Hawkins is with us today L welcome to
1:27
the show brother thanks for me man OG OG
1:31
Queen come on man y'all don't understand
1:33
how powerful this is man I'm just
1:34
grateful to be here word no for real
1:36
what what what's the connection man is
1:38
it just from hip-hop or or just
1:40
listening to the show watching the work
1:42
obviously listening to the show and
1:43
watching the work I've seen so many um
1:45
iconic people pull up and just give bars
1:47
I've I've watched you um have
1:50
conversations that have touched the
1:51
culture yeah you know what I'm saying we
1:53
we've learned from from both of y'all
1:55
wow in so many ways and so as a little
1:57
homie coming up you know what I'm saying
1:58
I just pull up with that energy just
1:59
saying thank
2:01
you to be here is pretty surreal and
2:03
carried away I ain't going to hold you
2:05
the whole hood and Harvey they going
2:06
they going to be proud where's Harvey
2:08
Harvey is right outside of Chicago okay
2:10
that's where you from that's where you
2:11
up is that is that considered a suburb
2:13
of Chicago it cons yeah south suburb
2:16
South subb so you GD what you what you
2:18
grow up as man you know I'm going leave
2:20
my
2:20
affiliations always being an o that op
2:24
[ __ ] got to cut out for 24 we only 5
2:26
months in and you opted
2:30
try to see where we at
2:32
L going be good though trust me okay I'm
2:34
going be good when I go out there you
2:36
good when you with me trust me but what
2:38
was it like growing up in Harvey for you
2:39
like what what made you think you can
2:41
act growing up in Harvey man you know
2:43
Harvey despite how dark it was you know
2:45
we didn't have that many resources I'm
2:47
grateful for the way I was brought up I
2:48
I had a unique unique upbringing um you
2:52
know I went to a private Christian
2:54
Academy okay um and so I was able to
2:57
avoid the feeder schools that led to my
2:59
high school um and so just having that
3:01
Foundation under me I think uh made me a
3:04
soft exception to the rule you know what
3:06
I mean um and my imagination was
3:08
cultivated differently because my
3:10
parents just kind of allowed me to cook
3:13
it was a very very interesting story and
3:15
you believe it or not it was one Easter
3:17
Sunday I had to be 10 years old uhhuh my
3:19
pops got me a duck a like a malard a
3:23
duck yeah duck a white duck the bird a
3:25
duck yeah he had a duck in the box and
3:28
just told me the name and it was my
3:31
I named him Duke cuz even he have to be
3:33
I had a thing for alliteration come on
3:35
Duke the duck was du duck it was my dog
3:38
basically Duke the duck was your dog
3:41
Duke the duck was my dog and everybody
3:42
had pit bulls and rock Wilders in my
3:43
neighborhood but you know I would walk
3:45
Duke like a real dog and he would quack
3:46
back everybody was barking at him and I
3:48
raised him for at least two years my
3:50
grandma didn't want the house to smell
3:51
like Duck so I had to keep him in the
3:53
garage next to my Granddaddy's building
3:54
during the winter in the summer we had a
3:57
a farm style type entament that we kept
3:59
a duck in but it got hard cuz you know
4:02
in the hood during the summer times
4:03
that's when the haters come out uhhuh
4:05
uhhuh and naturally the squirrels the
4:06
rats raccoons start hating on start
4:08
hating on the duck and so I would come
4:09
out sometimes and I would see like white
4:11
feathers all over the yard about the
4:12
duck had been fighting for his life but
4:14
he was strong every time he got merked
4:16
or beat up a little bit he always came
4:18
back quack back he would be at the door
4:20
every time I came back from school he
4:22
would wake me up at the same time every
4:23
morning how would he wake you up g g g
4:27
just get me up
4:30
he would just get me up so this so
4:32
satest day of my childhood s and this is
4:34
in Harvey right I'm the only little boy
4:36
in the hood that got a duck oh my God
4:38
but the squirrels and the raccoons
4:39
hating on him my pops found this pond in
4:42
another neighborhood and he was like yo
4:44
whoever taking care of those ducks to
4:45
take care Duke cuz Duke he he was
4:47
getting banged up my little brother was
4:48
