Are you as confused as I am? Because he made that look way too easy. He's literally moving super slow and then just took off in the air
0:06
However, I think I might know why. Typically, people would probably assume that the reason he can do that off of having no speed is probably strength
0:14
However, it might be due to the properties of his tendons. See, tendons are elastic, which means that they want to return to their original shape after you stretch them
0:23
And a property of materials that are elastic is that how much energy is stored in them is directly related to how far you stretch them
0:31
And it's also related to how stiff they are. So if you stretch something that's really stiff, very far, it'll have a lot of energy stored
0:38
However, a stiff tendon requires a lot of force to stretch it and you generate a lot of force in an approach jump by running faster
0:45
So how did this athlete jump so high off of no speed
0:49
It's probably because he has more compliant tendons. Compliant tendons means they are easier to stretch, which means they'll stretch more with less force being generated eccentrically
1:00
And what you'll notice is these types of athletes are usually not very fast
1:04
And they're also not very good one foot jumpers because those events are dictated more by having very stiff tendons and having to run really fast in order to stretch them
1:11
Now, you typically can't make your tendons more compliant, but if you generate more force in a short amount of time, can stretch them a lot more
1:20
And one of the best ways to train this is by doing depth jumps. Specifically off of a low box
1:25
Doing low box depth jumps is going to be very similar to what you're seeing here. If you look at his jump again in slow motion, he's basically doing a depth jump
1:33
The key is you're going to have to do the depth jumps with very, very high intent
1:37
So don't go into the gym and do it nonchalantly and act too cool for school
1:43
Instead, you should probably set a target that's very high and try to touch it and jump as hard as you can
1:48
