That voice is the voice of our special
0:02
guest today. He had to be Tiffany
0:04
Miranda. She's an artist, a producer, a
0:07
audio engineer.
0:08
>> Yes.
0:09
>> Uh she's a teacher as well. And I can
0:12
see that uh she's really loved in the
0:15
community.
0:16
>> She's done a lot of excellent work.
0:18
She's worked with the likes of DJ
0:20
Khaled, uh Rick Ross, TI, the song you
0:24
just heard, Made for Love by Janet
0:26
Jackson, the Daddy Yankee remix, who was
0:28
from Puerto Rico, and I got to hang with
0:30
Daddy Yankee in Puerto Rico a while
0:33
back. We had a good time. Don Mar, Daddy
0:35
Yanko, Tego, all these guys took me
0:37
around.
0:38
>> Uh Tiffany has Puerto Rican roots. Okay.
0:41
>> In her bloodline, right?
0:43
>> Borua.
0:43
>> PUERTO RICO.
0:45
Ah uh but you you have a very impressive
0:50
uh resume,
0:52
>> you know. Congratulations to you. You're
0:54
a member of the recording academyy's
0:55
producers and engineering wing.
0:57
>> Yes.
0:58
>> Right. Uh you was recognized by the Sona
1:00
awards, right?
1:01
>> Yes.
1:02
>> Where Janelle Monae personally presented
1:04
you with an award praising you for your
1:06
work. Um you worked with Jennifer
1:08
Hudson, you worked for Ford, you worked
1:10
for Barbie, you worked for Nike. You've
1:12
done all of these amazing things and
1:14
you're the founder and president of
1:16
Girls Make Beats. That's how we met.
1:18
>> I want to welcome you to the show. I
1:20
don't even know how you have time to be
1:21
here. Give it up FOR TIFFANY MIRANDA.
1:22
[laughter]
1:23
>> HEY,
1:24
>> thank you. Such an honor. Oh my god.
1:26
First of all, absolutely love the show.
1:28
Love you and everything that you stand
1:30
for. It's a really honor to be here
1:31
today.
1:32
>> Thank you. You hear that, Heather? See,
1:33
>> I hear it. Sway. He wants all of it,
1:35
y'all. He wants all of it. [laughter]
1:37
>> You just don't know, right? Um and you
1:39
brought these amazing students with you,
1:41
right? Give it up for Sparkco who's
1:43
here. Sparkco.
1:45
What's popping?
1:46
>> Okay. And DJ A Love is in the building.
1:50
>> All right. Now, how old are you two?
1:52
>> I'm 16.
1:53
>> Okay.
1:53
>> And I'm 15.
1:54
>> And you're 15. Okay. We're going to come
1:56
back to you because the way they hang
1:58
out with you. I can tell that you you
2:00
keep a loving energy in what it is what
2:02
you do. But how did you get involved?
2:04
Like how did you go the engineering, the
2:07
producing? How did you end up going that
2:09
route? Well, actually my first love has
2:11
always been singing. Okay.
2:13
>> And that's what really introduced me to
2:15
the industry at a very young age. I got
2:17
offered my first contracts at age 15.
2:20
Okay.
2:20
>> Um in Miami, which is where I'm from. Um
2:23
and I had such a, you know, a really
2:25
challenging time trying to navigate and
2:28
be heard in a lot of these spaces. I was
2:30
like, you know what? I'm just going to
2:31
make my own beats. So that really, you
2:33
know, got my love going for production.
2:36
And I was self-taught. I was also a fly
2:39
on the wall at every studio session
2:40
asking a lot of questions.
2:42
>> Um, and I saved up, got my own home
2:45
studio and learned how to use all the
2:48
equipment. And I was like, well, how
2:49
come my stuff still doesn't sound like
2:51
what what I'm hearing on the radio? I
2:53
have the same keyboard. I have the same,
2:55
you know, software program. And that
2:56
really piqu my interest in audio
2:58
engineering.
2:59
>> And through that, I was actually able to
3:02
have sessions at my home and, you know,
3:05
generate some income that way. Um, but I
3:08
really wanted to build out my resume.
3:10
So, that's when I started going out into
3:11
the studio world and doing internships
3:14
at recording studios um, in Miami and
3:17
just saw that it was very
3:18
male-dominated. There were no women in
3:20
these spaces. It was really, really hard
3:22
to be taken seriously and get the
3:24
opportunities that I was working hard
3:26
towards. Um, so parallel to my career, I
3:28
started Girls Make Beats 13 years ago.
3:30
>> 13 years ago. Wow. So, Girls Make Beats,
3:34
that's is 13 years old. Mhm.
3:36
>> I I'm I'm glad you're telling this part
3:38
of the story because it's a
3:40
male-dominated industry. It's a very
3:42
chauvinistic industry as well.
3:44
>> You said it was hard for to get people
3:46
to take you seriously.
3:48
>> What made them finally begin to take you
3:50
seriously?
3:51
>> I think eventually just having to be the
3:54
fastest and most reliable person in the
3:57
room.
3:57
>> Um ultimately I became an asset that
4:00
they couldn't do without and there it
4:02
became undeniable at some point. But all
4:04
the stuff I had to go through to get to
4:07
that point was very unnecessary.
4:09
>> What kind of stuff are we talking about?
4:11
>> Um, you know, at a young age being uh
4:14
kind of overly sexualized and, you know,
4:17
wanting me to sing certain content or,
4:20
you know, making passes at me as a young
4:22
woman in this industry, um, when I'm
4:24
just trying to make music, you know, and
4:26
it's very, very hard.
4:28
>> It's it's slightly disgusting, isn't it?
4:31
Um, Heather, you ever dealt with that?
4:33
Um, no. I always had my brothers with me
4:35
ready to punch somebody in the face.
4:37
>> Yeah. Yeah, that could happen.
4:38
>> And I was always ready to to punch
4:40
somebody.
4:40
>> Yeah. Yeah. There used to be a street
4:42
brawler. [laughter]
4:44
>> No, but I can imagine um you see that a
4:47
lot and you hear it a lot. And you have
4:49
to have a um you know, a mindset going
4:52
in that that's not what I'm here for.
4:53
Exactly what Tiffany is saying. Then you
4:55
have to stand on business and to her
4:57
point make yourself so valuable that
5:00
they they can't deny your work ethic and
5:03
ultimately that will bring you the
5:05
respect. It's unfortunate that it happen
5:07
has to happen that way but um a lot of
5:10
times the respect comes last.
