Online shopping, it is booming. This
0:06
year alone, Americans will spend $1.3
0:10
trillion on e-commerce sites with 80% of
0:14
us shopping online.
0:16
You know, people will purchase stuff on
0:17
sale and then maybe decide they don't
0:19
want it.
0:20
In fact, 39% of purchases made online
0:23
are returned, according to a survey by
0:26
Navar. They're a company which helps
0:28
retailers deal with the return process.
0:30
It's estimated the average return costs
0:33
online retailers between 20 and $45. And
0:37
that's one reason why some ecommerce
0:39
sites are now charging for returns.
0:42
Basically, you return the item and then
0:44
they charge you a fee that isn't usually
0:48
like the cost of the item to pay for
0:51
restocking the item. All of which makes
0:53
it more and more important for you to
0:56
know how a site's return policies work.
0:59
Especially if you're purchasing
1:00
something and spending your money, you
1:02
really want to take the time to read a
1:04
return policy. Read fine print. Um to
1:07
make sure that you know what you're
1:09
getting yourself into with purchasing
1:11
that item, especially if you think you
1:13
might need to return it or there might
1:15
be something wrong with that item. Just
1:17
double triple check. Remember, just
1:19
because you found it on Walmart, Amazon,
1:21
or some other nationally known site,
1:23
don't think that their return policy
1:26
applies to everything you see because
1:29
there may be third-party retailers
1:31
piggybacking on that site.
1:33
Sometimes those sellers have different
1:35
policies and also their reviews can vary
1:38
widely based on who the seller is.
1:40
So, what if you have to send something
1:41
back? How do you keep those returns
1:44
hassle-free? Well, the first thing is
1:46
make sure that you keep the original
1:48
packaging that everything was shipped
1:50
in. You'll also need this. It is the
1:53
receipt that came with the items that
1:55
were shipped. In addition, make sure
1:57
that you have a confirmation number and
2:00
keep any emails that might have been
2:02
sent to you regarding your purchase.
2:04
That way, when you talk to customer
2:05
service and they ask for, you know, the
2:07
receipt or the confirmation number, you
2:09
have it readily available. Another way
2:11
to avoid returns, know the quality of
2:14
what you're buying.
2:15
How important is it to read customer
2:18
reviews before you buy?
2:20
We definitely recommend reading customer
2:22
reviews um because that can give you an
2:24
insight into how the business has
2:27
treated customers before you um before
2:29
you have to experience it yourself. So,
2:32
if you're looking into a seller online
2:34
or a business online and they have tons
2:36
of negative reviews, that can be a red
2:40
flag. Um, you definitely should think
2:42
more critically perhaps and do a little
2:44
more research before choosing to
2:46
purchase from that company.
2:47
If you see an ad on Facebook, Instagram,
2:50
or other social media, do not assume
2:52
that seller is trustworthy. Also, when
2:55
you look at a site, make sure it has
2:58
real contact information and never ever
3:01
buy anything via an internet ad. Go and
3:04
find the real site online because
3:06
internet ads can be easily faked and
3:09
they can take you to a bad place.
