in today's video we're going to be
0:01
taking a look at a lightweight and
0:03
inexpensive Recon belt kit that I've put
0:07
together stick around it's going to be a
0:09
good video

0:32
this is the shangra LA uh what they call
0:35
their Range Bag tactical range bag but
0:38
what it is is a clone of the Maxpedition
0:45
SaberCat and if you are familiar with
0:47
Max Edition gear and you are very
0:49
familiar with the SaberCat it is a
0:51
belove bag that unfortunately has been
0:53
discontinu many many years ago very hard
0:56
to find on the secondary Market when
0:57
they come up on eBay they go for tons of
1:00
money but shangra la which is a Chinese
1:03
company unfortunately on Amazon is
1:06
producing a bag that looks a lot like
1:07
the saber cat and what's surprising
1:10
about it is it's under $40 for this one
1:13
and the quality is not too bad not as
1:16
good as Max edition of course but this
1:19
will do for now and when you pair it
1:22
with this Condor H harness it makes for
1:24
a very
1:26
comfortable Woods running
1:28
rig so so we're going to take a look at
1:30
this in depth so here it is the shanga
1:34
SaberCat clone um you know I love the
1:38
saber cat I wish I still had one they're
1:41
super hard to find nowadays but this
1:43
will work for now and so far I'm really
1:46
digging it and what's cool about this
1:48
pack this pack is um the quality
1:51
materials are not too bad there's it's a
1:53
Cordura material for the fabric um
1:56
stitching is not too bad there is box
1:58
stitching in some of the SC
2:01
um and it's very modular but the big
2:04
surprising thing is when I got
2:07
this uh the oneq canteen will fit in the
2:11
side of the P the side pockets no
2:13
problem and so this is an Nene Oasis
2:16
Canen uh it is um BPA free it's a
2:21
polycarbonate material of course it's
2:23
semi-transparent this is the exact same
2:25
size as a US military GI canteen except
2:29
for all the improvements much lighter uh
2:31
none of that funky taste or smell just a
2:33
great canteen and it does fit the
2:35
canteen cups now the canteen cup will
2:38
not fit in the side pocket but the
2:40
canteen will fit in there on its
2:42
own another nice feature is that this
2:45
side pocket has a mesh pocket in the
2:48
back so if you want to throw in some
2:50
water decontamination tablets maybe some
2:54
um rehydration packets you can do that
2:57
then all you have to do is zip this up
3:00
up and then there is a cinch strap that
3:04
is actually sewn into the belt so that
3:07
pulls the load in so that's a pretty
3:09
decent
3:11
feature on the front we have a grab
3:14
handle that actually the webbing goes
3:17
all the way down to the bottom and that
3:19
allows me to secure my sitting pad which
3:22
this is a thermes z pad fits very nicely
3:25
down there velcro panel on the front
3:28
velcro panel on the top along with a
3:30
bungee system and a pass through pocket
3:33
so you can stuff gloves or a knife or
3:35
kind of whatever you want up there and
3:37
then we have the belt system now there
3:39
is a pass through here so the belt tucks
3:42
inside here if you want to this pack
3:45
does come with a shoulder strap so you
3:47
can carry this as a shoulder bag would
3:49
make a great camera bag I think but um
3:53
what I'm doing is I've actually hooked
3:56
up that Condor H harness so I can make
3:58
this into
4:00
a very comfortable butt pack 2-in belt
4:04
and
4:05
buckle all seem to be pretty decent
4:07
quality of course here's the H harness
4:09
as you can tell um it's a pretty modular
4:13
piece of gear I can add a hydration
4:16
pocket to the back of this if I want to
4:18
in the future um but the nice thing
4:21
about this is it really distributes the
4:23
load pretty well on my shoulders and
4:25
since this is a lumbar pack um and I had
4:28
it riding pretty high most of the weight
4:30
are on my hips and not on my shoulders
4:32
which I really like so here you can see
4:34
how I've got this attached to the back
4:37
just running those lines that come off
4:39
the harness those straps through this
4:42
Pal's webbing back onto itself and into
4:44
the Buckle and then I just neaten it up
4:46
with some velcro just to keep it tight I
4:49
think one thing I want to do is I think
4:51
I'm going to have my wife or maybe my
4:53
mother-in-law sew a channel right here
4:56
so this will stay in place and be nice
5:00
and tight with the pack but that's an
5:02
easy fix not a big
5:04
deal uh the pass through pocket I really
5:07
don't plan on using it that much so what
5:09
I did is I actually uh put some padding
5:12
in Mine by cutting down an old army
5:14
sleeping pad and that fits in there
5:16
nicely and that helps cushion on my my
5:20
lower back all right so here it is I'm
5:22
going to put it on show you how this
5:24
thing rides and how I can get it on and
5:27
off so the H harness is pretty easy to
5:30
work
5:31
with just flip it
5:36
around get your
5:38
arm in
5:43
there give it kind of a
5:45
shake you do your belt
5:50
first and get that nice and
5:52
tight so the
5:55
weight is down on your hips and then
6:00
what you can do is you can tighten the
6:02
shoulder
6:03
straps and that pulls the weight up a
6:06
little bit and then of course sternum
6:09
strap that pulls the straps in so now
6:12
you're
6:13
taking the pressure off of the outer
6:15
part of your shoulders because you're
6:16
pulling that sternum strap in makes for
6:19
a very comfortable setup for the woods