5:11
>> It comes last 100%.
5:13
>> You know Tiffany Miranda is here u
5:15
producer, artist, audio engineer,
5:18
founder of girls make beat citizens. Uh
5:20
we'll open up the phone lines
5:21
2887423345.
5:24
If you relate to that to this story,
5:27
Tiffany, what is it that because it is a
5:30
male-dominated
5:31
industry, what is it that you can tell
5:34
us men about this very thing about the
5:37
difficulties that women make have
5:40
getting accepted in this business? And
5:42
what can we do? What would you s What
5:44
can we do to make that process fair?
5:48
>> Yeah, I would say, you know, be
5:50
supportive, especially in the creative
5:52
process. I feel like there's been a lot
5:54
of rooms that I've been in with male
5:56
producers and it's kind of like you're
5:59
here to be furniture, you know.
6:01
>> Um, and when you do have an idea, you
6:05
know,
6:06
>> try to be again supportive and not
6:07
dismissive, you know, um, because that's
6:10
something that I've experienced a lot as
6:11
well.
6:12
>> You work with Cool and Trey.
6:13
>> Yes.
6:14
>> Cool and Trey. Salute to Cool and Trey.
6:16
I've been to that studio. Those my
6:17
homies from way back, right? What was
6:20
that experience like? And and what was
6:22
it that you were able to learn with Cool
6:24
and Dre?
6:24
>> It's so crazy because when I first met
6:27
Cool and Dre, I was singing hooks for
6:29
them.
6:29
>> Mhm.
6:30
>> And they're some of the very early
6:32
producers that I was looking around the
6:34
studio room and I was like, "Oh, well,
6:35
what keyboard is that?" Okay. They have
6:38
um a Roland Phantom. They have this
6:42
program. It looks really cool. What is
6:43
that? And learned it was ProTools. And I
6:46
just remember that's actually how I
6:48
built my home studio was like looking at
6:50
the studio that we were working in,
6:52
which was actually Cool's mom's house at
6:54
the time. They had um It's funny cuz now
6:56
they have a whole big
6:58
>> compound. Yeah. But it was called Record
7:00
Room. And I remember in that studio,
7:02
this small room was, you know, just a
7:04
quaint little room. Um and it was
7:07
records everywhere. And um nonetheless,
7:11
I saw their studio and I was just like,
7:12
"This is really inspiring. I want to,
7:14
you know, have my own. And then years
7:16
later, there was a full circle moment
7:19
because when I really was in my
7:20
engineering bag, um I I think my mom had
7:24
ran into one of their cousins or
7:26
something like at the gym because my
7:27
mom's always like singing my praises and
7:28
telling people about them. She's like,
7:29
"Oh, I met someone at the gym and
7:30
they're they're related to cool and you
7:32
guys should connect again and they have
7:34
a studio, big studio now." And I was
7:35
like, "Okay, cool. That's amazing." So I
7:37
went and met with them and literally the
7:41
first session actually cool said
7:42
something to me. He was like so you
7:44
engineering now? I was like yeah he's
7:45
like you any good? I said I could show
7:47
you better than I could sell you.
7:48
>> There you go.
7:49
>> And then as the first sessions on me I
7:51
went in first session was amazing. Dre
7:53
literally was like you're my engineer
7:55
now. And in working with the Dre he
7:57
brought me around to all the other big
7:58
studios. I got an opportunity to
8:00
engineer for DJ Khaled for Rick Ross and
8:03
Fat Joe. and he was just always like,
8:05
"Wait till you see Tiff on the board.
8:06
She's nasty. She's nasty." Like, so he
8:09
he definitely helped support
8:10
>> Tiffany Miranda. Man, give him a round
8:12
of applause. I love it. Who's your top
8:17
[laughter]
8:18
>> What
8:19
>> Who's your top five producers?
8:22
>> Definitely Timberland.
8:23
>> Okay.
8:24
>> He was, you know, one of my very very
8:26
early influences. I remember um so not
8:29
to get too deep into that story before I
8:31
name the other four, but um I remember
8:33
when I first started making beats, I
8:35
would literally take a Timberland beat
8:36
and put it into Pro Tools and I would
8:39
loop it every four bars and try to
8:41
recreate what he did because his beats
8:43
were just so crazy. But he taught me so
8:45
much without even knowing it. He was a
8:47
mentor of mine um from afar. Uh but
8:50
definitely Swizzy
8:51
>> Swiss Beats. Okay,
8:53
>> me some Swiss beats. Um, Missy Elliot,
8:56
of course, the queen.
8:58
>> Okay.
8:58
>> Um, let's see. Uh, I would say also
9:02
Cool. And Dre. There's Fire.
9:04
>> Okay.
9:05
>> And Metro Booming.
9:06
>> Metro Booming. You got a a wide variety
9:10
of producers, right?
9:11
>> Okay. Tiffany,
9:12
>> I can't forget my girls, too, you know.
9:14
>> Okay. Sparkle [laughter] is here. All
9:15
right. DJ A Love is my favorite
9:17
producers.
9:18
>> Your producers. So, how does this work?
9:20
and citizens, if you want to get into
9:22
engineering and and and producing, uh,
9:25
this is the time to call 8887423345.
9:29
How does this work? Like, sparkle. How
9:31
did you find Girls Make Beats?
9:33
>> Well, it's actually funny cuz I was
9:35
performing at an event um at Nipy
9:38
Hustles basketball court. Okay. And
9:40
Girls Make Beats was DJing the event.
9:42
So, it was a long long time ago. So, one
9:44
of the girls that has actually graduated
9:46
from the program, her mom was talking to
9:48
my mom and she was talking to me and she
9:49
was like, you know, have you ever
9:50
thought of like DJing and producing? And
9:52
at that time, I was like, "Yeah, I got
9:54
that. I got garageband." [laughter]
9:57
And then from there, I was like, "You
9:59
know what? Like, I really want to like
10:01
get into this cuz I was at the time
10:03
looking over my contracts when I was
10:05
working with other producers and I'm
10:07
like, why am I only getting 25%." So,
10:10
I'm like, why don't I learn how to do
10:11
that and like teach myself cuz not only
10:13
is it fun, but that's what I want to do
10:15
in my future. So, then I linked up with
10:17
Miss Tiffany and the rest is history.
