Japan: Armageddon-Like’ Ash Plume Rises as Sakurajima Volcano Erupts in Southern Japan.
May 9, 2026
Osaka, Japan - May 08, 2026 Dramatic footage captured by local resident @naoyan88 shows a massive dark ash plume billowing from Japan’s Sakurajima volcano during an explosive eruption in Kagoshima Prefecture on May 8, 2026. The eruption occurred at around 4:15 p.m. local time, sending volcanic ash approximately 3,500 meters above the Minamidake crater. Japan’s meteorological authorities said ash drifted toward the southeast, with possible minor impacts on nearby crops reported, though no injuries or evacuation orders were issued. The filmer described the towering ash cloud as looking “Armageddon-like” as it rose over the volcanic landscape near Takatoge in Tarumizu City. Sakurajima, one of Japan’s most active volcanoes, experiences frequent eruptions and remains under constant monitoring. Locals in the region are accustomed to volcanic activity, with the filmer later saying residents remained calm during the eruption. Video credit: @naoyan88