trying to teach him how to fly but he
4:50
didn't understand he was a domestic
4:52
duck you know say your brother didn't
4:54
know that he didn't understand that at
4:56
his age so he was just throwing him in
4:57
the air trying to see if he was going to
4:58
float and he was just he kept on falling
5:00
on the back of his neck he was getting
5:01
real neck problems so we took him to
5:04
this Pond that I had other ducks have to
5:06
be and I left from there and he kept on
5:09
following me back to the car he didn't
5:10
want to leave I was like dude it's not
5:13
sweet for you at home you know if you
5:14
come back somebody going to get hurt I
5:16
don't want it to be you yeah so I left
5:18
him there I would come back and check on
5:19
him every now and then my pops one lying
5:22
I came back he had the cast and some
5:23
crutches like somebody was looking out
5:25
for him for Duke for Duke yeah he was
5:27
the only white duck amongst like all
5:29
other Mard you know what I'm saying we
5:31
TR a darker color so it was easy to
5:33
identify him and he was he was smooth
5:35
yeah except for that one time I came
5:37
back and it was like the winter time and
5:39
natural y'all the ducks have flown South
5:41
yeah Duke was there by itself a yeah I
5:44
should have let a little bro teach him
5:45
how to fly yeah yeah that's on me I all
5:49
right so I I promise I don't have a dark
5:52
side but I thought he was going to be
5:54
Easter dinner I thought so too I thought
5:56
I no I thought hell no I couldn't eat
5:59
duck for a long time honestly just
6:01
started really yeah in honor of my duck
6:03
now I I enjoy a little duck okay I
6:05
thought Duke was done no no yo so you
6:09
had a pet duck I had a pet duck growing
6:12
up that's Gangsta get that man a round
6:14
of applause story that'll make you tough
6:16
man I I couldn't wait to hear the ending
6:19
yeah woo I'm glad Duke didn't die so
6:21
Duke didn't die no Duke didn't die we
6:23
defitely had to give him a ride to
6:24
Orlando every summer I feel like
6:27
it's you couldn't fly he couldn't fly we
6:30
you had to take them sou you had to
6:32
drive them it was wild right they had to
6:34
drive them
6:36
sou yo I want to go back though to um L
6:41
ly's Hawkins by the way ladies and
6:42
gentlemen he's here I want to go back to
6:44
how we intro you and in the conversation
6:47
about these NOS because I find it so
6:49
fascinating and U actually I had to use
6:52
it as a tool of growth spiritually the
6:55
nose cuz it can mess with you they they
6:58
can mess with you SW I had a
6:59
conversation one day years ago about
7:01
auditioning and he said to me I don't
7:03
know how you do it because I like the
7:06
constant nose the nose the no NOS it's a
7:08
lot to deal with and I had to find a
7:10
space for those Nos and not live on them
7:12
too long till I finally get that yes or
7:15
those yeses and you know and then
7:17
understood the NOS when the yeses came
7:19
if that makes sense to you absolutely
7:21
how did how did the process go for you
7:23
cuz I know it didn't we didn't play a
7:25
lot of that clip but what was the
7:27
process because I remember the first
7:28
year I went out auditioned it was
7:31
probably maybe 90 NOS M within um from
7:36
February to December M doing this for
7:39
commercials alone they can rack up can't
7:42
they
7:43
quick no for real they have no problem
7:46
don't even tell you what you did wrong
7:47
it's
7:48
just thanks but n thanks nah n for real
7:52
for real for real for me um one of the
7:54
things and watch this had to be cuz I
7:56
know we got we got more on the way what
7:58
I what one of the first things I had to
7:59
do was take the word audition out my
8:01
vocabulary all
8:02
together it's not even an audition it's
8:04
an opportunity okay every time uhuh and
8:08
if you and if you create the opportunity
8:10
space for yourself then you're not um
8:13
you know the the denial or the or the
8:16
rejection doesn't feel the same because
8:18
you use that moment as an opportunity to
8:21
do a few things you can uh be working on
8:23
something right like sometimes when I
8:24
used to do when I had an audition
8:26
opportunity I'll be like you know what
8:27
for this audition I'm just going to
8:29