10:19
Like, I've learned so so so much since
10:22
then.
10:22
>> What are you working on now?
10:24
>> Um, right now I'm working on an album.
10:26
I'm working on beats for other artists.
10:29
Um, I'm working on engineering cuz now I
10:32
am ProTools certified.
10:33
>> Okay, there you go.
10:34
>> So, yeah,
10:36
>> Pro Tool certified. And and then if if
10:38
people want to buy beats or hear your
10:40
beats, how do they do it? Do they do it
10:41
through you or how does that work?
10:43
>> Um you can email me at bookings number4
10:46
10:48
and then my team can handle the rest
10:50
from there.
10:51
>> Bookings for [email protected].
10:53
>> Yes, sir.
10:54
>> I like Sparkle. Sparkle got that energy,
10:55
[laughter] huh?
10:56
>> You hear her name?
10:57
>> DJ Avy Love in the building. Y'all want
11:00
to battle? You want to battle her? Come
11:01
up right now if y'all want to [laughter]
11:02
battle.
11:04
>> How long you been DJing?
11:05
>> Um Oh my goodness. I've met Girls in
11:07
Beats when I was like eight years old.
11:09
So, me being like 15 now, that was a
11:11
good couple of years, man. So, almost
11:14
like similar to Sparkle Story, I've met
11:16
uh Girls In Beats at a event. I was
11:18
performing, me and my sister, and I just
11:21
seen them DJ. I was like, whoa, a bunch
11:23
of young female independent women, you
11:25
know, on the stage, you know, showing
11:27
their talent. I was like, this is so
11:28
cool. So, you know, me and my mom
11:30
decided to talk to Miss Tiff and that's
11:33
where my career started, basically. So
11:36
yeah.
11:36
>> Okay. That's incredible. What is it like
11:38
though being is it a
11:40
>> like being around girls makes make
11:43
beats? Like is it a community? Is
11:45
everybody, you know, supportive of each
11:47
other? Like what is a day like when
11:48
you're there?
11:49
>> 100%. No, we're all like family. A bunch
11:51
of like we're like mothers like you know
11:54
each other's daughters, aunties. We just
11:55
[laughter]
11:56
pretty much that's how to explain it.
11:57
That's true. That's true.
11:58
>> We're like a really like you know
12:00
community. We're like we're organization
12:02
but like at the same time we're family.
12:03
So
12:04
>> yeah. very tightknit like all the
12:06
mentors that's titiff
12:09
is studio mom everybody else is your
12:11
sister cuz I feel like when we're in the
12:14
studio obviously like even the classes
12:16
like over zoom like being in person is
12:18
totally different and I feel like that's
12:19
when you form a real bond but even over
12:21
zoom like it's such a safe space and I
12:25
feel like Miss Tiff and all the other
12:26
mentors as well they've really formed a
12:28
community where it's just like a space
12:30
where we're free to be ourselves and
12:32
we're around other people who are our
12:34
age who have their priorities straight
12:36
and they know what they want to do in
12:37
the future. And just being around that
12:39
and having such an uplifting community
12:42
of people around you, it makes you
12:44
inspired to keep creating.
12:46
>> Had the Thank you, Sparkle and Avi Love.
12:48
DJ Avi Love. [laughter]
12:51
Imagine having something like this when
12:54
you were coming up.
12:55
>> Well, that's all I was thinking about as
12:57
they were talking. And I'm glad,
12:58
Sparkle, you mentioned the safety of it
13:00
all because I think a lot of young women
13:03
um need something like this, you know,
13:05
and and you and you kind cuz you're
13:07
trying to figure yourself out too at the
13:09
same time. It's so many directions you
13:11
can go in. Um maybe home sometimes is
13:14
not the best situation. You know, you're
13:16
looking for outlet. And so imagine
13:18
having this extended family, this
13:21
community, and say, "Okay, maybe this is
13:23
not working out for you. Let's try
13:25
this." You know, maybe DJing is not you
13:28
don't have so go over to engineering.
13:30
Maybe you're a writer and maybe if you
13:32
start writing producing this to me like
13:34
to have the encouragement of other women
13:37
around you is so important especially at
13:39
this age because we all know it's a ton
13:42
of things you could get into outside in
13:44
the street,
13:45
>> you know. So to have your sister pull
13:47
you pull your coat and fix your crown,
13:50
you know, or help you polish your crown
13:52
is such a beautiful thing. So I love
13:54
this. Um, I'm excited. I want to see
13:56
y'all perform. I want to, you know, come
13:58
to Are you all based out of Florida,
14:00
Miami area?
14:01
>> No, I'm based out of LA, obviously.
14:05
>> Yeah, I'm also based out here.
14:06
>> So, we have four national chapters.
14:07
>> Okay, break that down.
14:08
>> So, I started in Miami. We still have
14:10
our Miami chapter going strong there as
14:12
well. Um, LA, we actually built a whole
14:15
school out here for the girls in North
14:17
Hollywood. So, they have access to
14:19
top-of-the-line gear and software.
14:21
>> Wait, y'all built a school?
14:22
>> We have a whole school. Yeah, in North
14:24
Hollywood GMBB Academy. [laughter]
14:26
>> How'd you do that? That's a lot of
14:29
>> a lot of prayers and a lot of uh blood,
14:32
sweat, and tears, but we we made it
14:33
happen. Something that was really
14:35
important that I wanted us to have our
14:37
own space um since its inception in uh
14:40
Miami would partner with different
14:42
brands and companies and things like
14:43
that for our space. But having like our
14:45
own, you know, brick and mortar to be
14:47
able to go in and do what we need to do
14:49
whenever we need to do it, it's just
14:51
it's really amazing. Um, and it serves
14:53
as a second home for for these girls,
14:55
which is really great. And we want to
14:56
build one in every city. We have a small
14:58
one in Miami as well. Um, but we're also
15:00
in Atlanta and New York. And then we do
15:03
classes virtually. So, we work with
15:04
girls all over the US. And we've done a
15:07
couple of um international activations
15:09
as well. We did one in Peru and also in
15:12
Kenya.
15:13
>> Wow.
15:13
>> Wow.
15:15
>> Man,
15:15
>> I have an idea. You got to talk about
15:17
you want to go to song first and then
15:19
come back. All right. Let's talk more
15:21
with a love and sparkle and we going to
15:24
play some beats.
15:25
>> Absolutely.
15:25
>> Who sings? Who sings?
