The hidden costs in your super low airline ticket
Sep 10, 2025
Airlines may offer you a low base fare but when you add in all the extras you may find your ticket price is suddenly significantly higher. Airlines call it "unbundling." I look at why this is happening and where this trend is going.

Your airline ticket used to be an
0:05
all-inclusive thing covering seat
0:07
booking, suitcases, carry-on luggage,
0:09
meals, and other services. Now, thanks
0:12
to unbundling, all those things once
0:15
offered as part of your standard ticket
0:17
are now extras. Even things like leg
0:20
room, they're tacked on to the base
0:22
price of the ticket if you purchase
0:24
them.
0:25
Basic economics 101. And as much as we
0:27
don't necessarily like it, there's going
0:29
to be somebody who says, "You know what?
0:31
I don't need those extra amenities. I
0:33
don't need to have a snack or uh a
0:36
beverage on the plane if it's going to
0:37
cost me an extra 20, 30, $50." In 1978,
0:42
President Jimmy Carter signed a bill
0:44
deregulating the airline industry, which
0:47
meant airlines, not the Civil
0:49
Aeronautics Board, could set ticket
0:51
prices to be more competitive. Over the
0:53
years, the changing business landscape,
0:56
which includes unpredictable fuel
0:58
prices, overall operational costs, and
1:01
increased competition, have forced
1:03
airlines to look for more ways to
1:05
generate a profit. And that means more
1:07
fees on tickets. Now, Southwest Airline
1:11
joins that move, adding a new fee,
1:13
forcing plus-size passengers to buy two
1:16
seats. It's been a long-standing policy
1:18
for 30 years in favor of the policy that
1:22
is used by most of the other major
1:25
carriers, which is that if you cannot
1:28
fit within the two armrests for your
1:30
seat, then you are required to buy
1:34
another seat. Tired of being nickeled
1:36
and dimed by other airlines.
1:38
Is this your first flight?
1:39
On Southwest Airlines, we don't charge
1:41
fees for stuff that should be free.
1:42
Southwest fees don't fly with us. For
1:45
years, Southwest positioned itself as
1:47
the airline that avoided junk fees and
1:49
made a big deal out of the fact that
1:51
bags flew free. Now, under pressure from
1:54
investors to increase revenue streams,
1:57
they are dumping those policies. When
1:59
you've got free baggage, they're
2:02
essentially pricing that into every
2:04
ticket. So, it'll be interesting to see
2:06
what happens with Southwest ticket
2:08
prices, which on average tend to be
2:10
amongst the lowest in the industry.
2:12
Anyways,
2:13
Southwest is also moving to charge fees
2:16
for extra leg room on flights. That'll
2:18
start in January of 2026. It's part of
2:21
its transition to assigned seating.
2:24
It'll create different fairs to upgrade
2:26
your seats like standard, preferred, or
2:29
extra leg room. You go online, you
2:32
scroll and you scroll, you find this
2:33
really cheap flight that's going where
2:35
you're going and all of a sudden you
2:36
start being being hit with all these
2:38
fees and realize it's not going to be
2:40
such a cheap flight.
2:43
That's right. And unfortunately, pretty
2:45
much every discount carrier has run into
2:48
these issues. Everybody from Ryan Air to
2:50
Spirit to Frontier, they've had these
2:52
issues where a lot of customers or
2:55
passengers get very upset about it. But
2:57
on the flip side, many of them have
2:59
loyal followings in terms of people.
3:01
They're just looking to get from point A
3:03
to point B as cheaply as possible.
3:06
As airlines struggle to remain
3:08
profitable, experts believe we'll see
3:10
more consolidations and more fees. And
3:13
invariably, that means somebody will try
3:15
and step in to fill the void.
3:18
I think the industry is primed for an
3:20
industry leader right now. There
3:22
probably is a better way to do things
3:24
and and I'm hoping and as I think we all
3:26
are that an airline comes in and is
3:29
nuanced in its thinking and finds a way
3:31
to continue to remain profitable while
3:33
continuing to increase comfort and
3:35
amenities for all of its passengers.
3:37
Experts believe in the next 5 years or
3:39
so, the industry will continue to add
3:41
more and more premium ticket fees while
3:44
consumers fight back by combining
3:46
business and leisure into a single trip
3:49
to save money on vacations. Working for
3:52
you, I'm the consumer guy, Steve.
