WOMAN COLLECTING TOMATOES IN BUCKETKAJIADO COUNTY, KENYA — AUG. 19, 2026: Kenyan wildlife authorities continued investigating the cause of mysterious elephant deaths in the Amboseli-Kimana ecosystem on Wednesday, Aug. 19. In the latest incident, a male elephant collapsed and flailed before dying, adding to a growing number of unexplained deaths. At least 20 elephants have died under mysterious circumstances. According to the agency, preliminary laboratory analysis conducted by the University of Nairobi indicates that cyanide poisoning is the probable cause of the deaths examined. Amboseli National Park, located about 240 kilometers (149 miles) southeast of the Kenyan capital, Nairobi, is one of Africa's best-known wildlife destinations and is internationally renowned for its large elephant population and views of Mount Kilimanjaro. The wildlife agency said it will continue providing updates as more verified information becomes available and urged members of the public with credible information about the incident to report it through its official communication channels.