15:27
>> Everybody.
15:27
>> Everybody sings. What? [laughter]
15:29
So, okay. Okay. All right. If you enjoy
15:32
what you're hearing, 888742
15:34
3345. We're coming back with girls
15:37
[clears throat] make beats. Shake.
15:42
>> Missy [music] Elliot.
15:43
>> Yeah. I'm very impressed with today's
15:45
guest have to be.
15:46
>> Absolutely.
15:47
>> Tiffany Miranda Sparkles here. DJ Avi
15:50
Love, Sparkle Avi Love. It's uh there
15:52
are students at the Girls Make Beats
15:54
Foundation. Nadara is here, Tyler's
15:56
here. They got a whole crew of just
15:59
talented individuals. Um
16:03
and what I'm happy for Love and Sparkle
16:07
is when we came into the business, there
16:10
was a it was a romance to be a part of
16:14
the culture almost. You know what I
16:15
mean? It's like you get so involved with
16:17
making beats and DJing. It's like your
16:20
craft becomes your partner,
16:22
>> right? It's almost like a um a
16:25
relationship that you have. And I think
16:29
what you're providing for them, to
16:32
Heather's point, you may not realize
16:34
Heather is a recording artist as well.
16:36
She put out a lot of bangers in the 90s
16:39
and and 2000s. She's one of the most
16:42
respected hip-hop artists to ever come
16:44
out of the culture. Heather's also been
16:46
on the big screen in movies. Um, Heather
16:49
is also a writer, you know. Heather also
16:51
is an entrepreneur. She has a cosmetic
16:54
line. She does accessories in the
16:56
kitchen. She also is a chef, right? Um,
17:00
she's also the first AfricanAmerican
17:03
reality TV star. So, well, you grew up
17:05
on Love and Hip Hop and maybe Housewives
17:08
of some somewhere [laughter] in the
17:10
world. Heather was on Real World the uh
17:13
first season on MTV when it all kicked
17:15
off. And her experience coming up in the
17:18
music business is going to be different
17:20
from y'alls because of what you're
17:22
providing for them, you know, and even
17:26
now more so. Heather brought it up
17:28
early. I want to commend you for that.
17:29
>> Yeah. you know, as a father, you know,
17:31
with a daughter, um, and you know, you
17:34
hear all the challenges that she faced
17:36
in in the workplace and,
17:38
>> you know, the, um, in inequities that
17:40
you find that women have when it comes
17:43
to this music business. Now, Sparkle and
17:45
Avi Love could have a different
17:47
experience,
17:48
>> right? And that that has to be
17:50
gratifying for you, right?
17:51
>> It really is. Honestly, I'm grateful for
17:54
all of my challenges because it led me
17:57
to create something that did not yet
17:58
exist, that was bigger than me. Um,
18:01
that's bigger than any song I could have
18:03
created, is actually impacting lives and
18:05
creating a way so that these girls don't
18:08
have to, you know, experience what I had
18:10
to experience and so many other women
18:12
and girls have experienced in this
18:13
industry.
18:14
>> Yeah. Cuck, let's let's rid ourselves of
18:16
the predators,
18:17
>> right? and and and and those who try to
18:20
ruin people's experiences and journeys
18:23
>> uh for whatever reasons. And that's why
18:25
I want to commend you for that cuz
18:26
Sparkle got that. I know why they call
18:28
you Sparkle. [laughter]
18:30
>> Got that energy, right? You Well, and
18:33
both of you speak extremely. Um I love
18:35
your presentation of yourselves, how you
18:37
speak on this mic. All of this is
18:39
included, right? all of this media
18:41
training and all of that different stuff
18:43
is included in what you doing because uh
18:46
like Tiffany, you you got to get out
18:48
there and you got to be your own
18:49
saleserson,
18:51
>> right? What is that like for you knowing
18:52
that I got to man I got to kind of song
18:54
and dance and get people to notice me?
18:56
>> Well, I mean it's easy for me because I
18:58
got a very sparkly personality. So,
19:00
[laughter]
19:01
>> not too difficult. And also what makes
19:03
it a lot easier is the fact that I have
19:05
someone so awesome to look up to and
19:07
really show me the ropes and help me
19:10
know what to say when I'm in certain
19:12
rooms, what not to say when I'm in
19:13
certain rooms. So it definitely helps
19:16
out a lot.
19:17
>> What about like you guys your social
19:19
media experience? See, we didn't have
19:20
that growing up, you know, and it's a
19:22
lot of pressure
19:23
>> once you get in that, you know, that
19:25
social media um u sphere, if you will.
19:28
How are y'all coping with that? Do you
19:30
feel pressure by social media at all?
19:32
The post to perform, to show all the
19:35
accolades, to keep up.
19:37
>> Uh, it's literally like a resume when
19:40
you really think about it. Like now
19:42
social media is just being used as a
19:44
resume. People don't go, "What's your
19:45
number? What's your email?" They don't
19:46
do that. They're like, "What's your
19:48
email? Let me see what you got."
19:50
>> Yeah. It's how many followers do you
19:51
have? Really?
19:52
>> Yeah. That's how it is. And it's really
19:54
irritating cuz they're like, "How many
19:56
followers do you have? How many posts do
19:58
you have up? What's your engagement like
19:59
on your post? I despise it personally,
20:02
but that's that's what you got to do.
20:04
>> That's a part of it, right? And so you
20:05
feel pressure to get followers.
20:07
>> Um, it it's
20:11
[laughter]
20:11
>> Yeah,
20:12
>> it it comes with the territory. Like you
20:14
kind of have to. But I feel like once
20:16
you're like consistently posting and
20:18
just doing what you love and posting it,
20:20
then like the right crowd will follow.
20:22
>> They'll follow. Yeah. Yeah.
20:24
>> Do do you have any um you know what what
20:26
is your do you take breaks from social
20:28
media at all or do you feel the need to?
