Iraq: Armed Conflict Erupts Near Refinery in Northern Iraq.

Erbil, Iraq - August 24, 2026 Armed clashes were reported overnight between members of the Herki tribe and Kurdish security forces in Khabat district, west of Erbil, with heavy gunfire reported near the Lanaz oil refinery and surrounding villages. Local reports said Herki supporters blocked roads and gathered in large numbers following the arrest of tribal figure Khurshid Harki, who was detained by Erbil authorities in July on a judicial warrant over charges linked to previous unrest.
