【Voice_over】 China has recently added "brain-computer science and technology" and "embodied intelligence" as college majors in the country's 2026 undergraduate catalog of higher-learning. Tianjin University is one of the first to offer the majors. Students in the class say unlike courses in traditional engineering majors, the first class of this major begins with basic medical content. 【Sound_bite】 Xia Haoran, Student, Tianjin University: "I thought we would only study some hardware knowledge related to brain-computer interfaces. But unexpectedly, we also need to learn a lot of medical and physiological knowledge." 【Voice_over】 A brain-computer interface is technology that establishes a connection and exchanges information between a human's brain and an external device. Professors from both the university's engineering school, and medical school lead the brain-interface classes, carrying out targeted interdisciplinary teaching as a team. 【Sound_bite】 Wang Kun, Teacher of Brain-Computer Science and Technology major, Tianjin University: "It involves a broad range of disciplines, including electronic information, artificial intelligence, biomedical engineering, materials science and neuroscience. In our curriculum, we integrate the knowledge from these fields, so that students can understand where each piece of knowledge fits within the overall brain-computer interface system." 【Voice_over】 School administrators say enrollment for the program this year was 193 students, slightly more than expected.
