in chicago um you know executive

and directing and uh and so then they

were like hey listen you know maybe we

can shoot on weekends but

um for the last few years uh i've

actually been

working on and publishing a series of um

novels that i write crime thriller

novels so

uh so i published two of them so i was

working on the third one in the trilogy

so that's what i did on weekends so i

basically had

no time so you know five days a week six

days a week i'm working on the show

and then any spare time that i had um i

was i wanted to finish up the

you know my my latest novel so um i mean

like i

averaged about four and a half hours

sleep but they just there was just

no way you know i could come up with

more time to uh

to make that happen and um and you know

much more concerned with the uh

present and the future than i am in the

it was an honor to be a part of a

an mc as a rapper then i went into radio

tv and and then producing stuff and

all sorts of stuff uh but that's that's

now how i started off when we met you as

an actor but was it directing

and producing well all those things

equally as important to you being the

author at the time that you came into

the business

well i think you know man look if you if

you hang around the game

like you know i've been i've been in the

gang for you know 30 years

and if you hang around long enough and

if you love what you do

um it's going to evolve into other

it's going to evolve also you know for

it's also about ownership it's about

um empowerment um so you know

you have a certain level you know 99.99

of actors have so much only only so much

you get at some point you got to ask

and so what i found

was um you know becoming a director

um i had more power um i i

got into directing years ago i was doing

a movie

it was supposed to be a big movie i

ended up getting fired because they said

i looked too young for the road

and i was devastated and i realized then

i was like yo i don't want to be

you know 50 years old and somebody even

if you're doing it the right way

somebody can fire you so

directing became a means for me having

more

power over my journey that then led to

uh you know the dick wolf camp

came to me one day and said hey listen

have you ever thought about producing we

you know we'd like you to produce

uh the show and so um that led to again

more power and when i say power i'm not

talking about

egotistical power i'm talking about the

power of being in the room and helping

to shape so if they say hey

listen we're going to cast this judge uh

as a middle-aged white male

having a voice in that room and say well

why can't it be a brother why can't it

be a sister why can't it be

latina why can't it be you know asian

why can't it be and

just being having a voice in the room

that's the kind of power that

shifts and shapes things having the

power to

hire um directors people of color

women um that's the kind of power i want

to be very clear i'm not like some power

hungry

egotistical person when it comes to that

i'm talking about

the power that shifts the paradigm that

the perspective of who we are as a

community to be

able to be in a position to do the type

of story that we did tonight

to oversee that to make sure that we're

getting it right and so to have power

over

our images as opposed to um you know

relying on other communities

to have power as they have historically

uh over our over who we are and how we

do things and they get it wrong

so now having being in that position to

me is much more

powerful than what i've been allowed to

have as an

actor and that's that's that's the uh

lends itself to

a better understanding even empathy to

those who watch it do you think watching

these events

like the ones we see in real life unfold

feel like it really helps people to see

things from a different perspective even

if it's on tv

well i think this i think the hope is

you know when you're an artist

your your job is to um

uh really try to focus on delivering

your truth and as much truth as possible

and the truth is multi-dimensional and

it doesn't have no

you know there's no singular ownership

of the truth no one community

owns the truth no one skin color or

gender owns the truth um but

what happens is having opportunities to

have a diverse

representation and participation

of telling the truth that's what you

strive for and you hope that leads to

what we're doing right now brother we're

dialoguing that's

into the ethos i don't control it

i control the work that goes into it i

control the preparation i control it

making sure that i'm on top of my game

hopefully we do such a good job as an

are as an artist right rapper or singer

the visual artist no matter what you do

artist you just hope that your truth

and he said to me he says listen no one

to do a bad job like

writer is doing the best that they can

approach and how i criticize

and how i absorb because i don't like

nobody's no one's setting out to do a

failure no one's setting out to do a bad

mean like the young brother you guys

just had on

um you know devilish ways what like he's

not setting

out to do whatever so people convention

people can do whatever

this person is trying to do the best

they can with what they have

in greater positions of
