VARIOUS OF PROTESTORS MARCHING AND CHANTING SLOGANSERFURT, GERMANY - JULY 5, 2026: Protesters blocked roads in Erfurt on Sunday, July 5, in an attempt to disrupt access to the federal party congress of the Alternative for Germany, or AfD. Demonstrators staged coordinated civil disobedience actions on roads leading to the Messe Erfurt exhibition grounds, where the congress was being held. Organizers said tens of thousands of people took part in the demonstrations, while more than 5,000 police officers were deployed from across Germany to secure the venue and clear access routes. The AfD is a right-wing populist party and one of Germany’s largest opposition parties.
