alright guys so today's subject is budgets get home bag and what does that mean so it get home bag
1:09
a backpack some type of bag that you keep in your vehicle
1:13
and when you're separated from home you're far away from home and you need to get back home but you can't because your vehicle is disabled
1:21
highways are closed down you know whatever the scenario is you have to take off on foot
1:32
i think it's an interesting subject and it may never ever happen in my lifetime
1:38
but it is it's great to be prepared for that kind of event
1:43
you know you start looking at natural disasters like Katrina and some of that stuff took place
1:49
people were separated from where they were supposed to be now what are they going to do
1:54
it could even mean that you have to stay with your vehicle and hunker down for the night
1:59
so having some gear with you is important but the problem is
2:05
keeping expensive gear in your car it's a recipe for disaster you're inviting trouble because especially in urban areas
2:14
it's very likely your car is going to get broken into if people know you have that kind of stuff in your car
2:20
i've heard many stories about guys who have been storing get home bags in their trucks or cars
2:28
and they get broken into and now they've lost some really expensive pieces of gear
2:34
you know knives even firearms one thing i don't like to keep firearms in my vehicle because of that
2:43
because i don't want to be liable for something that's going to happen if someone breaks into my vehicle and steals it
2:47
and then the other thing is i don't like to keep a lot of expensive gear in my truck
2:52
for that same reason what i thought i would do today is focus on budget
2:58
things that you can find really easily at your big box stores
3:05
in your area you know walmart is a great store to go to for this kind of stuff they have lots of camping
3:13
hunting supplies other stores that have stuff that you may not expect would be your grocery store
3:23
but also they have some items that you can throw in your pack
3:31
that are not that expensive first aid items i'm going to show you what's in my bag
3:38
this is stuff that i've collected over the years this is stuff i've collected over the years
3:48
i've been to a lot of different stores, a lot of it's been on sale, on clearance
3:53
but it's all stuff that you can find pretty easily with the exception of a couple items, there's a couple higher end items that i like to keep in my bag
4:01
that's a really good sturdy knife and my shelter system which i'm going to show you here in just a second
4:09
that's what today's video is all about stay tuned and we will get into it
4:15
alright so the first thing you notice is that i'm sitting on this mylar tarp
4:19
and what this is, this is just your basic mylar nylon reinforced blanket
4:26
space blanket these are a great all-purpose item they don't cost a lot of money
4:32
i think they're under twenty five dollars if you look for them online or
4:36
in stores multiple different uses, you could actually use this for an overhead tarp
4:43
you can use it as a ground cloth you can of course wrap up in it and keep yourself warm
4:49
i really like to use them on the ground, i lay them on the ground, i set my stuff out on it
4:52
it gives me a place to lay down and sit i use them in camp
4:57
so for the situation of getting in your get home bag this is a great all-purpose item to have definitely
5:04
much better than the cheap space blankets that you find at walmart or in the
5:09
you know the survival kits this pouch i just have some basic items so this is
5:21
waterproof matches and this can be found at walmart this is a really inexpensive item that they carry
5:28
it's the uco waterproof match container comes with these awesome beefy
5:38
waterproof matches these last a lot longer than a normal kitchen match
5:46
and they light in all kinds of conditions and it's a nice waterproof container, it has a gasket
5:50
so it's sealed, you can buy replacement matches at walmart and i got a couple of
5:58
bicycle inner tubes around this because those make great fire starting material as well
6:05
another kind of low-cost budget fire starter is this Vaseline and cotton balls
6:11
you know i've experimented with a lot of different types of fire starters and this is by far one of the best it's very inexpensive
6:17
easy to make easy to carry uh... has multiple uses of course you can you know use it for uh..
6:24
using it on chapped lips or whatever but it works great as a fire starter
6:31
just a small roll of duct tape of course the Bic lighter
6:38
I always carry two two is one and one is none magnesium fire starting block with a ferro rod on the side
6:50
this is a good quality one this is not the cheapos that you find in a lot of stores
6:54
this is actually a military issue one uh... so if you're gonna get one of these
7:00
make sure you get a decent one because the cheap ones they just don't work as well uh..
