The drill, carried out by the TCG Akcay Command off Seferihisar on Thursday, May 7, began with a briefing by Col. Kursat Kurnaz, commodore of the 1st Search and Sweep Flotilla. Kurnaz said mine weapons continue to evolve in line with developing technology, requiring counter-systems and devices to be constantly improved. He said Aydin-class mine-hunting vessels are capable of detecting underwater mines and destroying them with remotely operated underwater vehicles (ROVs) equipped with sonar and cameras. Kurnaz said the vessels can operate at depths of up to 300 meters, while mine warfare divers using semi-closed circuit diving equipment can dive to depths of 55 meters. He added that light autonomous underwater vehicles allow mine operations to be carried out at depths of up to 1,000 meters, without exposing ships or personnel to minefields. Following the briefing, the mine-hunting vessel approached the designated area and deployed a Light Autonomous Underwater Vehicle, known as HOSA, to scan the underwater zone. After the vehicle returned to the TCG Akcay, specialist personnel evaluated the data and identified the location of the mine. Two mine divers then moved to the area by boat, placed explosive material on the mine and withdrew to a safe distance before detonating it.
