Not so fast: Scheffler is dominating but far from Tiger’s stratosphere

Sunday's Open Championship victory by Scotty Scheffler caps such a dominant weekend

many are wondering if we're seeing the second coming of Tiger Woods. It's a nice debate, but one that's a little premature, and the numbers back it up

Is Scheffler dominating the game right now? Yes, he is on a fantastic run with 11 wins and three major championships in just two seasons

prompting number two in the world, Rory McIlroy, to say Sunday, he's the bar we're all trying to get to right now

Scheffler won the Open Championship Sunday with a stroll around Royal Portrush

shooting a 68 to beat Harris English by four shots. Even his peers have taken up the debate

Xander Schauffele, winner of two majors himself in 2024, could only shake his head

I don't think we thought the golfing world would see someone as dominant as Tiger come through so soon

and here's Scotty sort of taking that throne of dominance. You can't even say he's on a run

He's just been killing it for over two years now. Jordan Spieth, a three-time major winner, sees it differently

Scotty's winning despite not having the same type of mindset Tiger had in his heyday

He's not transcending the game like Tiger did. He's not bringing it to non-golf audience necessarily

He doesn't want to go do the stuff that a lot of us go do corporately

corporately, anything like that. He just wants to get away from the game and separate the two

That has not slowed Scheffler down. He's got a long way to go to reach perhaps the greatest player in history, however

Here's a great stat. Tiger and Scottie each took exactly 1 days to win their first four major titles The numbers are different from there Tiger has 15 total majors and a decided advantage in career wins at Scheffler current age of 29

Scotty has 10 consecutive wins when leading after 54 holes, including Sunday

Tiger did it 36 times. It was virtually impossible to catch him once he took the lead

Scotty has been ranked number one in the world for 149 weeks

That's the longest streak since the record holder, Tiger, at 281 between 2005 and 2010

Even Scheffler shrugs off the comparisons. I still think they're a bit silly

You know, Tiger won, what, 15 majors? This is my fourth. Just got one-fourth of the way there

So just, I mean, it's, I think Tiger stands alone in the game of golf

You know, he was inspirational for me growing up. Scheffler made headlines when the week began after he questioned the meaning of it all

asking repeatedly, what's the point of winning tournaments? He reiterated after his win Sunday that golf doesn't define him

though he is one major away from the career Grand Slam. I don't focus too much on that stuff

You know, when this season ends after the Ryder Cup for me, I'll get home and I'll assess kind of where my game's at and things I can improve on

and then kind of go from there. I don't think about winning tournaments

I just look at the body of work I have and just think about ways to improve

In one sense, that process is very Tiger-like, very robot-like. But as we learned listening to him this week, Scotty is motivated differently than Woods was during his peak
