VARIOUS OF POLICE OFFICERS STANDING GUARD IN FRONT OF ANTI-AFD DEMONSTRATORS BLOCKING ROAD / PROTESTERS CHANTING SLOGANS ERFURT, GERMANY - JULY 4: Thousands of protesters gathered in the eastern German city of Erfurt on Saturday, July 4, to demonstrate against the annual congress of the far right Alternative for Germany party, known as AfD. Police deployed large numbers of officers around the Messe Erfurt exhibition grounds as demonstrators blocked roads leading to the venue. Some protesters clashed with police in riot gear outside the meeting hall. The AfD is holding its convention to elect party leaders, with co leaders Alice Weidel and Tino Chrupalla seeking another term at the helm of the anti immigration party. Protest organizers had called for sit in blockades to prevent AfD delegates from reaching the congress. Authorities had expected tens of thousands of demonstrators from across Germany to take part in the protests. The party has gained support amid public dissatisfaction over migration, economic problems and the governments reform agenda. It is also seeking major gains in the Sept. 6 state election in Saxony Anhalt, where it hopes to become the strongest political force.