20:30
>> Yeah. Yeah. It's most like it's really
20:32
needed though. Honestly, I wouldn't I
20:34
would recommend getting too obsessed
20:35
with the social media part because a lot
20:37
can get dragged in even like today like
20:39
there's a bunch of like I don't know the
20:41
world's being weird right now and they
20:42
just make everything make it seem so
20:44
much harder to want to you know post. So
20:47
>> yeah that is very true. I think a lot of
20:49
the work that we do um in creating the
20:52
space for the girls is also because of
20:54
the pressures of social media. We've
20:56
seen um you know a lot of girls who are
20:59
dealing with depression sometimes even
21:01
suicide and all these topics come up. um
21:04
are actually doing a documentary about
21:06
it and that particular subject comes up
21:08
quite a bit because when you think about
21:10
not just the pressure to have a presence
21:12
online, but everything that they're
21:14
being exposed to, you know, at such an
21:16
early age and what they think they have
21:18
to compete with or what beautiful is or
21:20
like just all of these things that
21:21
really is taken a toll, I think on our
21:24
generation um and why I'm so moved to do
21:27
this work because when I was growing up,
21:28
I used to get bullied in school, funny
21:30
enough, by girls, which is the craziest
21:32
girls by girls.
21:33
>> All right. And I think actually that
21:35
helped [clears throat] me be in spaces
21:36
that were male-dominated because I was
21:38
always friends with the guys and I have
21:40
two brothers as well and a younger
21:41
sister.
21:42
>> Um, but yeah, when I left school, the
21:45
bullying stopped, you know, now it's
21:47
like constant, you know, with these kids
21:49
that are like, you know, getting trolled
21:51
online or you don't have enough
21:52
followers or you're not cool enough or
21:54
you're not It's just a really, really
21:56
crazy tumultuous time to be a kid.
21:59
>> Um, and again, why I think spaces like
22:01
this are so needed.
22:02
>> Absolutely. It's unfortunate because um
22:07
your authentic self is so beautiful, you
22:10
know. There's nobody else like y'all,
22:12
you know, and I think social media can
22:15
mess with your head to make you think
22:17
otherwise, but you are beautiful the
22:19
exact way you are. Like I love y'all's
22:21
style, the the hoops, the hoodies, you
22:23
see it all. Like it's it so be that.
22:27
>> Who cares if this person is not
22:29
following or this person is who? It
22:31
doesn't matter. You will have to show up
22:33
eventually. You can fake whoever you
22:35
want to online, but the real you will
22:38
eventually show up, you know, and then
22:40
what's harder, you know, to reverse
22:42
that, you know. So, just be yourself. We
22:45
all experience different things. And it
22:47
doesn't matter if you're 16, 26, 36, 56,
22:51
you know, everyone goes through that
22:53
same process. You would think Sway, you
22:55
know, would have 50 million followers,
22:57
but he's not nice actually off um No,
23:00
I'm just [laughter] joking.
23:02
But
23:04
I've been nice to them.
23:05
>> No, no, [laughter] no, no. But, but
23:07
that's my point. Regardless of what you
23:09
do, there's always going to be somebody
23:10
who has something to say. You know what
23:12
I mean? So, just be yourself.
23:14
>> Stick with your circle. Stick with your
23:16
friends. Stick with what you love and
23:17
what you passionate about. Somehow
23:19
someway, God just kind of makes it all
23:21
work out. You know, don't chase nobody
23:23
else's story. Your story, your
23:25
authenticity is yours.
23:27
>> I love that.
23:28
>> Facts.
23:29
>> I literally live by that. And I'm like,
23:31
there are what 8 billion people in this
23:34
world and there's never been a you in
23:36
all of time of all the billions of
23:38
people that have existed ahead of you.
23:39
Like your story is so unique and being a
23:42
mom also, you know, I see like how hard
23:44
it is to even bring life into this
23:46
world. So just like think about the not
23:48
even the competition, but what you did
23:51
>> as you know, you're being conceived like
23:54
you were here for a reason. You know
23:55
what I mean? like you outdid all of the
23:57
others. Absolutely. To be here, you
24:00
know,
24:00
>> and and and like you mentioned something
24:02
earlier just in terms of what defines
24:05
beauty to some people like in a world
24:07
full of butt naked girls all the time.
24:10
You know, you and your orange hoodie and
24:12
your pink sweatshirt, you stand out.
24:14
>> You know what I mean?
24:16
You stand out like why go down that
24:18
road? Why why jump in that, you know,
24:20
the crabs in the barrels? Be be
24:22
yourself. So, I love what y'all are
24:24
doing. And Tiffany, kudos to you um for
24:27
standing on this and and and having it
24:29
come through this way. It's beautiful.
24:30
>> Don't let anybody define your value.
24:34
>> Absolutely.
24:35
>> Male, woman, doesn't matter.
24:37
>> Followers,
24:38
>> followers,
24:40
oh, don't let industry folks
24:42
>> don't allow them to define your value.
24:45
>> They don't they don't have that right.
24:47
Uh and and they don't have that that
24:49
that qualification to define your value.
24:52
Remember that. Okay. Absolutely. cuz
24:54
y'all got talent. But we going to see
24:55
what them beats are like right now.
24:57
Okay.
24:57
>> Oh. All right. We going to see what them
24:59
beats are like right now. We got them
25:01
here, ladies and gentlemen. Big round of
25:03
applause. Girls make beats.
25:05
>> All right. If you want to go to their
25:06
platform, go to
25:08
>> girlsmakebeats.org and follow us at
25:10
girlsmake beats.
25:11
>> Girlsmake beats.org. And follow them at
25:15
girlsmakebeats. Okay. So, we going to
25:17
play Whose beat we going to play first?
25:19
>> I'm down.
25:20
>> Okay. [laughter]
25:22
What? What? Beat number one or which one
25:25
is it? Uh
25:25
>> some of them got names.
25:26
>> Yes, titles are
25:28
>> titles are good. What's yours? What's
25:29
yours? Sparkle.
25:30
>> Mine uh slide to me. Was that the one
25:31
that was sent in or was it Euphoria?
25:33
>> Negative. I've got
25:34
>> Really? I've got You're mine, Bright
25:37
Side, and worth a worth of something.
25:39
>> Oh, no. I sent Torch. Uh
25:41
>> the new beats.
25:42
>> The new beats. [snorts] Yeah,
25:42
>> look at the new beat.
25:44
>> Did you see my face, [laughter]
25:46
>> man? And the way she name dropped Torch
25:48
was like, nah, Torch got my beats.
25:51
[laughter]
25:51
Yo, Torch, say something. Lonnie Light,
25:54
bring your camo.
25:57
[laughter]
25:58
>> You don't see it for real?
26:02
>> All right, we going to figure this one
26:03
out.
26:05
>> I'm sorry. I'm I just sent it. I just
26:07
sent it. Sorry, I had it in draft.
