Storyline Chinese electric bikes, motorcycles gain traction in UK With petrol prices soaring around the world, Chinese made electric bikes and motorcycles are becoming an affordable alternative in places like Scottland. According to a report in the Financial Times, the Middle East crisis is boosting both order volumes and the number of overseas sales centers carrying Chinese electric two-wheelers. Customers seem impressed by the cost to performance ratio. William, shopper: "It seems like the Chinese ones have got the same power as your regular e-bikes but more range as well, which is better. As I said, same price but you get more range and the same power." Since the outbreak of the Middle East conflict in late February, oil prices in Britain have risen by nearly 20 percent while diesel has climbed by more than 25 percent, reaching three-year highs. Ross Anderson is the director of Flex Electric in Edinburgh and says sales have increased as more people look to make the move from gas to electric. Ross Anderson, Director, Flex Electric: "Last month, I think we probably had our busiest month we've ever had. And you can compare that to last year. It was almost double the sales. I see massive growth hopefully over the next few years for sure." Chinese two-wheeled vehicle exports have also grown substantially in southeast Asian nations. Customs data shows that in the first three months of the year, exports to Myanmar jumped more than 600 percent, those to Cambodia rose by 34 percent, and exports to Laos rose by 25 percent.