focus on um I'm going focus on my own
8:33
imagination I I understand what the
8:35
character description says but my
8:37
imagination is telling me I should go a
8:39
different direction you know and so I'm
8:41
going to use this as an opportunity to
8:42
try something yeah I can use it as an
8:44
opportunity to work on The Voice to
8:46
focus on something specific that way
8:48
whenn Lose or Draw you still improving
8:50
and you're getting better you got that
8:52
work in you got that work in you're
8:53
getting positive shots up even though
8:56
you might be told no you put up a
8:57
positive shot so you just take the
8:59
audition word out of your vocabulary all
9:01
together and it's just an opportunity um
9:03
and then from there you start to trick
9:05
yourself into believing that um you know
9:08
what's yours is yours I don't want to do
9:10
nothing that ain't mine and what God has
9:11
for me is for me most naturally and so
9:14
if you get told no that mean it was
9:15
obviously somebody else's and it makes
9:17
you grateful for whoever that person is
9:19
for the opportunity that they now have I
9:21
like that beautiful L Roy Hawkins is
9:23
here
9:24
AKA officer Kevin Atwater is here the
9:28
language language I've been really
9:29
working on the Power of Words you know
9:33
how my perspective on things if um if
9:37
something falls through I don't say it
9:40
was a failure right you know I I don't
9:42
use those words put that energy on any
9:45
experience or any experience I see
9:47
coming yeah I believe we create fear in
9:49
our own heads right right and so if we
9:52
could create fear we could create
9:54
success right and so what that process
9:56
you're doing I really like because there
9:58
is no
10:00
in that does that apply personal
10:02
relationships personal scenarios as well
10:05
not just professional absolutely
10:07
absolutely um you know on on a social
10:10
level even with uh let's take you know
10:12
when when it comes to talking to young
10:14
ladies for example okay let's talk about
10:15
that what I what I tell them nowadays is
10:17
brother don't get started serious
10:19
conversation serious conversation man
10:21
cuz nose count with that too get out of
10:24
his way beat it that that too they say
10:27
that
10:29
say that I just P the picture of Roy
10:32
okay no but the U the the you just
10:34
simplify the approach right and and you
10:37
try to create something more grounded
10:38
for yourself and so um for yourself for
10:41
for yourself and so sometimes when young
10:43
ladies ask me if I'm dating or what I'm
10:44
interested and I just let them know I'm
10:46
interested more so in just practicing
10:48
good
10:49
habits how can I practice good habits
10:51
with a woman mhm you know what I mean
10:53
and then that way you the the approach
10:55
if you simplify it like I said whenn
10:58
Lose or Draw you're learning you're
10:59
growing you know what I'm saying and if
11:01
as long as everybody involved is
11:04
understand that's really slicky it's
11:06
almost Oakland pimpish but I I know you
11:09
from Chicago so I'mma let you slide I
11:11
know Oakland and Chicago are
11:15
cousin really
11:17
pimpish don't do that other beat I'm
11:19
just speaking the truth I'm here I'm I'm
11:23
interested in simplifying simplifying
11:26
yeah you know cuz sometimes it can get
11:28
way too complicated uhhuh and sometimes
11:30
you it's hard to say and you know I
11:33
can't you know I got a son seven years
11:35
old he's doing a great job his name is
11:37
Roman John you know and um and I'm
11:40
interested in my son watch me work hard
11:43
you know not necessarily convolute um
11:46
things with uh you know extra
11:48
relationships outside of the family like
11:50
I'm trying to build a real Village for
11:52
you know what I'm saying so whoever we
11:54
bring in to those Villages have to
11:56
understand um that good habits is where
11:58
it starts
12:00
you know we start with those love skills
12:01
just trust you know we focus on Love
12:04
Languages a lot hea and I think it's
12:06
hard to sustain Love Languages without
12:08
just the fundamentals trust
12:10
communication reciprocation you know
12:13
what I mean those things um and so
12:15
that's what I focus on like I said I
12:17
