The deaths occurred during demonstrations that began outside the facility in Nanyuki before spreading into parts of the town, where protesters burned tires, erected roadblocks and confronted police. Security officers responded with tear gas and fired live rounds into the air as crowds attempted to advance toward the air base. Authorities did not immediately release details on the identities of the victims or the circumstances surrounding their deaths, and local media reported that investigations are underway. Nanyuki, the main urban center in Laikipia County, is located about 200 kilometers (124 miles) north of the capital Nairobi. The protests were triggered by opposition to a US Ebola quarantine center established at the base amid the ongoing Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Critics have questioned why the facility should be located in Kenya and have raised concerns about public health risks, transparency and national sovereignty. The demonstrations came despite a recent High Court order temporarily suspending operations linked to the facility pending the hearing of a constitutional challenge. Speaking Monday evening during a North Eastern Media Roundtable in Wajir, President William Ruto defended the project and revealed that the request originated from US President Donald Trump. Government officials condemned the violence that accompanied the demonstrations, saying peaceful protest is protected under the Constitution but destruction of property and attacks on security personnel would not be tolerated. Authorities said investigations into the unrest are continuing.
