POPE LEO XIV DELIVERING ANGELUS ADDRESSVATICAN CITY - JUNE 28: Pope Leo XIV expressed condolences to the victims of the deadly earthquakes in Venezuela and conveyed solidarity with their families during his weekly Angelus address on Sunday, June 28. Delivering his remarks in Spanish after the traditional prayer at the Vatican, the pontiff remembered those who lost their lives in the earthquakes and offered prayers for those affected. Thousands of people gathered in St. Peter's Square ahead of the Pope's appearance. Many remained in shaded areas to escape the intense heat before moving into the square shortly before the Angelus prayer began. On Wednesday evening, the US Geological Survey reported that two earthquakes struck Venezuela 39 seconds apart, measuring magnitudes of 7.2 and 7.5. The quakes caused building collapses in the capital Caracas, and several states, including Miranda, La Guaira, Aragua, Carabobo and Falcon. The death toll has risen to 1,430, according to National Assembly President Jorge Rodriguez on Saturday.