26:08
>> Okay, cool. We just send it send it
26:10
directly.
26:11
>> We air torch [laughter] said, "Don't be
26:13
trying to blow me up."
26:16
>> Ka, let us see you. I want to introduce
26:18
y'all to u um over there we got Lonnie
26:21
Light.
26:22
>> Yo yo
26:23
>> they're in our New York studios.
26:25
>> There go Kao right there.
26:26
>> Hey ladies.
26:28
>> There go DB our DJ slash he's a producer
26:31
too.
26:33
>> All right. And superstar Torch. How we
26:35
looking Torch?
26:36
>> And I got it about to forward it to John
26:38
now.
26:39
>> All right. And I wanted to add something
26:40
too. Keani who you see in the corner
26:42
there with the MLH hoodie on. His mom is
26:45
my best friend. She started out as a
26:48
studio engineer. Um, her name is Susette
26:50
Williams and just spending time in
26:52
studios and everything. Tiffany, like
26:54
you mentioned, and just getting as much
26:56
experience as possible, she learned so
26:59
many different aspects of the game. Went
27:01
on to become an amazing manager and
27:03
businesswoman in this industry and
27:05
worked with and signed the likes of
27:07
Lauren Hill and and and and so many
27:09
other people. So, um, you never know
27:12
where it can take you. You know, just
27:14
don't put yourself in one box, so to
27:17
speak. You know, there was a time where
27:18
you could only do one thing. People
27:19
didn't even want to see you doing
27:21
anything else, but now you could do so
27:22
much. And she started off as a studio
27:25
engineer.
27:26
>> I actually have a really cool story I
27:27
always share with the girls. Um, so
27:29
again, like I said, my first love has
27:31
always been singing, but I acquired all
27:32
these skills and started making beats
27:34
and engineering. And actually, I was
27:36
engineering a session for Rick Ross. And
27:39
um he had asked me about this song that
27:41
was out cuz he was he wanted to do a
27:44
verse on it or whatever. And I sang a
27:46
little bit of it for him and he was
27:47
like, "Oh, wait. You sing?" I was like,
27:48
"Yeah, I sing and I make beats." He's
27:50
like, "What? You sing and you make beats
27:51
and you weren't going to tell me
27:52
nothing?" He's [laughter] like, "Play me
27:53
some tracks." So I played him a couple
27:55
of my tracks. Literally the second track
27:57
I played him. He went in the booth and
27:59
recorded 12 bar verse.
28:00
>> Wow.
28:01
>> Where's that at?
28:02
>> I hadn't released it, but why you trying
28:06
to get people? I told [laughter] y'all
28:07
he was different, right? Remember I
28:08
tried to tell y'all? Y'all laughed.
28:10
Y'all didn't know what I meant.
28:11
>> I can't believe you, Tiff. I can't
28:13
believe you now.
28:14
>> But the moral of that story is just, you
28:16
know, being uh able to acquire skills
28:18
that can get you in the door, you know,
28:20
and now it separated me from everybody
28:23
else. Like that was like, oh, listen to
28:25
my demo or trying to get in the studio
28:26
with him. Like I literally was already
28:28
there ready to press record.
28:29
>> And it helped her years later, you know,
28:32
and then she didn't come in looking to
28:34
do these other things. She probably
28:35
never imagined she would be management.
28:37
No, but it it helps. So, get as much as
28:40
you can out of this and enjoy the ride.
28:42
>> Absolutely.
28:42
>> You know, in the interim.
28:44
>> Okay, cool. So, we're going to find out
28:45
if they beats are whack or if they beats
28:47
uh sound good.
28:48
>> Why would you [laughter] You're proving
28:50
my point. See, I told my bad. My bad. My
28:53
bad. I'm sorry. [laughter]
28:54
>> I told y'all
28:56
>> it's crazy, right? Listen to the women.
28:58
>> No, I'm just saying [laughter]
29:00
when it comes to the microphone, all
29:01
that, there is no gender to me.
29:03
>> Oh, clock it. Okay. There is no ginger.
29:05
>> This is the world I want to live in. You
29:07
know,
29:07
>> you either bringing it or you're not. So
29:10
>> true.
29:10
>> You know, sparkle.
29:11
>> Oh, wow. [laughter]
29:13
Sparking it now. Right. Right. Right.
29:15
>> I'm calling in everything.
29:16
>> Right. [laughter]
29:18
>> John, what you got?
29:19
>> Oh, you want sparkle? What is it? The
29:20
slide to me.
29:21
>> Slide to me.
29:23
>> Ladies and gentlemen, let us know what
29:24
you think of this in this instrumental
29:26
beat that sparkle has made. 8887423345.
29:32
Is it fly or should it die? No, I'm just
29:34
kidding. [laughter]
29:37
>> Oh my gosh.
29:37
>> That's bruh. No, no, seriously. No, no,
29:40
[laughter] I'm serious. Serious. No, no.
29:41
All kidding aside. Now, call up. Let us
29:43
know what you think of her music.
29:45
Sparkle. You 16 years of age, right?
29:47
>> I am 16.
29:48
>> Wow.
29:49
>> She forgot to add that she started with
29:51
us at age
29:52
>> eight.
29:52
>> Eight years.
29:54
>> Half my life I have been with. Fire.
29:57
>> Okay, here's the beat. 8887423345.
30:02
Uhoh. Hey,
30:04
>> let's go. Sparkle.
30:07
[laughter]
30:09
>> Sparkle on the beat.
30:11
>> Oh, sure. You going to freestyle on it?
30:13
>> One, two. Turn my mic up. Turn my mic
30:15
up.
30:17
All right. Check it. Sparkle. DJ O love.
30:19
Here we go. Yo.
30:24
[music]
30:27
>> Sounds good. It sounds great, actually.
30:31
>> [music]
30:31
>> Nicely mixed.
30:33
>> The clarity in it all. I learned from
30:36
the best.
30:41
[music]
30:42
>> Yeah, that's fire.
30:44
>> You think PB?
30:46
>> Hey,
30:46
>> I know you got a verse.
30:48
>> Wow.
30:49
>> All right.
30:51
>> Sounds good.
30:52
>> Sounds good.
30:53
>> Yes.
30:53
>> Sounds good.
30:54
>> Really good.
30:55
>> Let's give Sparkle a big round of
30:57
applause. Let's go around the table
30:58
here. All right. Um, [applause]
31:00
>> start with you. Uh, Ka, what do you
31:02
think of that beat?
