Home to the club team Chivas and opened in 2010, the 48,000-seat stadium sits beside the La Primavera Forest in Guadalajara. Its sweeping roof is designed not only for visual impact but also for sustainability and energy efficiency. Ahead of the tournament, the venue has undergone key upgrades, including Mexico’s first FIFA Quality Pro-certified hybrid pitch, improved digital infrastructure, and high-definition LED lighting systems for enhanced matchday visuals. Co-hosted by the United States, Mexico and Canada, the 2026 FIFA World Cup begins June 11 and will feature 48 nations competing through July 19. The 2026 FIFA World Cup opening match will take place on Thursday at 1900GMT at Mexico City Stadium, featuring host nation Mexico against South Africa in Group A. Mexico will become the first country to host the men's World Cup for the third time. The iconic Azteca Stadium previously hosted the finals of the 1970 and 1986 tournaments.