think and that simplifies the approach
12:18
and is the same way with audition
12:20
opportunities you just focus on
12:21
something small and then you build up
12:23
and as long as you're putting positive
12:26
energy deposits into the space yeah you
12:29
good yeah it'll pay off Gina's on the
12:31
line from Charlotte say what's up to L
12:33
Hawkins AKA officer Atwater from Chicago
12:37
PD what's up G G live hey hey good
12:40
morning good morning hey hey hey hey L I
12:44
had to call and let me tell you I
12:46
thought I was the only one in the world
12:49
how about I had a pet duck too when I
12:50
was growing up you see
12:53
me what was your duck name her name was
12:56
Cleopatra quack CLE
12:59
[Applause]
13:02
qu lyce you done started something all
13:04
these duck owners about to call up here
13:08
Cleopatra quack that's a fire name
13:11
though y Cleopatra quack she was
13:14
gangster too man she was a PE King duck
13:17
the project got for Easter I got mine
13:20
for Easter too yep I heard you I'm like
13:25
w ducks are perfect pets for Easter but
13:29
perfect gifts yo but they sell PE King
13:31
ducks like right down the street like
13:33
you could get that that is not nice I'm
13:35
just saying she said she had a PE King
13:37
duck I'm seeing the projects I see a
13:40
menu you know what I
13:43
mean duck you one of them mean ones you
13:47
would have been one of them mean ones
13:48
them boys they had their pit bulls and
13:50
German Shepherds I'll be trying to walk
13:52
Cleo right it rain and everything and
13:55
try to let her go get her little worms
13:56
on and everything and they be out there
13:59
down what' you feed your duck I fed mine
14:00
sunflower seeds she like uhh she like
14:04
peas Ted peas and tuna fish okay Smash
14:07
It yep yep I did sunflower seeds most of
14:09
the time and then you know with the
14:11
different flavors I'll would give them
14:12
you know the hot ones sometimes
14:15
really so wait a minute Gina so ly said
14:19
his Grandmama didn't want the duck in
14:21
the house cuz she didn't want the house
14:22
smelling like Duck where'd you keep your
14:24
duck Cleo stayed in my room with me in
14:27
my bedroom with me and she got be big so
14:30
I ended up having to give her away cuz
14:32
her wingspan you know got too long in
14:35
the house and she couldn't stretch out
14:36
like I said we was in a project so we
14:38
was in an apartment wow she stayed in my
14:41
room with me
14:42
and her away she was safe with me wow
14:46
she gave her away what about Duke her
14:49
what happened with
14:52
Duke I will check on him every now and
14:54
then like I said he just kept getting
14:55
left every winter he couldn't fly down
14:57
there so is Duke still with us Duke I
15:01
doubt Duke is still with us I doubt Duke
15:03
is still with us and the memory of Duke
15:05
I do enjoy a good duck meal oh you can't
15:10
Swit up and eat your people n it
15:12
happened by accident once and so ever
15:14
since then I just I just been leading in
15:17

15:21

16:14
set yes
16:18
sir R to the good brother R to the world
16:21
thank you
16:22
doc keep doing what you all doing and
16:26
the Positive Vibes are being
16:29
that's what's up man thank you from the
16:31
heart friendship is essential hey do the
16:33
noise do the the Frat
16:38
noise I hear you big do wow you a
16:42
citizen brother in the morning what just
16:44
a hell happened right there man yo are
16:48
you famous in the Frat do they know you
16:50
as an actor around the country yeah yeah
16:52
yeah yeah and for the most part yeah but
16:55
I I Tred not not that I'm low-key with
16:57
it it's just that um you know I walk I
17:00
walk I walk differently right like I see
17:03
BR and I always let them know I'm in the
17:05
room you know what I mean but I'm not
17:07
that big on um parry's wasn't that big
17:10
on Brands when I did my thing I knew I
17:12
wanted to be an actor I knew I was going
17:14
to um portray different images right and
17:17
so I didn't want to um you know I just
17:19
didn't want to send messages that didn't
17:22
support the story that I was sending so
17:24
if you know I'm the BR you know I'm the
17:26
BR and we know how to have that
17:27
conversation um but and for the most
17:29
