Dick Bear, who kindly gave Wray the McBearen to inspire future students to build their dream car. This car has been in the shop for a few months and another amazing helper Esteban Perez is kindly going through the car to see what repairs are needed to bring the car back to it's original glory!

0:05
hi it's ray from proshape a workshop in
0:08
child in Massachusetts and today I
0:11
wanted to show you another character
0:12
you've met Frank super volunteer Frank
0:15
and you know Marc he's the cameraman
0:17
well this is Esteban Perez and he's
0:19
gonna be a regular in a lot of the
0:21
videos and he's been helping out as much
0:23
as possible around the shop he's been
0:25
doing some of his own work too and what
0:28
he's been working on is this car here
0:30
which is you watch that earlier video I
0:33
think about three or four months ago we
0:35
made a video of this car
0:37
it's called amic baron and it was built
0:40
by dick Baer a friend of mine and he did
0:44
it in 2005 and it was the first car he
0:49
ever built
0:50
he came to one of our group
0:52
get-togethers which was a metal meet
0:54
event back in 2004 I believe got
0:58
inspired took a class from me and he was
1:01
in living in North Carolina at the time
1:03
he rented a shop and he got busy and he
1:07
had some friends I believe in the in the
1:10
NASCAR circuit because he did
1:11
advertising work for the NASCAR and
1:13
stuff and he has a knowledge of a CAD
1:20
program I don't know what program it was
1:22
he drew it up and CAD he heavily
1:24
publicized this if you look on the
1:26
internet you're gonna find a lot of
1:27
stuff if you search McFerrin he named it
1:30
the McLaren because it's influenced by
1:33
the McLaren m8b I believe it is which
1:36
had a v8 motor and Dick opted to put
1:40
this Honda VTEC 4-cylinder in which I
1:43
believe he bought used and he used the
1:47
fat man fabrications Mustang 2 front end
1:51
kid in it and he built all the
1:54
suspension geometry for himself in the
1:56
back
1:58
that's a tube frame it's mostly all
2:00
square or rectangle tubing and believe
2:03
it or not he registered this and I
2:05
believe like 2006 or so and he drove it
2:09
around the country for 50,000 miles
2:12
and he was up in Colorado we have one of
2:16
his sons live and he was going pretty
2:19
fast down the road and a deer hit him
2:21
and it flew over the car and he went
2:24
into a ditch and the suspension got
2:26
damaged the ball joint is bent and this
2:29
piece here is bent and some of the rear
2:32
suspension in the back is bent and some
2:34
of the bodywork got banged up
2:36
so Esteban has been tasked with finding
2:39
out what all the problems are and he's
2:43
fixing all the problems and slowly but
2:46
surely trying to find out who's the
2:48
source of all the parts and we found we
2:51
needed a rotor for this and uh it was a
2:53
Mustang uh it's a Mustang too front end
2:55
but it has a Ford Granada rotor on it so
2:58
we got that but we need a new ball joint
3:01
we have to make a new suspension pod in
3:03
the back and that's Esteban's gonna be
3:05
doing all that so I can in the car both
3:09
this car and this Lola Indy car right
3:12
here we're both gifted to me by dick
3:15
dick is 77 I believe now and he just
3:20
felt that he wasn't going to be doing
3:22
anything more with the Cosby's he's got
3:24
bad bad arthritis and he thought that
3:27
these would be very inspirational to my
3:30
students at my classes so we intended to
3:33
fix these sooner but because of the
3:35
corona stuff I had to cancel the classes
3:38
for a while and now we're getting to
3:41
them we got to fixed a little bit of the
3:42
panel work that needs to be fixed and
3:44
get these running and intent is to have
3:47
them outside the shop and when the
3:49
students come to the class we'll get
3:51
them fired up and they can run around in
3:53
the parking lot with them I don't think
3:55
we're gonna be registering them yet but
3:57
possible so this one needs a little work
4:00
too but we're gonna get to that after we
4:02
get this one finished first I'm just
4:04
gonna talk about what I have done with
4:07
the car again we got the car and we are
4:13
like in the process of doing a thorough
4:16
inspection of it just checking what
4:19
needs to be addressed what needs to be
4:21
replaced as Raymond
4:24
the car got a light heat on one of the
4:28
sides so when we started and it was
4:32
missing these when I call it a bumper
4:36
holder it was missing so it was my task
4:39
just to yeah well did cotton and welded
4:43
yeah just use this one for having the
4:46
the pattern and then just weld it in
4:48
place now after that we went through the
4:51
suspension and some of the pieces or at
4:55
least on this side are bent so I
4:58
proceeded to dismantle everything and
5:01
check it out and now the we order the
5:07
pieces that needed to be replaced one of
5:11
them was the caliper and battle there's
5:15
a couple of other pieces that need a we
5:18
need to fabricate or fixed and that's
5:22
where in the process I'm doing that one
5:25
of the challenges that we have
5:26
encountered here is that one it's a
5:30
bespoke creation meaning that dick bear
5:34
made most of the parts and in order to
5:39
replace them we we have to fabricate
5:41
them again and as Ray mentions he used a
5:45
Honda VTEC engine and transmission it
5:50
these specific engine came from the 7
5:54
generation on that Civic Si so because
5:58
it's a Honda we have the reliability and
6:01
because it's a honed that we have tons
6:04
of aftermarket parts that we could use I
6:06
mean we could even stock it has good
6:09
power like around 160 horsepower but the
6:14
sky's the limit I mean we could
6:16
supercharge it supercharge it we can do
6:20
a lot of stuff with it and the regional
6:23
car probably had like 2500 pounds this
6:27
one it's probably 1500 so which well he
6:31
said like 1,000 pounds of the original
6:36
car so even as I said in
6:39
configuration is stuck with the slight
6:42
body it's mostly aluminum and tube
6:45
chassis this car it's gonna have like
6:50
good power good power and handling and
6:53
our ultimate goal here is that like fix
6:57
it and return it to its natural habitat
7:00
which is the racecourse all across a
7:03
band okay we want to talk about the rear
7:08
suspension this is a coil over
7:10
adjustable suspension it's a nice setup
7:13
it's like horizontal coil over fully
7:16
adjustable and he played with a lot of
7:20
spring rates and I think that he found
7:24
the best setup and it's really unique
7:27
he kept obviously most of the transaxle
7:32
from the Honda so it's a nice setup you
7:36
can see here the the chassis the tube
7:40
chassis you can see here in the back how
7:45
he installed the engine it's actually
7:49
backwards but that's that's the way he
7:53
had to use it in order to work with this
7:56
what he created but it works perfect I
7:59
mean even the going through the through
8:02
the gears it's it's it's perfect so we
8:07
still have a lot of work ahead of us
8:09
it's a good project or we're very
8:13
excited we we hope students come and
8:18
also get to enjoy it and drive it around
8:20
a lot
8:22
this is esteban perez r a shillings brow
8:27
shaper workshop here in Charlton Mass I
8:30
hope to see you soon
