People gathered along the shores of Lake Geneva and other lakes to cool off, while others relaxed in parks and shaded areas as temperatures exceeded 36 degrees Celsius in Geneva. The heatwave has led to new June temperature records at several weather stations across the country, with Basel recording 38.8 degrees Celsius. Meteorologists say the prolonged hot weather is also accelerating glacier melt in the Swiss Alps, raising concerns over the effects of climate change.