part um like I said it walks with me so
17:33
everything that I do in my community
17:35
everything that we do as far as Hood
17:36
development which is the um which is the
17:39
nonprofit arm of be powerful you know
17:41
what I'm saying and how we how we move
17:42
in my neighborhood I prioritize Harvey
17:45
and make sure that we bring hope and
17:47
resources and opportunity to my old
17:49
neighborhood which um 100% the Frat
17:52
supports and um and brothers that like
17:55
that I went through the process with my
17:57
line Brothers um in my specific chapter
18:00
we do a lot of work we do a lot of work
18:02
how would you
18:04
um when you got the role I mean it's
18:07
Chicago PD it's NBC you know what it
18:11
takes to get that right you you know the
18:13
inside part how do you celebrate that
18:16
moment that blessing um and the success
18:19
of it without getting too carried away
18:22
without getting too caught up you know
18:24
what I mean yeah because it's it's huge
18:27
this is network television
18:29
you know and and it's a lot knowing
18:31
where you came from knowing the process
18:33
of it you you beat out a lot of people
18:35
not that it's about that but the process
18:38
of it is really hard to book a network
18:40
gig like this in a successful show what
18:43
do you tell yourself every day like how
18:45
do you sustain to stay in this space um
18:48
that's a great question I appreciate you
18:50
I think the uh what grounds me is just
18:52
understanding the assignment more than
18:54
anything um when I when when I got this
18:57
opportunity
18:59
it was between and I'll tell the story
19:01
that often it was either Chicago PD or
19:04
Ballers on HBO for me wow okay a lot of
19:07
people don't know that yeah that was
19:09
Washington with with John David
19:11
Washington he actually he he got the
19:12
role yeah um that that I let go because
19:15
I wanted to work at home I wanted to do
19:17
Chicago PD but I was offred Ballers
19:19
first okay and so um imagine being at
19:23
this Junction as a as a young man I
19:25
think I was about 25 at the time where
19:27
it's was like okay do you do Ballers or
19:28
do do Chicago PD and Ballers at the time
19:30
with the rock um and uh just HBO in
19:34
general you know it felt like a very
19:36
flashy shiny opportunity that I was
19:39
grateful to you know anybody would have
19:41
been grateful for that but Chicago PD um
19:44
to work at home and even though playing
19:46
a cop didn't feel as glorious as a
19:49
football player there was something in
19:51
my spirit that just told me straight up
19:52
that you know I had the potential to be
19:54
a bridge and so the assignment to be a
19:57
bridge between um my community and cop
20:00
culture is is what excited me about it
20:03
and I think that's what keeps my head on
20:05
the ground because that's what's most
20:06
important more than anything and so by
20:09
the time and I'm grateful that I've been
20:10
able to be on the show for this long we
20:12
just wrapped up 11 Seasons come on come
20:14
on 11 season so you made the right
20:16
choice Ballers been gone Ballers been
20:19
get
20:19
out get out your own show bro like you
20:22
got to
20:23
go but you know what I'm saying but but
20:26
11 Seasons later yeah um um you know
20:29
because we kept our head down and we
20:31
stuck to the assignment did my best to
20:33
uplift the image of the black man
20:36
especially it went in a role like this
20:38
where it was getting tumultous a few
20:40
times I remember after the pandemic and
20:42
when the social unrest and we were
20:44
watching cops um we we were really
20:47
watching cops uh you know fight against
20:49
the culture in ways that we didn't
20:51
understand and so to just stand on this
20:53
role and do it the way I've been able to
20:55
do it and then to be recognized by the
20:56
NAACP right right um I'm I'm I'm proud
21:00
and grateful and not only do I feel like
21:01
I made the right choice but but like I
21:03
said that's what keeps my head on the
21:04
ground that's beautiful that's beautiful
21:07
apprciate we're proud of you L uh give
21:09
it up for L Hawkins man your story is
21:11
Magnificent come back you know you know
21:15
I feel like we got to continue these
21:16