31:03
>> It was fire. It was fire.
31:07
>> Yes.
31:08
>> I love it. I wish I could rap on it, but
31:10
I don't got bars, bro. [laughter]
31:13
>> Get that phone for me, Lonnie. DB, what
31:14
do you think? You made
31:16
>> on the phones.
31:17
>> Oh, Ka, I'm sorry.
31:19
>> No, it sounded dope. You [laughter]
31:21
know, um, don't be afraid to try other
31:23
like drums. I I know the drums that that
31:25
were picked for that one work for that
31:27
beat, but don't be afraid to lose uh uh
31:29
I heard Timberland being referenced. So,
31:31
you know, Timberland had those drums
31:32
that were unique to him. And if you can
31:34
find like kicks and snares and, you
31:36
know, elements that nobody else is using
31:38
right now or or ever, and you can find
31:40
those those even the Neptunes used to do
31:42
it. Forel used to have those snares that
31:44
you knew were his snares. So, if you can
31:46
find some drums like that that you can
31:48
make your signature sound and and
31:49
everybody's gonna know that's so and so
31:51
whenever they hear the beat. So that
31:53
that that's just a little uh cheat code
31:54
that I like to use for people whenever
31:56
they become producers.
31:58
>> Dope. Okay. I'm taking notes. I'm taking
31:59
notes.
31:59
>> Taking notes. You taking notes?
32:00
>> Oh, yeah. I got you.
32:01
>> All right. What about you, Lonnie?
32:02
Light.
32:03
>> Nah, it it definitely wasn't what I was
32:05
expecting. It gave heavy West Coast
32:07
vibes. You know, I I like the the little
32:09
chord progressions you got going on in
32:11
there. But definitely um I agree with
32:13
what DB is saying. Like when it comes to
32:15
production, there's something like what
32:16
he was talking about with the Neptunes
32:18
with Forel. uh people identify for real
32:20
with something as simple as how he
32:21
started his songs with those 4 count
32:23
drops that he had, you know. So, just ma
32:26
embracing individuality in your in your
32:28
production, you know.
32:30
>> Dope. Yes. Absolutely.
32:31
>> We going to go to Michigan where we got
32:33
Warhead on the line. Warhead, welcome to
32:35
the show. What's up? What's up?
32:37
>> What's the word? What's the word? Sway.
32:39
Everybody, what's happening? What's
32:40
happening?
32:41
>> What's popping,
32:42
>> man?
32:43
Who was that? How old was How old is she
32:45
that made that beat? 16. 15.
32:47
>> She right. That's sparkle. Sparkles.
32:49
Talk to
32:49
>> uh I'm 16.
32:52
>> Yeah, you killed that. So that that had
32:54
I I that had a little vibe to it. I
32:57
heard a little Detroit influence in
32:58
that. Like it sound like the uh it had a
33:01
little Detroit to it. But I could
33:02
definitely hear like Two Chains and damn
33:05
Big Sean on there. That was a banger. I
33:07
like that one. That's dope. Send that to
33:10
You might need to send that to Two
33:11
Chains. That was like I could hear his
33:13
vocals on that. That was banging.
33:14
>> Shoot. Let me get his contact. WHERE WE
33:16
AT? [laughter]
33:18
>> I like
33:19
>> Where's the email at?
33:20
>> Yo, that's funny.
33:21
>> Might have to DM him.
33:22
>> Banger,
33:23
>> right?
33:24
>> That's a banger. Much love to y'all.
33:25
Sway. Uh yeah, shorty. Keep it up, man.
33:28
Keep it up. Y'all y'all just got to stay
33:30
focused and uh don't send them send out
33:33
a million emails. Put yourself in
33:34
people's faces and pop up and don't take
33:37
no for an answer. [ __ ] You got to just
33:39
>> absolutely
33:40
>> be in the right places. Grind hard. That
33:42
[ __ ] sound good. Keep it up, man. Y'all
33:44
y'all should be proud of yourselves.
33:45
Keep it up
33:46
>> for real.
33:47
>> Thank you. Thank you.
33:48
>> Sparkles being humble. She actually has
33:50
gotten some placements. You want to talk
33:52
about your
33:52
>> I have. So when I was
33:55
14, I sold a beat to Fly on a Boss.
34:00
>> Wow. [screaming]
34:01
>> Really?
34:01
>> Yeah. [laughter]
34:03
>> I love the sound effects. It's so dope.
34:05
But yeah, I did. And then um also the
34:08
song for Barbie for the You Can Be
34:10
Anything series. That That's all me.
34:12
>> That's you for that. I just did a
34:16
>> publisher.
34:17
>> Wow. Sway. All in her business. Yeah. I
34:19
just did a story. Uh Barbie's doing the
34:21
Mattel you're talking about, right?
34:23
Yeah. They're doing amazing things with
34:24
that. So, salute to you for that. Had no
34:26
idea. Wow. Dope.
34:28
>> At at 16, right? And
34:30
>> at 16.
34:30
>> Yeah. And so you learning about
34:32
licensing, placement.
34:34
>> Yeah. Um I'm actually taking law classes
34:37
at UCLA right now for entertainment law
34:39
as well. So
34:41
>> yeah, you're dope.
34:42
>> Thank you.
34:42
>> When will you be 17? I'll be 17 in
34:44
October.
34:45
>> Okay.
34:45
>> Damn. Salute to your family, man.
34:48
>> Yeah. [laughter]
34:48
Good with you. You all right?
34:49
>> No, because a lot of I mean, I'm not a
34:51
parent, but I can imagine a lot of times
34:54
for parents, your kid comes home, it's
34:56
like, yeah, I want to be a DJ. Yeah, I
34:58
want to be engineer. I want to be an
35:00
artist. They're like, nah, this is not
35:02
what we even this ain't the plan. And
35:05
you have to kind of convince your family
35:07
sometimes, too. You know, I'm taking
35:08
this seriously. This is what what I want
35:10
to do. And so to again to have that
35:12
support around you and then to take it
35:14
even further and taking law classes,
35:18
>> there you go.
35:19
>> You doing it,
35:19
>> girls. Salute. Salute. Salute.
35:21
>> Girls make beats.org or girls make
35:24
beats. You guys follow them. Avi Love.
35:27
You made a beat.
35:28
>> I did indeed.
