A dense cloud of volcanic ash drifting toward the south-southeast has prompted authorities to maintain a red aviation alert level. The persistent airborne debris forced airport officials to temporarily halt some inbound flights at Catania International Airport and shut down the southwestern sector of local airspace. The ongoing volcanic unrest has been marked by the ejection of volcanic bombs around the upper peak area and heavy ash plumes, according to environmental and geophysics observatories.
