Hundreds of people attended the ceremony in Bridgeview, a city home to one of the largest Palestinian American communities in the US. Wadea was killed in Plainfield, southwest of Chicago, after his landlord, Joseph M. Czuba, attacked him and his mother, Hanaan Shahin, with a knife. Czuba stabbed the child 26 times, and authorities said the attack was motivated by the victims’ Muslim identity and the Israel-Palestine conflict, according to the Will County Sheriff’s Office. Czuba was later convicted of murder, attempted murder and hate-crime charges and sentenced to 53 years in prison, according to US media reports. Wadea died at hospital, while his mother was seriously injured in the attack.
