AI Designs Come to Life in Metal Shaping Workshop
With Wray using Midjourney to come up with some amazing car designs, he decided to make a video on how he takes a 2d picture and turns it into a 3d model.
He instructs the viewers on how you can make a small model out of wood and Bondo. Or you can build a wire-form, or finally just take the design you have and hand draw out every possible angle.
With these ideas, you too can take any 2d design and make it a 3d work of art!

hi it's Ray from Pro shaper Workshop
0:02
we're doing videos again and uh if
0:05
you've been watching my Facebook page
0:07
I've been putting up hundreds and
0:09
hundreds of AI C designs and uh we've
0:13
been doing it now since I think November
0:16
of last year so it's almost like eight
0:18
or nine months or so maybe 10 months I
0:20
don't know this was one particular AI
0:23
car I'll put this picture up and this is
0:25
what I've been using to sculpt this what
0:28
you see here before us us and it started
0:32
out as this is another one I'll be
0:34
talking about that in a minute that's a
0:37
pine that I got from a a wooden box that
0:40
uh we did this big architectural job and
0:43
the the brass stalk was tubing was in
0:46
the box so we had like two or three
0:49
boxes and and they're really nice Pine
0:51
boards So I says wa what's so funny they
0:54
you were laughing like
0:57
oh so we got these nice Pine boards and
1:02
uh I've got a planer wood planer planed
1:04
them glued them up like this one and uh
1:07
in this case here there was a center
1:10
core that we glued up and then I had to
1:14
count for this so these had a little bit
1:16
of a relief in them I couldn't make it
1:19
sculpted exactly the way I wanted it but
1:22
it saved a lot of grinding so once I had
1:24
the pine and I accounted for the uh
1:28
cockpit area here so now I've got a
1:31
potential of making a really nice model
1:34
with full features on it and uh this one
1:37
has a really exceptionally nice
1:39
windshield a lot of really cool trim
1:42
with a a a screen on the side of the
1:46
hood and a really nice looking Grill and
1:48
cool bumpers all that stuff we can make
1:51
and add it to this model but what a
1:55
first thing to you have to accomplish is
1:57
to get the model as close as possible
2:00
as the uh pitcher and I've been
2:04
agonizing over that and I probably
2:06
working on this thing for like I don't
2:07
know a couple months now but that
2:09
doesn't mean I've been working on a
2:10
couple months continuous that means like
2:12
an hour here one night and three nights
2:15
later another hour and a lot of Bondo on
2:18
a lot of Bondo off uh but I'm I'm a
2:22
pretty pretty good sculptor and I got
2:24
this side the way I want it there's a
2:26
few little defects little divots I got
2:28
to fill up before building this I was
2:31
going to do it in
2:32
clay but I said well do it in Clay is
2:36
going to limit me because the clay is so
2:39
subject to being easily destroyed by
2:42
somebody putting a thumb in it or
2:44
something this is a super solid model so
2:47
then once I started building I said damn
2:49
I can I can make flexible shape pattern
2:51
off this my flexible shape pattern
2:53
system and I can make actually aluminum
2:56
panels and I can make an aluminum model
2:59
of this as well well and I have a lot of
3:02
scrap brass around I can make a brass
3:04
one so aluminum brass and also this one
3:09
will get all detailed out with all the
3:11
little trimmings and everything and a
3:13
lot of that stuff can be 3D printed now
3:16
and the purpose of this also is we're
3:18
going to scan it and now we can make
3:21
this full size so if we get a commission
3:23
to build it full size or uh I I can
3:27
actually uh afford to build it myself
3:30
here in the shop which it takes a lot of
3:32
time to build one of these cars they you
3:34
know we're talking building the chassis
3:37
getting a a drivetrain for it either new
3:40
or used and rebuilding the drivetrain if
3:42
used so there's a ton of time creating
3:45
the a dashboard and floors and and all
3:49
the interior bits in there it takes a
3:50
lot of time so this is a beautiful
3:53
beautiful design I've never seen fenders
3:56
like this I've been watching or looking
3:58
at every imaginable collect car piture
4:00
in the last 61 years of of being in the
4:03
collector car business and I've never
4:06
seen Fender's Peak like this and it took
4:09
me about six tries to get these the way
4:11
I wanted them on this left side so now I
4:14
got to get the Symmetry and I got to get
4:16
the right side dialed in which still is
4:18
yet to be done uh I think I got the
4:21
proportions pretty good I've got the
4:23
surfaces to clean up a little bit with
4:24
those divots and stuff and this is one
4:27
way so you can make an awesome aome
4:29
model and this is a low dollar Affair I
4:32
think I've I've got a gallon and a half
4:34
of Bondo total that I've used of course
4:37
most of it gets turned into dust the
4:39
wood was for free and it was 27 bucks
4:41
for a gallon of uh glue for gluing up
4:45
the wood and uh I'll probably have maybe
4:49
40 maybe 50 hours in it it's a
4:51
spectacular model and it'll also give me
4:55
the ability like I said to make that
4:57
brass one and aluminum one and these
4:59
will all have value that I can sell and
5:01
then the beautiful little collector
5:03
pieces I just think that this uh if
5:05
you've been watching my Facebook page
5:07
I've posted like I said I'm probably up
5:10
to close to a thousand designs now I've
5:13
created like
5:15
300,000 300,000 designs to make a
5:19
thousand Keepers and of the Thousand I
5:21
probably really like maybe 3 or 400 that
5:25
are exceptional and they are exceptional
5:27
they're as good as anything in the past
5:30
they're only 2D currently so I have to
5:32
