hi it's Ray from proch shaer Workshop
0:02
we're going to be changing out this
0:03
Anvil to another Anvil and then we're
0:05
going to be cleaning up the top wheel
0:08
and the Anvil this feature here I have
0:11
in it allows you to Crank It Up on a
0:14
rack and pinion system then it locks
0:16
right here and here lift up the
0:21
wheel and I have a storage facility over
0:25
there for the wheels I'll put it so it'
0:27
be nice and safe I put the wheel in you
0:30
got to hold the rack and pinion so it
0:32
won't drop down
0:33
hard and just kiss it against there lock
0:39
it and then generally I use about an
0:42
inch of thread up here on my adjuster
0:45
I'll back that off a bunch so next I'm
0:47
going to show you how to clean this
0:49
wheel up now I've done a couple videos
0:52
probably about four years ago how do I
0:54
clean the wheels but I got a new twist
0:56
this is the spinner this is a drum
0:58
sander here that you can get at McMaster
1:01
Car and uh let's see I'll turn this
1:04
actually counterclockwise we'll try that
1:06
you can do it both ways I think though
1:09
and then uh we use a hob Freight grinder
1:12
I think they're still about $32 they
1:15
were $ 29 or something and then we make
1:18
this little adapter these are made for
1:20
just a four or 5 in grinding disc we
1:23
make this little adapter which changes
1:24
the thread size so it can accept the
1:26
foam pads we sell the foam pads and the
1:29
adapter on on our website pros
1:55
[Applause]
1:57
shaper.int this up now these these are
2:00
pretty clean already they're not that
2:02
bad but I want to get them really nice
2:04
so I got 600 sandpaper on the foam
2:10
[Music]
2:13
pad let me a look at it now these anvils
2:16
are not hardened I don't have hard lower
2:19
anvil in the shop I really don't see the
2:22
advantage to uh hardened lower anvils
2:25
other than if you're going to be going
2:26
over snotty Wells if you grind your
2:29
wells down there'll be no problem with
2:31
aluminum there's like no problem
2:33
whatsoever with steel there could be a
2:35
problem now I've had students for 18
2:38
years using these wheels and they they
2:40
would bug up the wheels once in a while
2:42
but they're very easy to unbug by just
2:44
sanding them down if they've got a gouge
2:47
in them or something you have to start
2:48
with like 120 paper then go to 220 320
2:52
400 600 you can go to 12200 you go to
2:55
2,000 or whatever you want but I've got
2:57
a new system I'll show you so this this
3:00
is pretty good it's got a few little
3:02
minor scratches in it which I could get
3:04
out I might hit it once more this is a a
3:06
hardened top wheel it's probably 60
3:08
Rockwell or so so this never gets marked
3:11
up uh the disadvantage of having
3:14
hardened Wheels is very hard to profile
3:17
them in a different way if you buy a
3:19
wheel from a manufacturer and there's
3:21
like half a dozen them around the world
3:24
that are making these nobody no big
3:26
companies make the anvils it's always a
3:29
a small outfit making the anvils and a
3:31
lot of them have no idea how to make an
3:33
anvil they just see a drawing and make
3:35
it and uh there is a a science to it and
3:38
there's a little a little bit of
3:40
Witchcraft almost or magic to it so uh
3:43
and and anvils have different uses I
3:46
mean uh technically I on this machine I
3:49
only use three anvils that's it and if I
3:52
need to do a specific job I've got 15
3:54
English wheels in the shop here so I can
3:56
go to the other wheels and get that
3:58
specific job done but that's only like
4:01
less than 2 or 3% of the time these
4:03
anvils the three anvils I use on this
4:05
machine pretty much will make any
4:07
Automotive panel that I need other than
4:10
some super detailed little uh detail so
4:14
let me hit this once more I'll sand it
4:16
some more then we'll do the top and then
4:17
I'll show you the new
4:25
twist again that's 600 sandpaper that
4:28
brings it up to a pretty pretty fine
4:30
finish but we can make it better the
4:31
better the surface of your Anvil and
4:34
your top wheel and especially your top
4:36
wheel because that's the top of the
4:37
panel that it's working on it it prints
4:40
that surface so if you have a mirror
4:42
finish on your top wheel you will get
4:45
mirror finish on your surfaces of the
4:47
panel you're working on and you can
4:50
further improve the panel surface
4:52
quality by buffing it after you uh work
4:55
it into the shape you want so that's the
4:58
lower Anvil that's polished pretty nice
5:00
now now we'll do the top
5:10
wheel now why do we have to polish the
5:13
the surfaces here one the better of the
5:16
surface the better of the panel two what
5:19
happens is when you use this uh on
5:21
aluminum even in steel uh the metal will
5:24
actually flake off so a tiny little
5:28
micro speec of aluminum
5:30
will flake off the piece of aluminum
5:32
you're working on it'll stick on the
5:34
wheel and your wheel in a way oblivious
5:36
and all of a sudden it looks like the
5:37
craters of the Moon on the panel so you
5:40
got to be observant all the time and
5:43
watch your panel if you see any little
5:47
uh flaws these little divots showing up
5:49
and they'll repeat the pattern over and
5:51
over and over again a million times if
5:53
you're not paying attention you've got
5:55
to keep your wheel clean so on the top
5:58
