:28
second year that that had that meant
1:30
that the ground's so so hard and so dry
1:33
and the reservoirs are empty that when
1:35
the rain hits heavily it just it just it
1:37
just works as runoff and it goes
1:39
straight down into rivers and and you
1:41
know into you Rivers flood quickly and
1:45
towns as you've seen in Inland Valencia
1:47
there's been a number of towns utl and
1:49
Renna um and turis and and quite a
1:51
number of these towns just just can't
1:54
survive you know with that much water
1:55
coming through and and a lot of these
1:57
places have these houses towns have been
2:00
there for hundreds and hundreds of years
2:02
um and you've seen kind of almost
2:03
medieval bridges that being Swept Away
2:06
in storms when you know big tree trumps
2:08
are hitting them and you know I don't
2:10
okay I mean what's happening is it's
2:12
it's just I think it's excavated by
2:14
global warming um it's quite terrifying
2:17
really what what warning was the given
2:21
John well we we knew that we were going
2:24
to get um heavy we knew we knew we were
2:27
going to get very heavy rainfall we knew
2:29
that dar conditions were here and we
2:32
expected a lot of rain but we didn't
2:35
expect quite this much um so you know
2:40
most people I would say yesterday in in
2:42
Amaya Inland Malaga mostly stayed at
2:45
home didn't go out on the roads I I
2:46
ventured out to have a look around and
2:48
there were quite a few places where
2:50
police had cut off roads because there
2:52
had been serious flooding and a couple
2:54
of rivers near us in Ronda had had burst
2:56
their Banks now we had some guests
2:57
coming to stay with us some friends
2:59
friends were coming to stay with us they
3:00
were coming from El churo which is where
3:02
the famous C Del re was and they were
3:05
stuck in the village and all three roads
3:06
out of el churo were blocked and the
3:08
police just said sorry you're going to
3:10
have to stay here so they had to stay
3:11
there for five hours uh in the town
3:14
couldn't move and while they they
3:16
somehow managed to kind of unblock the
3:18
roads and so they could get out and and
3:20
you know this is and this is in L Malaga
3:22
and it's nothing compared to Valencia I
3:24
think I was explaining to you earlier
3:25
how I was watching the news last night
3:27
and there were something like aund cars
3:29
stuck on the motorway on the A3 Motorway
3:32
that goes down from albet into Valencia
3:35
and they were told you're going to have
3:36
to sit and wait here you can't go either
3:38
back or forwards and they were sitting
3:40
there for hours and hours and the pitch
3:41
black it got to some 9:31 at night and
3:43
they they still there um and I I really
3:47
hope that they aren't some of these 51
3:50
people who've lost their lives that the
3:51
Emergency Services didn't manage to get
3:53
them out of their cars and to somewhere
3:55
safe but uh I do fear the worst I fear
3:57
that perhaps the Emergency Services were
3:59
were on the hot Pier they weren't there
4:01
quick enough um you know it's quite
4:04
clear that that now the the emergency
4:06
the fire emergency from the Army at um
4:08
as they're called are now on the ground
4:11
they've got helicopters up so I hope
4:13
that no there's be no more serious uh
4:15
threat to life today but I fear the
4:17
worst yeah we um obviously have a lot of
4:21
people uh watching us from that area
4:23
what advice are people what advice
4:25
should they
4:27
take well obviously going on your roof
4:30
if uh if it's getting bad I think I I I
4:34
can't see it getting above uh two floors
4:37
um so you know stay put and um you know
4:43
just keep very close eye on the IM met
4:45
uh weather station because they issue
4:48
warnings in fact that's now tied in most
4:50
to most people's phones now they can see
4:52
when there's emergency warnings and they
4:54
give These Warnings from iMat iMat as it
4:57
stands for um and they they will tell
5:00
you even localized they'll say well for
5:02
example in bronza there's going to be
5:04
this much rainfall over the next couple
5:06
of hours um I must say we work closely
5:09
with jalter for the the olive press and
5:11
uh they're very good in jalter with
5:13
announcing exactly what time the rain's
5:15
going to start and when it's going to
5:17
stop and how much they predict it's
5:18
going to drop um so you know some places
5:21
are better than others I don't know
5:22
whether Inland Valencia was quite as
5:24
good as Inland and the luia at warning
5:27
us about the rain um as you can hear you
5:30
probably see in the background it's it's
5:31
still raining and uh you know it's not
5:33
heavy at the moment but uh hoping it's
5:36
not going to get too heavy I'm just
5:38
looking at images um on social media as
5:40
I'm chatting to you John where vehicles
5:44
are just strewn across they've been
5:46
moved by the strength of the water
5:48
strewn across this highway with with May
5:51
it's maybe in I would say three or 4T of
5:55
water so I understand your concerns
5:56
about those that may have been trapped
5:58
in their vehicles what's happening with
6:00
the
6:01
airports well both Valencia airport and
6:04
Malaga airport were shot for a few hours
6:05
yesterday at Val the runways at Valencia
6:08
were were completely uh I mean it was
6:10
flooded at Valencia airport so there
6:12
were no planes coming in or out I think
6:13
there were 50 or was it 60 planes that
6:16
couldn't land at Madrid or Valencia um
6:20
we had friends who who were due to get
6:22
in the middle of the night I don't even
6:23
know if they've got here yet what I will
6:25
say about um I don't know if you if
6:27
you've caught some of the footage I was
6:29
watching um uh a video on social media
6:32
this morning of a guy in a truck driving
6:34
up the motorway pass Valencia up north
6:36
towards cion and in front of him a a
6:39
lorri was literally blown over on the
6:41
motorway like blown onto its sides and
6:44
uh you know this is a lorry driver who's
6:46
filming this on his dash cam I think and
6:48
uh he stops and there's a car that
6:50
that's right next to the Lorry that
6:51
somehow misses it and doesn't get
6:53
squashed and I think I heard you say
6:55
earli you talking to someone saying that
6:56
were various lorries had been blown over
6:59
now that's not normal is it I mean when
7:02
have you heard that's ever happened in
7:03
Spain
