Various of White House Storyline Denmark plans to send soldiers to Greenland for the first time later this month, as U.S. President Donald Trump has predicted that Greenland will be under U.S. control by the time he leaves office in January 2029. Denmark has been accelerating its defense buildup, extending military conscription and beginning to include women in the armed force. On Monday, around ‌1,600 recruits began serving under the country's newly extended military service system, embarking on an 11-month service period. In 2024, Denmark announced plans to include women in military service for the first time and extend the standard service period from four months to 11. The country also plans to deploy over 100 soldiers to Greenland for a month later this month. Trump has repeatedly stated his desire to acquire Greenland since he took office in 2025, even suggesting the possibility of using force. During an audio interview on Friday, Trump said the host "should make that bet" that Greenland would be under U.S. operational control by the time he leaves office in January 2029. Greenland, the world's largest island with a population of around 60,000, was a Danish colony until 1953, when it became an integral part of Denmark and its residents were granted Danish citizenship.
