0:15
what's going on everybody it's matt here
0:16
again from filtergrade and we recently
0:19
comments on our old youtube video about
0:23
um polaroids with the epson v550 so i'm
0:26
just gonna go through a little quick
0:27
updated process using the same scanner
0:32
this time i'll be scanning some of my
0:33
artwork and i'll just take you through
0:36
how to make everything look you know the
0:39
way it actually looks in real life so
0:40
that all the colors are matched
0:42
all the levels are balanced and
0:43
everything like that so let's just go
0:45
ahead and jump into the epson v550
0:48
and onto the computer and and we'll get
0:53
all right so to start when you're
0:56
just regular artwork make sure you have
0:59
blank slide over the transparency unit
1:02
just since we're not scanning film you
1:04
need to have just a plain white
1:06
um after that go ahead and wipe your
1:11
your scanner down just to make sure
1:13
everything's nice and clean when you go
1:17
if you have like a can of air or
1:19
something like that you can use that as
1:21
or like a an eyeglass cleaner something
1:26
then you're gonna just go ahead and
1:27
place your your artwork down
1:29
i usually like to keep it um all the way
1:33
in the top right corner just i always do
1:36
it there just to make sure like
1:38
consistency and everything so just place
1:42
then in your epson scan software
1:46
you're going to want to make sure your
1:48
mode is in document mode and not in
1:51
obviously the scanner is what your epson
1:55
scan setting you're going to use i
1:58
usually just have it on default and it
1:59
just automatically works
2:01
if you want to be a perfectionist you
2:03
can just click document again
2:05
that doesn't really matter so i'm just
2:07
going to leave it on default
2:09
and we'll go into document mode
2:13
like i said before and from here all i'm
2:16
is press preview before i worry about
2:20
just to see what the work looks like
2:24
all right so as you can see it's
2:27
what it needs to be it does not look
2:29
like what we had it as before
2:33
um so we're just going to look at the
2:35
settings and see what
2:36
what's causing this so go into main
2:40
document size and document source this
2:43
but the image type is black and white
2:45
you're going to want to change that to
2:47
and it's going to bring out the whole
2:49
you know image not just the black and
2:51
if you want you can also do grayscale
2:55
people usually think of as black and
2:57
white grayscale is just every single
3:00
of black or white whereas black and
3:03
white they're literally referring to as
3:06
white um just something to keep in mind
3:09
some grayscale stuff but we're gonna do
3:13
dpi for my artwork or polaroids or any
3:17
type of like document
3:18
i usually like to stay 600 or above
3:21
for this one i'll just do a thousand
3:24
i've been doing a thousand recently so
3:25
let's just leave it at that
3:27
um and then let's go down into format
3:30
and like the export settings in the
3:34
image format for my artwork i'm always
3:38
i will jpeg or pdf jpeg is just the most
3:41
standard and easy to use
3:42
less the least amount of hassle so let's
3:46
for file name i usually like to do the
3:51
so the date backwards just this is
3:54
another consistency thing just for the
3:56
archive to make sure that
3:58
i'm always um you know using the same
4:02
format so i can easily go back and find
4:05
um so we're gonna do the date and then
4:08
i'll just do the name of this
4:10
this artwork and then usually i'll scan
4:14
one version of it so let's just use the
4:17
have different numbers for it and then
4:20
so now we're ready to actually scan it
4:23
what i'm going to do is scan one cropped
4:25
version of just the square
4:28
and you can just drag that that tool
4:31
artwork and then i'll do one scan of the
4:36
and to scan both of them at the same
4:38
time we're going to click on the two
4:40
right there and to save it in a specific
4:46
into the folder and let's go ahead and
4:48
select the folder that we're going to
4:57
all right so let's go ahead and open
5:01
and you can see the full this is the
5:05
of the scan it's crazy because it's it
5:10
more detail than what you would actually
5:13
yeah definitely a huge fan of scanning
5:16
and seeing it on the computer gives it
5:20
textured feel that you can't really
5:24
through random digital artworks you know
5:29
and so let's just jump back into epson
5:32
a little bit of the differences um
5:35
in terms of the settings and things like
5:37
that if you go into the advanced
5:39
settings you can change a little bit
5:42
up just to fix it so you don't have to
5:44
do that in like photoshop or
5:46
lightroom afterwards if your image is
5:49
you can obviously just brighten it up
5:51
with the brightness and darkness slider
5:54
this is kind of a preference thing i
5:56
usually like to leave my levels at zero
5:58
unless it looks wrong
5:59
which in this case it doesn't look bad
6:03
sometimes i'll play with the contrast
6:05
settings depending on
6:07
the style for the artwork but again
6:10
i usually leave this just at zero
6:13
it looks normal and then gamma i'm not
6:17
but yeah i never really touched this to
6:20
be honest so let's just leave this at
6:23
and that's pretty much it in terms of
6:25
scanning your artwork
6:26
we're going to go ahead and scan one
6:28
more piece just as another example
6:31
and so for this one let's go ahead and
6:35
um the scan settings i'm i honestly
6:38
never really do this but let's just try
6:39
out magazine settings
6:45
the difference is see what the the
6:46
resolution and everything that we'll get
6:49
i'm gonna go ahead and drag out the box
6:53
and and again i'm just gonna test out
6:56
this setting i'm not too sure how it
7:00
we're gonna try it out i did notice that
7:04
the auto dpi is just 300 which
7:08
i don't really like doing under 600 but
7:10
let's just try it out
7:11
see how it looks this will be a much
7:13
quicker scan since it's not
7:18
but for me i usually just do my scans in
7:22
so like i've worked so i don't really
7:25
although this is pretty i don't know
7:28
it's pretty high resolution still but
7:30
i feel like there's some like blurriness
7:33
getting in the 1000 dpi
7:39
like this seems a little more and
7:40
obviously it's partially just the photos
7:44
this seems to me the one on the left
7:46
that 300 dpi that seems a little more
7:49
rough around the edges and not as sharp
7:51
even just in the black line
7:54
on for the 21 savage one this one's a
7:56
thousand dpi and you can see
7:58
the darkness in this line whereas this
8:03
standard setting on the epsilon scan 2
8:05
software it's not very
8:07
not very crisp so i would just stick to
8:12
and maybe i don't know i i personally
8:15
i'll probably just stick with the
8:17
i think it's much just more consistent
8:21
really it's all a preference thing like
8:24
yeah i hope you enjoyed this little
8:26
quick scanning tutorial if you have any
8:28
specific questions feel free to leave
8:30
them below in the comments
8:31
we also have an article on the blog
8:33
which i'll link in the description below
8:35
um but be sure to check both of those
8:37
out as well so thanks so much and have a