35:29
>> Okay. Tell us about this beat.
35:30
>> Um, it's called Champ.
35:31
>> Okay.
35:32
>> And, you know, recently I've been like
35:33
wanting to really focus more on, you
35:35
know, making beats. I took a nice little
35:37
break. You know, had my little summer. I
35:39
got off that and I'm now it's like it's
35:41
time to really be productive. I want
35:43
people to hear me. I want people to
35:45
understand me and you know I want them
35:47
to see that I'm a female and I'm young
35:49
too. So it's like you know it's new. So
35:52
[laughter]
35:53
>> it's new.
35:54
>> It's new.
35:55
>> It's new.
35:55
>> Okay. It's Hey, it's new.
35:59
>> Don't be clocking. Don't clock. I can't
36:01
clock.
36:02
>> No. No.
36:03
>> That's not appropriate. I can't.
36:05
>> You know how they tried to recruit you
36:06
for the tent earlier today? You'll be
36:08
recruited for something.
36:09
>> All right. Okay. Stop clocking. All
36:11
right. Uh [laughter] John, you got her
36:13
beat.
36:13
>> Yes.
36:14
>> All right. Here he is. DJ Avi Love.
36:17
>> On the beat.
36:19
>> Oh, okay.
36:23
>> Wait. I
36:25
>> Okay,
36:28
>> WE GOT DJ AVI LOVE IN THE BUILDING.
36:30
>> Let's go.
36:31
>> Girls, make peace. Make some noise.
36:34
>> Pimp.
36:34
>> Marco, I see you. TIFFANY, [music] I SEE
36:36
YOU. Let's go.
37:01
>> DJ Obby love.
37:05
8887423345
37:10
girls make beats.
37:12
>> Let us know what you think of this beat.
37:17
[music]
37:20
>> Open base.
37:39
It's an easy beat to write to, huh, PB?
37:43
You
37:45
>> Yeah, man.
37:48
>> Every time I
37:50
give me a change.
37:51
>> Don't ever let you go down. It's just
37:53
tough, tough, tough. Yeah.
38:04
That's crazy.
38:11
Huh? Huh?
38:13
>> Okay. Riser, [laughter]
38:15
>> don't hurt him. Don't hurt him.
38:17
>> Now, how old were you when you [music]
38:18
made this track?
38:19
>> Um, I actually recently made this.
38:21
>> Just made this. Wow, man.
38:23
>> Congratulations.
38:24
>> I thought Tiffany was going to sing a
38:26
hook over it or something. [laughter]
38:29
I mean, I got my track, too.
38:30
>> Okay. Okay. Let's play Chip. See? See?
38:33
>> So, my uh preface mine a little bit, but
38:35
um my my style that I'm coming out with
38:37
is fusing two of my loves. Um as a
38:41
vocalist, I fell in love with jazz
38:43
music. is actually a huge part of my
38:45
story because a lot of times when I was
38:47
feeling stifled in these recording
38:49
studio spaces um I was actually
38:52
simultaneously the lead singer for a
38:54
20piece jazz band in high school
38:56
learning about the jazz greats like
38:58
Billy Holiday and Nina Simone and Eda
39:00
James and um but at the same time I love
39:02
me some 808s and and hiphop and you know
39:06
it's a big part of my story. Um so yeah
39:09
my beat I'm actually fusing jazz and
39:10
hip-hop.
39:11
>> Are we going to get a little bit of
39:12
vocals? Maybe a little rip.
39:13
>> Maybe a little something.
39:14
>> Okay. Okay. Okay. Cool. Okay. All right.
39:16
I like that. All right. John, you ready?
39:18
This T.
39:19
>> That one's called Your Mind.
39:20
>> Your mind.
39:22
>> Yeah. Yes.
39:23
>> John Z got it.
39:24
>> John Z got it.
39:26
>> Miss Tiff on the beat.
39:28
>> Hey.
39:32
Going to get all our live reactions cuz
39:34
we ain't never heard of this either.
39:35
Shoot.
39:37
>> You played this.
39:39
>> Mhm.
39:48
>> [music]
39:56
>> Hey, hey, hey.
40:06
>> [music]
40:06
>> So, there's this uh song I love from
40:10
Nina Simone.
40:11
>> Mhm. Turn it up. [music]
40:12
>> I want to sample a little bit of it. So,
40:14
it's going to be something like
40:16
>> I put a spell on you.
40:21
Cuz you're mine.
40:28
Oh, you're mine.
40:32
>> [singing]
40:34
[music]
40:35
>> You better watch those things you do.
40:37
[singing]
40:39
[music]
40:40
Oh,
40:41
I lie.
40:45
Oh, I [singing] lie.
40:51
You know [singing] your mind. Boy, your
40:54
mind. Boy, you're mine.
40:58
Oh,
41:03
[singing]
41:04
[music]
41:12
[music]
41:20
shut up.
41:36
Yeah, we need a moment of silence after
41:37
that one. I'm not going to lie.
41:39
>> Bless. [applause]
41:40
SHE BODIED IT. SHE BODY silence
41:44
>> exclusive. It ain't out yet, but that's
41:46
what I'm working with. I'm really,
41:47
really excited about this new sound I'm
41:49
creating. [applause]
41:52
>> I'm sorry. Uh, y'all [laughter] not
41:55
>> take it back, right?
41:56
>> Yeah, I'm blowing. I'm flabbergasted.
41:58
Geez, we waited till the end of the
42:00
interview to do that. We should have
42:01
[laughter]
42:03
>> Well, we have to talk. It all makes
42:04
sense.
42:05
>> It all makes sense. Yeah, you have an
42:07
amazing sultry
42:11
voice. I did not know. I didn't know.
42:14
When you start,
42:17
>> you sound amazing. That was great. Wow.
42:20
Give me a pound. [ __ ] Damn, man. Give
42:22
me [laughter] a Tiffany Miranda. I'm
42:23
blown away.
42:25
>> That was incredible. The beat was crazy,
42:27
too. All three of you guys. Give it up
42:29
for DJ Avi Love. DJ [applause] Avi Love.
42:31
I'm glad she back from her break.
42:34
>> She needed a break. You know,
42:36
>> love got [laughter] high school and
42:37
stuff to deal with. A lot going on in
42:38
life.
42:39
>> Oh, yeah.
42:40
>> Avi Love. How can people reach you?
42:42
>> Um, you can reach me through my
