VARIOUS OF VOTERS AND ELECTION OFFICIALS AT POLLING STATIONBOGOTA, COLOMBIA - JUNE 21: Senator and presidential candidate Iván Cepeda, a member of the Pacto Historico party -a political coalition that supports the government of President Gustavo Petro- cast his vote in the second round of Colombia’s presidential election for the 2026-2030 term. His opponent in this electoral process is lawyer Abelardo de la Espriella, who is running for the first time for elected office. De la Espriella has been described in public debate as a representative of far-right sectors and has been linked by analysts to positions similar to those of Argentina’s President Javier Milei and El Salvador’s President Nayib Bukele. The first round of the presidential election was held on May 31. According to results released by the National Registry of Civil Status, the body responsible for organizing and certifying electoral processes in Colombia, Abelardo de la Espriella received 43.74% of the vote, equivalent to 10,361,473 ballots, while Iván Cepeda obtained 40.90%, with 9,688,348 votes. After the two candidates advanced to the runoff, both sought to broaden their electoral base during a campaign period marked by increasing political polarization between their respective platforms and supporters.
