I bought four popular walkers and put them to the test so here's what you should know about them
0:07
First up is the Drive Medical Walker and this one comes pretty much ready to go. It arrives folded
0:13
flat and you don't need any tools to put it together. The legs are going to slide right into
0:17
the frame and snap into place on their own so there's nothing really here to figure out. And
0:22
when you're done you just press the two large buttons at the top and fold the sides in. They
0:26
They do take a little force but that's actually a good thing because the frame won't fold
0:30
on you by accident. And at around 5.8 pounds, it's also pretty light for a walker
0:35
And you can even just hang it on a hook, toss it in the trunk or carry it upstairs with
0:39
one hand. But lightweight doesn't mean flimsy here. This thing's rated to hold up to 350 pounds
0:45
And even with me standing on it at 180 pounds, the frame stayed solid and steady
0:50
And once folded, it comes down to just 11.5 inches deep so you can store it flat against
0:54
the wall without taking up much floor space. And this can also slip through tighter spaces pretty
1:00
easily. I measured about 20 inches across the outside of the handles so it clears standard
1:04
doorways and narrow hallways with room to spare. Now this walker gives you plenty of height
1:09
adjustments too. You get eight different settings spaced one inch apart and the handles can go as
1:14
high as 38 and a half inches. So whether you're short or tall you can get the handles to a
1:19
comfortable height and keep a more upright posture as you walk. Now if your grip is weak or your
1:24
fingers go numb, then brake levels on a rollader can be a real problem. And here you just rest your
1:30
hands on the cushion grips, put your weight on the frame, and walk. Now the two front wheels roll you
1:35
forward while the rear glide cabs help you slow down when you stop pushing. That slower pace also
1:40
makes it a good fit for recovery especially when you want something stable and easy to control
1:45
after surgery. Now turning is just as easy. You don't need to lift anything. Keep one back leg
1:50
planted and the whole frame pivots around it. And that matters in a tight kitchen or a small
1:55
bathroom where a wide turn just isn an option Now besides that the grips are shaped to fit your hands They help spread out the pressure across your palms so your hands don get sore as quickly
2:08
Next up is the Soundfuse 3-wheel walker, and the single caster wheel up front gives it a
2:12
very tight turning radius. This walker can pivot almost in place, and the triangular frame helps keep the front end narrow
2:20
That makes it easier to work your way around furniture and through tighter spots without
2:23
having to make a wide turn. And I was also impressed by how light it felt
2:28
My scale showed it weighed around 9.9 pounds, yet the aluminum frame still supports up to
2:32
260 pounds. I also put my full weight on the handles to see if the frame would hold up
2:37
And there was a shake in the frame so I'd still be careful just in case. Now on flat 4s and low carpet, the 7.5 wheels rolled pretty smoothly
2:45
The only spot this gave me trouble in was a threshold at home. It's about 3 quarters inch high so I had to lift the front wheel slightly to get over it
2:53
limitation but as long as you go on mostly steady surface this shouldn't be a big deal
2:57
And unlike the drive medical, this one gives you a full brake control. A light pull on the levers
3:02
slow the walker down as you move while a firm push locks the wheels in place. And I like having
3:07
both options because you can control your speed on the go, then keep the walker steady once you've
3:11
stopped. And if the brake tension changes over time, you can adjust it yourself with a built-in
3:16
nut. Then there's the grip itself. The handles have three finger grooves and a flat palm rest
3:21
built into each side and that gives your hands more contact with the grip and takes some pressure off
3:25
your fingers. It's a small detail but you'll notice it more on longer walks. The handle height
3:30
is also adjustable. You get five settings from 34 and a quarter to 38 and three quarters inches
3:36
and that gives you a good range but height is only a starting point. I'm six feet tall and the lowest
3:41
setting felt best for me and the easiest way to find yours is to let your arms hang naturally and
3:45
set the handles around your wrist height. There's also a removable storage bag. It zips closed
3:50
It gives you two smaller pockets for your phone and other little items and the main
3:54
section is deep enough for about a gallon of milk. And when you get home you can just grab both handles and lift the bag off the walker For storage the compact frame is another big plus It could fit into spaces that would be too tight for most full size walkers and you don need to worry about it popping back open since the frame stays locked in place