6:23
and since I've got this sitting High I'm
6:25
actually able to wear a full size knife
6:29
on my belt and access it no
6:35
problem Cold Steel
6:38
srk all right so I'm going to take you
6:40
through the contents so on the outside
6:42
I've got this uh tourniquet holder I got
6:44
this from one Thief Surplus this is the
6:46
Marine Corp issue one fits on the side
6:49
of that pocket nicely with Molly of
6:52
course there's the velcro panel got my Z
6:54
seat on the bottom this front pouch is
6:58
kind of the admin
7:01
pouch so I've got an emergency Poncho in
7:04
here so I can make a quick shelter or
7:06
keep out of the rain of course got a
7:08
myar rescue blanket just to you know to
7:11
make a hasty shelter if I have to I've
7:14
got my easy lap knife
7:18
sharpener with a fine grit diamond and
7:22
then a ceramic on one side love this
7:24
thing works great got my mini right in
7:27
the rain notebook kit right there and
7:31
still plenty of room up front to put my
7:33
phone or a charger or whatever I
7:35
need so as we're going through this kit
7:38
keep in mind that this is supposed to be
7:41
lightweight and not be you know a
7:44
dedicated overnight bag so it's not
7:45
going to have everything that you need
7:47
but there certainly is enough room in
7:50
this bag to carry some
7:53
Essentials this top part is really nice
7:56
because it's kind of like a survival kit
7:58
up here so you open this up and it's got
8:01
pretty decent elastic bands to hold all
8:05
my stuff so I can organize it and then a
8:07
a pass a little slip pocket back here
8:10
and a mesh pocket in the lid here I've
8:12
got a uh a little mini fishing kit
8:16
matches I got my Zippo lighter with
8:21
a butane
8:24
insert I have my live fire fire starter
8:28
which is Fire Starter that you can use
8:30
and then reuse um when you're done with
8:32
it you just close it and that shuts it
8:35
down snuffs it out of course a
8:38
whistle mini uh AAA flashlight this is
8:43
nice because I can actually put this on
8:44
the bill of my baseball cap and now I've
8:46
got basically an improvised headlamp so
8:49
it doesn't have to be anything too fancy
8:53
it just needs to get me back to my
8:55
truck then of course Ferro rod and a
8:58
fire bellows
9:00
always have those with me up in this
9:03
pocket we've got wet wipes for cleaning
9:07
up inside of this bag is pretty cool and
9:10
I I've always like this feature about
9:11
the SaberCat is that it it's kind of
9:13
this u-shaped or clamshell opening so
9:17
when you open this thing you can see the
9:19
contents of your bag so you're not just
9:21
reaching into a a big open bag and and
9:25
rooting around looking for stuff you can
9:27
see everything that you brought keep
9:29
keeps it organized I've got my Atwood
9:32
550 cord dispenser This Is 50 ft of 550
9:35
cord and it's got a
9:37
built-in place to hide a
9:42
lighter pretty cool and it's got the
9:45
cutter built into it right there then
9:49
I've got my first aid pouch this is from
9:51
tough possum gear this is made from xack
9:54
material so it's a good waterproof
9:57
material now I'll have links down in
10:00
below in the description for all this
10:02
stuff then here I've got um my
10:06
750ml
10:08
titanium uh
10:10
pot now this one I've had this for a
10:13
very long time and I've used it quite a
10:15
bit um as you can tell this is from Wild
10:19
camping International they're a British
10:21
company um so it's probably not
10:23
something you're going to go out and get
10:25
from them unless of course you're in
10:27
England but uh there are similar ones on
10:31
Amazon from tox and other companies
10:34
they're all very similar but inside here
10:37
I've got my bandana another lighter I
10:40
got some fire starting cubes and then
10:42
I've got a folding
10:43
Spork and then I've got my
10:46
little snow peak hot lips which if
10:49
you're unfamiliar with those allows you
10:52
to drink on the side of a hot cup and
10:54
not burn your lips pretty essential gear
10:57
for me
10:59
and here is really a favorite piece of
11:02
my gear this is from hidden Woodsman it
11:04
is his signal panel um but what's
11:07
interesting is I really don't use this
11:09
as a signal panel I mean I can in an
11:11
emergency obviously but um I use this to
11:15
put it on the ground and then lay my
11:17
gear out when I'm like cooking something
11:20
in the woods or you know sorting through
11:22
my pack it just gives me a nice dry
11:26
clean and bright area
11:30
to put all my stuff and then in here in
11:33
this pocket I've got some coffee singles
11:38
and then I've got some water
11:39
purification tablets this is my Vargo
11:42
titanium hex
11:45
stove I've used this in some prior
11:47
videos but folds flat easy to set up and
11:51
the cup that I have works with this
11:54
perfectly really makes for a nice
11:57
lightweight way to to um Brew some
12:00
coffee when you're on the
12:14
trail now this is clocking in at about
12:18
11 lb with water um which isn't too
12:23
terrible um of course I've got plenty of
12:25
room in that pack to add more stuff add
12:27
more food I could easily push this into
12:30
an overnight bag uh by adding a poncho
12:33
shelter system to it there's enough room
12:35
on the bottom to add that um a lot of
12:38
different possibilities with this kit so
12:40
um I think this is definitely going to
12:42
replace the old
12:44
Alice belt system that I used earlier
12:47
this year
13:28
God
13:58