go through all these other processes to
5:34
get a 3D interpretation you have to dope
5:37
out what's the back end going to look
5:39
like so you have to be able to design
5:41
the back end you have to scale it and
5:45
proportion it properly and then you have
5:46
to surface it properly so there's a lot
5:48
of skill set but anybody wanting to jump
5:51
in on this you can do an existing
5:53
collector car and there's there's
5:55
literally hundreds of beautiful designs
5:57
that have been done in the past you
5:59
could do the the same thing to but what
6:01
appealed to me is that this is totally
6:04
new and everybody likes new especially
6:07
if it has a a a a hint of the past with
6:10
it and this is like a late 30s French
6:13
design could be a talet logo could be a
6:16
DEA probably a foni fashi design um
6:20
there was other three or four other
6:22
French designers that did similar
6:24
designs like this so also we are doing
6:28
the AI Alpha which we've been on a three
6:30
3 month hiat or so because we had this
6:33
big giant architectural job which was
6:35
blocking our view where we were going to
6:38
film it and progress with it so the AI
6:43
Alpha uh what I did on that is I came up
6:46
with this little drawing and I did the
6:49
same thing for this I had to do a little
6:51
profile drawing and that profile drawing
6:54
I cut out uh this one I copied onto
6:57
tracing paper and then made a a
6:59
cardboard pattern and this is the slug
7:02
here of the pine again we planed it all
7:05
up and glued it all up now this one is a
7:08
coupe whereas that is a open car so
7:11
we'll have to grind like crazy it's all
7:14
right if we grind too much because we
7:16
can fill it again back with with Bondo
7:18
so we're going to sculpt this that Ai
7:21
alha and Mark will put a picture up of
7:23
that we didn't have uh the back end
7:26
design we don't know what it's going to
7:27
look like so
7:30
this is one way of how to develop a 2d
7:34
picture
7:36
into uh 3D object that you can utilize
7:39
both to make the model or to make the
7:42
entire car now there's other ways of
7:45
doing this um there might be a software
7:47
now that you can use I'm not aware of it
7:50
that will turn a 2d cop drawing into a
7:54
3D object I haven't been able to find
7:56
one people have said oh try this try
7:58
that but I have going to find one that
8:00
works so uh I'm intrigued with probably
8:04
about a dozen of the cars that I've
8:06
designed with the mid journey and now
8:09
another way of doing it is what we did
8:12
with the the uh AI Alpha
8:15
design is we started making this wire
8:19
form so I had that picture printed out
8:22
over here on the right side and um I had
8:26
it P printed out at Staples and it the
8:29
the uh colors are not good they're
8:32
they're fading really bad but I just
8:34
needed it for that's the only picture we
8:37
have and this is all done by I bending
8:40
the wire and then tacking it together
8:42
with a MIG welder and we're going to be
8:44
getting on that probably in a couple
8:46
days and we'll be posting more videos on
8:48
the series building this AI Alpha
8:51
wireform so that's one way of doing it
8:54
building the model is another way of
8:56
doing it and then you can also
9:00
do this this another AI design that I I
9:04
generated and I sketch this out quickly
9:08
and there's there's a few mistakes in it
9:10
but that's a starting point to take this
9:13
was a uh right front or left front 3/4
9:16
view of the original AI design picture
9:19
Marco put that into this video and I
9:22
interpreted the side view so I have this
9:25
drawing board and I can make multiple
9:28
copies uh and project this up and get a
9:31
top view we get the the design with a
9:34
rear end which we have no idea what it
9:36
looks like we have the front view so
9:38
I'll get a front view a rear view a top
9:40
view and the side view and you're way
9:43
ahead of the game when you do that so
9:46
that can be uh anybody that's good with
9:49
a cad system like solid works or any of
9:51
the other there's like a half a dozen
9:53
CAD systems they can take those drawings
9:56
and that would make it really easy for
9:58
them to convert it into to a 3D design
10:01
but unless you can do that yourself
10:02
you're going to have to uh farm that job
10:05
out to uh somebody that's really
10:07
competent in CAD design that can do that
10:10
for you and then once they get the cad
10:12
model then you can blow it up full scale
10:15
you can make a uh you can 3D print a
10:17
model with it uh you can build the
10:20
entire car you can cut out a wood Buck
10:22
if you prefer a wood Buck or you can
10:24
make lines that would you can follow
10:26
with the wires and bend your wires and
10:28
make a nice wire form so uh you've got
10:32
the the the straight to wireform by I
10:36
you have the model that you sculpt from
10:40
a a simple drawing and then you have
10:43
this method here which would develop all
10:45
the views all by uh manually sketching
10:49
them out and I'll use I have a series of
10:51
sweeps I can use the sweeps to get my
10:54
lines really nice and stuff this was all
10:57
freehand but I can I can I I know how to
10:59
do a pretty good drawing or you can send
11:03
it out to a cad guy and he can interpret
11:05
it as well when he interprets um uh the
11:09
2D drawing into the 3D object he's got
11:13
to make all those aesthetic decisions
11:16
and I prefer to do them myself they
11:19
might be really masterful at it but it's
11:20
not going to be inexpensive this is just
11:23
time if you want to do it so I hope I
11:25
inspired you let's get build in some
11:28
really cool original designs Scale
11:31
Models you can make them inexpensively
11:34
or you can even make your own full-size
11:37
car walk down that path and you will
11:39
never regret it thanks for watching it's
