if you have spent any time on social
0:05
media you no doubt have come across
0:07
videos asking you to support a charity
0:09
or help somebody in financial need many
0:12
times these videos involve old folks or
0:15
animals and they tug at your
0:17
heartstrings but beware because those
0:20
videos are part of a growing trend that
0:23
are targeting animal lovers and those
0:26
who want to help people people like to
0:28
help other people um or other beings
0:31
animals you know things like that and
0:33
scammers know that hello everybody
0:36
it's good to see you this video is one
0:39
of many variations on a scam that's been
0:41
running wild across Tik Tok hey I can't
0:47
oh scroll i'm struggling to keep my
0:50
small business open the video and its
0:52
varants have caught the eye of the Beta
0:55
Business Bureau scam tracker which
0:57
generated this complaint from a victim
0:59
who said there are Tik Tok videos on an
1:02
account called Flappy Bird US of a
1:05
little old man and his wife who make cat
1:08
toys to support their failing cat
1:10
shelter when you order the toy to
1:12
support them nothing ever gets sent to
1:15
you they just take your money all the
1:17
videos are fake AI generated nonsense
1:20
selling cat toys in this case cow
1:23
slippers in another version there's a
1:25
bunch of different versions of this scam
1:27
cuz there's so many accounts um that
1:29
lead to different websites for you to
1:31
purchase a product if you do get the
1:33
product and when you fill out
1:34
information to buy a product you're
1:36
often putting in your personal and
1:38
financial information so they may be
1:41
using it to fish your information or
1:44
your credit card numbers um or they
1:47
might just be after taking your money
1:50
here are some hallmarks of these videos
1:52
they all use an old person begging you
1:55
not to scroll past they have tons of
1:57
likes and followers but yet they don't
2:00
follow anybody back and here is the most
2:03
amazing thing all these unconnected
2:06
people happen to use the same identical
2:10
video to pitch their products oh my
2:13
goodness what a coincidence one of the
2:16
big red flags for us was that there's so
2:18
many versions of this exact same format
2:21
slightly differing in what they sell
2:23
sometimes um but basically the same
2:26
thing like if you go to Tik Tok and
2:29
search cat slippers you'll see hundreds
2:31
of videos that are basically the same
2:34
when you're looking at something like
2:35
this how can you protect yourself and
2:38
make sure that you're giving to somebody
2:39
who actually needs it and not just some
2:41
scammer I would say doing research can
2:44
be great i don't be in a hurry to
2:48
interact with these videos obviously
2:51
when something tugs on your heart and
2:53
you really want to help someone you want
2:55
you want to help them in that moment
2:56
right So it's it can be difficult to
2:58
kind of take a step back and do more
3:00
research looking into it a little
3:02
further is important and even doing kind
3:03
of a search of it is important because
3:05
you will see hundreds of the exact same
3:08
format video and that's definitely a red
3:10
flag that something is going on to avoid
3:13
social media scams use the internet to
3:16
conduct a search on the company you're
3:17
thinking of buying from use terms like
3:20
complaints review and scam as you
3:23
conduct your search and remember think
3:26
with your head not with your heart
3:29
working for you i'm the consumer guy
