Across the neighborhood, people are adapting to life amid ruined buildings and limited resources, while some children help support their families by collecting recyclable materials from waste sites. Syria’s new administration has been working to restore security and pursue former regime figures accused of involvement in violations against civilians during the conflict that lasted from 2011 to 2024. On Dec. 8, 2024, Syrian revolutionaries led by Ahmad al-Sharaa overthrew the Assad regime, ending more than two decades of Bashar al-Assad’s rule.