conversations for a fact yeah man um
21:19
this is just a Prelude to more I hope so
21:22
I see us hanging we come we going to be
21:23
here in Chicago May 18th the 18th oh
21:26
yeah yeah I'll be there I'm not going to
21:28
say where we going to be I can't say
21:29
where we're going to be you
21:30
[Applause]
21:32
can't no you have a lot of friends bro
21:35
and they just show up and say sway said
21:37
and then you it puts it everybody in a
21:39
bad spot right not my
21:43
friends they get to go in the party ly
21:46
you know me you seen how while I am at
21:48
the party I see you we was in there
21:49
kicking it we we was having so much of a
21:51
good time we thought we had an interview
21:54
with he was like we did this before
21:57
right I was like no we was we was
21:59
grooving pic just felt so natural no I
22:02
got you but we can't tell we right come
22:05
on but your your disposition in life
22:07
your philosophies how the blessings your
22:10
your discipline how you conduct yourself
22:12
is admirable and we need to hear more of
22:14
that the fact that even taking a rooll
22:17
on that you thought could be a tool to
22:18
be a bridge between the community and
22:21
law enforcement the way you think about
22:23
U the projects you assign yourself to
22:25
the way you want to be there for your
22:27
for your son you know the way you took
22:30
care of Duke I can tell what kind of man
22:32
what kind of person you are man so I
22:34
salute you brother and I congratulations
22:36
all success you made the right choice
22:38
man come on man come on give it up for
22:40
ly hains man he's one of
22:43
us choosing that flash man that's a a
22:46
gem in that too you know it's hard to
22:48
sway point I mean it is it's going now
22:51
but when it's dangling in your face like
22:53
that and you you know you don't every
22:54
just the hot thing you know but you have
22:56
to do the right thing you know and you
22:58
chose that wisely blessings I feel like
23:01
I think the way I'm feeling who we got
23:03
up next Heather be we got we got Winston
23:05
Dukas coming up yeah he um he was uh he
23:08
we all were in the MCU you know you know
23:11

23:13

23:14

23:17
uhuh I'm familiar with the universe okay
23:19
okay all right yeah yeah yeah I'm tapped
23:20
in a little bit a little bit okay yes
23:22
sir I was hoping man maybe we could end
23:24
this with some spoken word oh man I
23:29
work I I'm announced that he's a spoken
23:31
word artist so I I I need to he needs to
23:33
back that up for me oh okay no problem
23:37
all right cool AR capella no no problem
23:39
AR capella too AR capella copy that
23:42
watch this all right can I tell you a
23:44
story yeah would
23:45
you it's one of my
23:47
favorites you might be familiar Big Dog
23:51
Okay Peter picked a fight with Jesus
23:54
okay on a boat full of Honeys and some
23:56
wavy [ __ ] Luke told him he was
23:59
tripping he a't want to listen Peter
24:00
didn't pay attention on a different
24:01
Rhythm he said good Lord if it's really
24:04
you let me do it too Jesus said [ __ ]
24:07
I'm the truth in the wave and the light
24:10
we can walk on water but don't take me
24:12
out your sight and Peter thought he
24:13
heard him right didn't even grab his
24:15
coat he just jumped up off the boat when
24:17
he landed on his boots Peter finally had
24:18
his proof keep your eyes on the prize
24:20
all Peter had to do but he was zooted
24:22
him Matthew had mushrooms in the
24:24
bathroom told Peter he a want no part of
24:26
it now he's on the water and the winds
24:28
got him wobbling all the fears in his
24:30
mind arrived at the perfect time and the
24:32
Thunder From The Storm threw Peter off
24:34
his form he was afraid beginning to sink
24:38
drowning in nightmares and fear of his
24:40
dreams and he cried for the Lord to save
24:41
his soul from the sea and Jesus called
24:43
him right before we hit the bottom threw
24:45
Peter on the ship asking why he ever
24:46
doubted him have a little faith in your
24:49
friend I told you I had you dog but you
24:51
never locked
24:52
in I'm the one you depend on in the dend
24:55
but to your defense that was pretty lit
25:00
next time you on the wave listen to the
25:02
spirit and respect the water Matthew 14
25:06