7:06
bank line always a great universal kind of cordage that you can use for a lot of different stuff
7:13
and then just some 550 cord I got this cut up in different lengths
7:18
uh... for different uses multiple uses for that so this little pouch is just a
7:26
kind of my possibles pouch some emergency gear in there
7:35
of course toilet paper now a lot of guys will say yeah why don't you use wet wipes and I like wet
7:42
wipes I think they're great but I have a problem that it seems like every time I put a package of wet wipes in a kit or a bag
7:48
if I don't use them or touch them for a very long time they dry up
7:52
and then they're useless so I've just gone back to carrying normal toilet paper
7:58
I like wet wipes for camping when I know I'm going to be replacing them but
8:03
once you open that package it it's no good and I don't know how long the shelf life on those are so
8:09
I really don't carry them that often uh... hand sanitizer as always
8:15
multipurpose item it's it's good to stay clean when you're handling food or um..
8:23
handling water you want to make sure that your hands are clean
8:27
a basic first aid kit so this has a little bit of everything this has some Advil in it some lip balm
8:34
uh... some eye drops of course different size band-aids you know antibiotic
8:41
ointments and uh... some sting relief for insects alcohol prep pads so just a variety of items it's not a huge trauma kit I don't feel that's
8:49
necessary to carry all the time nice big bandana of course that can wrap your face your head you can filter water with it
9:00
you can lay it on the ground to collect food it's a multipurpose item for sure
9:08
uh... this inexpensive stainless steel water bottle this is single walled it's not a vacuum bottle because vacuum bottles you cannot boil water in so
9:15
this one is by Stanley you know I got this on sale at a grocery store
9:22
it's perfect for what I want to use it for carrying water and if I need to I can
9:27
boil water in it so I prefer stainless steel containers for this type of application
9:34
this is probably one of the more expensive items that I carry and you've seen this in other videos this is the uh..
9:39
bushcraft outfitters messed poncho uh... any kind of tarp or poncho military issue or whatever I think is a good thing to throw in your pack because
9:49
that way you can either cover yourself up if it's raining or create a shelter that's going to get you through the night so
9:59
you know look around do some uh... research on that and find out what the best deal is
10:02
for a poncho or for a tarp of course lighter is better
10:09
a lot of military issue options out there so maybe you can find something in surplus but
10:14
an all-purpose item that I highly recommend uh... this is a saw that I just picked up recently uh..
10:24
it was nine dollars on clearance it's just it was in the hunting section
10:28
uh... a small saw is actually I feel probably more useful than an axe or a hatchet
10:34
a lot of applications uh... easy to carry uh... can definitely get wood knocked down to a manageable size for starting a fire
10:45
inexpensive pair of binoculars these are just Bushnell 10x25's not real expensive but uh..
10:54
definitely come in handy when you're trying to check out the area ahead of you trying to figure out what path you need to take uh... see what's going on
11:03
great for that water bladder uh... this is an outdoor products water bladder this can be had at walmart as
11:11
well not very expensive you know you don't have to have the fanciest uh... water bladder out there
11:18
just something that's going to hold the water and work and these work great and they don't cost a lot of money
11:27
okay this is my cook kit now this cook kit uh... can be found at walmart
11:37
so we have a uh... light my fire titanium spork any spoon will do
11:44
but this is the stanley stainless steel uh... cook kit and i like this because it's you know inexpensive it's very
11:56
durable it's not too heavy has a nice solid handle on it it has a lid
12:04
that has drain holes so you can actually drain rice or noodles
12:08
and inside this thing uh... it comes with cups i took those out
12:13
and i put uh... scouring pad and a some aluminum material to create a windscreen
12:27
another butane lighter and then what i have here is uh... this is just the the standard transia
12:37
alcohol stove alcohol stoves are great because they're inexpensive uh... they're easy
12:44
to maintain they're easy to find fuel for i like the transia because they're really heavy duty
12:51
uh... they're bomb proof and you can actually store fuel in them and it fits
12:55
perfectly in the stanley cup so that and then a couple of uh..