wheel is especially important important
5:59
if you get a little pickup of aluminum
6:01
or steel and also there's you know just
6:04
dust in the air a bad hair can fall in a
6:07
hair can fall out of your head whatever
6:10
it's it's always happening it happens in
6:12
a in a power hammer too but it's more
6:14
prone on an English wheel so you got to
6:16
be digilant and watch for foreign matter
6:20
on your surfaces that you're Wheeling
6:22
all the time so now we're going to do
6:26
the little twist I said we got these
6:27
cleaned up pretty nice that leaves sort
6:30
of a little um uh spiral staytion from
6:35
the 600 grit you probably could get
6:37
those out by going up to 1 1200 then
6:39
2,000 and you can go to I don't know
6:41
what they got today probably go to 5,000
6:43
paper or something I I drop off at 12200
6:46
I haven't chased that demon at all so
6:49
next we're going to do is we'll buff it
6:50
now you can bring it over to a buffer
6:53
and you buff like this if it drops it
6:55
hits the ground it's not a good thing
6:57
plus it's pretty heavy to bring this
6:58
wheel over a buffer now he used to use a
7:02
right angle grinder with a 6 or 8 in
7:05
buff wheel and those things are can be
7:07
pretty nasty we discovered this new
7:09
twist these flap buffing wheels I saw
7:14
those I think maybe on either eBay or
7:16
both eBay and Facebook and I says oh boy
7:19
I'll give those a try because I like the
7:21
idea that when you're using a right
7:23
angle grinder like this to buff and the
7:25
buffer there it's throwing the stuff
7:27
right at you and when you got it this
7:30
way now it's throwing it sideways so I
7:33
like that a lot so there was two types
7:36
that they had advertised they had this
7:38
one this is a a felt that's probably
7:42
boxy bonded or something to this plastic
7:45
backer meant for the small grinder and
7:48
this one has uh I don't know what that
7:50
material is called but it's super strong
7:52
they use it on grinding uh pad backups
7:55
and on grinding disc and also on flap
7:57
discs obviously it's a uh some kind of
8:00
fiberglass mesh embedded in there so
8:02
it's super strong and um I haven't broke
8:05
one of these I went through a couple
8:07
couple packages of them I think they
8:09
come in like six in a package and
8:11
originally it was like under $15 but I
8:14
think they're up to 20 bucks now of
8:16
course they're made in China and uh
8:19
they're super high quality product I
8:20
can't say enough of them I don't know
8:22
the name if you search around for a 5 in
8:24
or 4in buffer this is 5 in this is the
8:27
preferable one you're going to find them
8:31
so uh quick
8:33
demo uh you got a bunch of different
8:36
roues on this is the a polishing Rouge a
8:39
white Rouge and um we also have a a red
8:43
Rouge which is a nightmare it works
8:46
really good it's more aggressive and we
8:48
just did this huge um uh architectural
8:52
job making these pal tree FRS and it all
8:55
it was all out of brass and we had to
8:57
polish them and it was all kinds of
8:58
polishing and it ends up all over here
9:01
it was over my shoes it was on the floor
9:04
it was just a total disaster the rug
9:06
that we had in the office uh we had to
9:09
tear the whole rug up and we we've got
9:10
some tile and we put the tile in I made
9:12
a little video of that before so let's
9:14
put this Rouge on
9:19
here and then just hit this this
9:26
this easy peasy as you can see and the
9:30
job is just unbelievable it does leave
9:32
some buffing marcks and you there's a
9:34
bunch of different uh uh compounds that
9:37
you can use on that to take the just
9:39
like painting you'll get the the swirl
9:40
marks and stuff but it does a beautiful
9:43
job it's quick it's neat uh and you
9:46
don't have to use the red uh you can use
9:48
the white if you've got it up to a nice
9:51
step already now this is straight out of
9:53
the English wheel uh if you wanted this
9:56
perfect you would you would sand it in
9:58
One Direction and then bring that up to
10:00
like uh 600 and then hit it with this
10:03
sanding in One Direction would get all
10:05
the little undulations out uh which you
10:08
could do better with the English wheel
10:10
we weren't being super fussy when we
10:12
wheeled this out so now we're going to
10:14
take this we'll put some more Rouge on
10:15
it and we'll use it to Puff buff the
10:26
wheel now this can get out of control
10:30
and that you can spin it you know lots
10:33
of RPM but you can change the RPM by way
10:36
the way you hit it if you go one way and
10:38
just leave it that way it's going to
10:40
spin up like crazy if you counteract it
10:43
by going like that you're going to be
10:44
breaking it and and stopping all that
10:49
[Music]
10:57
motion so that's got a pretty nice
10:59
polish on it we can wash that with Lac
11:02
thiner that'll take a little bit of the
11:03
buffing Rouge that might be uh hanging
11:06
around there now I put some more Rouge
11:08
on and do the top
11:32
now the rule of thumb is when you're
11:33
buffing or grinding you always go off an
11:36
edge so if you saw her over here was
11:38
getting grabbed by The Edge in that case
11:40
here the proper way to do it would be to
11:42
come over
11:43
[Music]
11:53
here that should be good enough now wash
11:55
that with lacer thinner and uh we should
11:58
be ready to roll thanks for watching
