Piedmont, Italy - July 30, 2026 Video shows the slogan “This heat is a political choice” projected onto the dome of the Mole Antonelliana by Extinction Rebellion during a nighttime action. The message was previously used on posters placed in different neighborhoods of the city and was projected again to highlight what the group described as political responsibility for decisions related to climate policies. A second message was also displayed: “Deaths, fires, drought: who pays?” The slogan referred to the impacts of extreme heat waves, wildfires, and drought conditions affecting Europe in recent weeks. The group linked the message to the effects of heat, fires, and water shortages, including the ongoing drought situation in Piedmont. The region has faced repeated wildfires and severe water scarcity, with the Po River reaching very low levels. Extinction Rebellion stated: “What we are experiencing today is the direct consequence of the political choices of the last thirty years.” The group said governments and large oil companies continued supporting an economy based on fossil fuel extraction and consumption despite warnings about climate risks. The protest group also stated that current policies reducing emissions from gas, oil, and coal are being weakened or removed around the world, and argued that climate impacts are already affecting communities.