13:01
pot supports these are from ever new they fit right on top of the transia
13:08
and then i have a bottle of denatured alcohol which you can get at the hardware store
13:14
so that's the cook kit nothing too fancy but it gives me the ability to heat water make coffee
13:24
boil water and then for food i don't carry a ton of food but
13:31
you know some nice store bought options are ramen noodles cliff bars for quick energy
13:39
uh... a variety of coffee packets cream sugar uh... a little package of spam to add to your noodles so you have
13:47
enough food here to get you through you know a couple days
13:53
uh... i've seen this cup in probably a lot of my videos this is a walmart special
13:58
a little silicone collapsible cup of course uh... cutting tools are important so this is just a leatherman
14:08
uh... i believe this is the which one is this this is a leatherman sidekick it's not really an expensive uh... multi tool but
14:23
it's a nice multi tool and it has just what i need
14:28
cutting blade a saw some screwdrivers so just a variety of tools it makes life a little bit easier
14:38
you just never know what you're going to be up against and if i lose this thing it's not really that big of a deal to me it's not
14:46
really an expensive uh... multi tool now this option is probably a little bit more expensive than most people
14:55
uh... maybe want to spend this is a esse uh... three a great all-purpose knife
15:04
you know it's not a big knife uh... but it definitely gets the job done it's full tang
15:10
uh... you know you can baton this through wood you can feather stick with it
15:15
uh... it's just heavy duty and it's i've had it for a very long time i really like this knife so
15:20
it goes in my kit couple cheap lighting options for you this is uh... a flashlight by bushnell
15:32
you get these at walmart and it actually comes with a headlamp
15:36
which is kinda nice and this is the kind of headlamp that you actually just clip onto the bill of
15:41
your baseball cap or whatever so uh... these run on AA or uh..
15:47
excuse me AAA's and the flashlight runs on AA's so you know flash these are batteries that are easily found uh... it's you know a
15:56
very bright flashlight has a couple different settings
16:08
always carry a little blue foam pad with me this is just cut from a sleeping pad
16:14
uh... makes it nice when you've got a kneel on the ground and start a fire or
16:18
you know do something on your vehicle you've got something you can actually kneel on
16:25
uh... i like to carry a pad of paper and some pens and a small compass so this is
16:34
a write and rain notepad and the notepad cover this comes from countycom
16:41
online and it's made by uh... martak extreme and in here i have a silva
16:51
wrist compass and then just a couple of pens and then i also carry
17:01
some grid readers from apps a few uh... trash bags plastic bags just for gathering stuff and
17:14
wrapping things up in case they get wet alright let's talk about the backpack
17:20
so this is the most important component this is what you're going to carry everything and now
17:26
i have have owned and do own uh... some really nice high-end backpacks and
17:38
you know a lot of times people look at those and go there's no way i'm going to spend that kind of money on a bag
17:43
and that's totally understandable i get it so this is a very inexpensive
17:51
but great solution for uh... your get home bag bug out bag whatever you want to use it for
17:57
this is by field line tactical uh... these are sold at walmart uh... meyer
18:05
uh... i've seen them at some other sporting goods stores this is basically
18:10
field line tactical's clone of a five eleven rush twelve with a few features that are different the nice thing is that this bag actually
18:17
has a water bottle pocket on the side so that gives me the ability
18:22
to carry my water bottle on the outside of my pack doesn't take up a lot of extra room
18:28
easy to get to so all in all it's a uh... it's a really great
18:37
you know small but spacious backpack that you can throw in your truck and
18:44
the great thing about this bag is twenty bucks well i found it on sale for twenty bucks but
18:52
retail they're probably about twenty five twenty seven you just have to shop
18:56
around and see who has the best deal but i mean if someone steals this out of my truck i'm not going to cry about it
19:03
because i can go out and buy another one pretty inexpensively and it's pretty comfortable
19:09
has a nice shoulder pad system on it harness on it
19:20
a lot of padding on the back you know the materials on this bag are not as high end as some of the other
19:27
tactical companies out there it's cheaper material that's why it's so inexpensive
19:34
but it's not bad i mean it's uh... it definitely works and then uh..
19:39
of course it has molly on the sides and the front so i attached a condor molly pouch on the side here to
19:46
put my binoculars in so for the money you know this is a great option
20:03
that's not going to cost you a lot guys thanks for watching the prepared wanderer
