VARIOUS OF LAVA ERUPTING FROM MOUNT ETNA SICILY, ITALY - AUG. 8, 2026: Mount Etna has entered a new paroxysmal phase marked by intense activity at the Voragine summit crater on Saturday, Aug. 8, in Catania, Sicily, Italy. The volcanic activity began to intensify rapidly on the evening of Aug. 6, developing into a powerful lava fountain overnight and into Aug. 7. The eruption generated a large ash cloud that dispersed toward the southeast, with ashfall reported in the surrounding towns of Ragalna and Adrano. A new lava flow was also observed in the Valle del Leone from a new eruptive vent opened at an altitude of approximately 2750. The presence of volcanic ash and the elevation of the aviation alert to red severely impacted operations at Catania International Airport, leading to the temporary suspension and diversion of arriving flights.