4:11
until you press the release again. And putting it together doesn't take much time either
4:15
Soundfuse labels all the parts so it's easy to see where everything goes
4:19
From opening the box to finish the assembly, the whole process didn't take too long
4:23
Even brake cables come pre-attached with velcro straps so there's no need to thread or route
4:28
them yourself. And if you want something that's easy to turn and control, then this is a solid pick
4:35
Up next is the Humland Rollator Walker. It rolls on four wheels, but there's more to it than just helping you walk
4:41
You can push it along for support, then turn around and use the built-in seat when you get tired
4:45
The seat measures about 15.5 by 11.5 inches, with about 18 inches between the armrests
4:51
and had plenty of room to sit comfortably, and there was still about an inch and a half of space on either side
4:56
Now underneath the seat, you'll find a little extra storage. And this is going to be roomy enough for some groceries, a purse, or even an extra pair of shoes
5:04
The basket is removable, but you'll need to unscrew the seat first. Now for the brakes
5:09
They take about 9 to 12 pounds of force depending on where you squeeze, but you don't need to pull them all the way
5:15
About three quarters of the way was enough for a controlled stop. You can also push the levers down to lock the wheels in place
5:20
Just be a little more careful on wet floors. On damp wood, the walker felt a little slippery when the brakes were applied
5:26
And at about 7.5 inches across and over an inch thick, those wheels are fairly large
5:31
which helps when the ground gets a little rough. I took it outside on the blacktop and the walker stayed pretty steady
5:36
even when one wheel came off the ground. When I got to my doorway, I still had to tilt it back a little
5:42
but the back wheels cleared the edge easily. All those larger parts do add some weight though
5:46
and at nearly 20 pounds, this is the heaviest walker here. Even so, folding it is still pretty simple
5:51
The strap under the seat lets you collapse the whole frame in one motion. The one tricky part is carrying it
5:57
There's no obvious handle to grab, so I found it easiest to hold it from the bottom when
6:01
I took it up the stairs And if assembly worries you it shouldn because all the parts are labeled and a screwdriver comes in the box and there even some spare hardware That said the knobs take a fair bit of force to tighten so you may want a little help if you don have much hand strength
6:17
Finally, we have the Vochik Z21. And let's start with the brakes
6:21
You can let it roll freely, slow it down as you walk, or lock the wheels before you sit, all with the same levers
6:27
They also don't require much hand strength. I measured about 8 pounds of force at the end of the lever and just under 9 pounds from
6:34
the middle which is pretty light for a rollator brake. And it can make a real difference when your hands aren't as strong as they used to be
6:40
The grips help too. They're contoured so your hand naturally settles in place and you don't have to squeeze hard
6:46
just to keep a hold of them. And if the brakes loosen over time, each side has its own adjustment knob so you can bring
6:52
the tension back yourself without needing a full on repair. Now on top of that, you get 4 puncture proof wheels and they're ready for more than
6:59
smooth floors. Small bumps and uneven patches are easy to get over and you don't have to worry about
7:04
a flat cutting your walk short. Now the thread also has a textured surface that adds extra grip
7:09
when the pavement turns slick. The front wheel can even swivel 360 degrees so a tight corner
7:14
doesn't require a big swing around. And whether you're out shopping, waiting in line, or simply
7:19
need a minute before heading home, the seat is already there when you need it. But this isn't
7:24
just a flat board with padding. It's shaped to follow the curve of your body so there's less
7:28
pressure on your hips the longer you sit. And at 1.6 inches thick, the padding also has a waterproof surface so a few raindrops
7:35
or a spilled drink aren't going to be a big deal. It also has 3 height settings up to about 22.5 inches while the handles adjust separately
7:43
to just over 36 inches. And since the storage pouch sits right in the front, you can reach your things without
7:48
lifting the seat. And speaking of convenience, you won't spend much time on setup either
7:52
This took me under 10 minutes and there wasn't much to figure out. is even quicker, just don't carry it by the seat since it lifts freely when you pick up the walker
