What's up, Wanderers? Prepared to wander out in the woods today, and I've got a backpack review for you
1:07
that I think you'll want to see, so stick around. So, the backpack that I'm wearing today is from 3V Gear
1:17
This is their Sovereign Backpack. This is the biggest backpack that they make currently
1:23
and it's a new pack for them. They went into this new line called the Redline
1:29
and the Redline has some really interesting backpacks, and this one is no different
1:35
It's got some really cool features to it. It's a 50-liter internal frame backpack
1:44
that is designed for backpacking, camping, hiking, and things of that nature
1:49
So, if you're looking for a bigger bag that's going to get you through a weekend
1:54
this may be the one for you. Right off the bat, let's talk about what I'm wearing
2:00
and how it feels. We have really nice padded shoulder straps, and it has, if you can see this with my jacket
2:10
it has a lot of adjustment with the sternum strap as far as going up and down
2:19
You can move this all the way down. So, if you don't want this thing up on your throat
2:23
maybe you're a taller guy or gal and you need something a little bit more adjustment
2:28
this definitely has it. Also, it has a built-in whistle into the sternum strap buckle
2:35
There we go
2:46
That's not too annoying. D-rings for attaching some gear, maybe running a hydration loop through
2:56
You have straps up top that are load lifters that you can pull in the pack
3:03
and that helps bring the load up and onto your hips more
3:09
Let's look at the waist belt. MOLLE attachment points on the waist belt
3:23
Good padding on the waist belt, not overly done, but certainly enough to help you distribute the load
3:32
and make it comfortable and not dig into your hips. They went with a little bit narrower belt
3:39
This is probably maybe 1 1⁄2 inch, 1 1⁄4 inch webbing. Lots of adjustment in this
3:49
I can easily fit this over my winter coat
4:03
All right, let's go over some of the features of the pack. Grab handle, nice big loop, easy to grab
4:11
Top pocket that is fleece-lined, so this is for glasses, electronics, things you want to grab quickly out of your pack
4:23
MOLLE webbing on the sides, MOLLE webbing on the front. You've got one big L-shaped pocket here
4:37
and then you have the main pocket up here. You've got your side elastic pockets
4:47
You see that? Those are for your water bottles. We've got a water bottle over here, MOLLE
4:58
Right there. Adjustment straps that help cinch the load down on the sides
5:06
two on each side. On the bottom of the pack
5:17
there are these straps that you can place a bedroll or sleeping pad
5:29
something like that, maybe your tent, but they have these G-hooks on them
5:33
and you can easily remove them and get to the item that you've got cinched down
5:38
Now, what's really interesting about this bag is that this feature comes with it free of charge
5:46
You've got a built-in rain fly right there, so you're able to..
5:52
or pack cover, I should say, so you've got a built-in pack cover
5:56
that you can quickly cover your pack with when it starts raining. Plus, there's a drain hole built in
6:01
so if this gets wet, you get some air circulation, you don't have to worry about mildew or any of that
6:09
Flipping the bag around, you can see the padding and the yoke system on this
6:17
Really ample room from this pad to this pad. There's plenty of width
6:24
so I think for people who have bigger shoulders, this is going to be a bonus
6:29
The yoke system here is adjustable, so you can actually go all the way down to this slot
6:33
If you're a shorter person, this is going to help you adjust the pack to your height
6:37
If you're taller, you can go up to the maximum, which I have it on here
6:41
There's another grab handle built in right here. Also, you can notice there is a hydration access port
6:47
so you can put hydration inside your pack and then access it
6:51
run the tube out here onto your shoulder strap. Waist belt, you can see the padding on it
6:59
Very nicely done. Some grooved channels in it to help with airflow
7:06
The belt is not removable. Take note of that. And then this has a frame sheet inside of it
7:17
not a frame. So there is a plastic frame sheet that gives this its shape
7:25
and helps maintain some rigidity. But that also helps save with weight
7:32
because it's not an overly heavy suspension system. And I'm not sure how much weight I have loaded in this thing
7:39
I have it loaded for a typical summer camping trip with a tarp, sleeping bag, cook kit
7:46
and all the little add-ons I take with me. And it's carrying it very easily
7:55
I would say I can't even be at 20 pounds of loaded weight
8:01
And that's dry weight. There's no water bladder in this. So it's carrying it very, very well
8:08
Now, the pouches. Let's talk about the pouches. This pouch is not 3V gear
8:14
This is just an off-brand Rip-Away medical pouch that I had. And I wanted to run a medical pouch on the front of this
8:24
So I thought this would be a good one to throw on there
8:28
since it's black and it matches the bag. The side pouches, these are 3V gear
8:34
These are their new side pouches that they come out with. They don't come with the backpack
8:39
so none of these pouches come with them. These are add-ons. And that's kind of what's nice about this MOLLE system
8:44
all over the bag, that you can add your own pouch system to what you need and what you think you're going to use
8:50
And these new pouches are really nice. They hold all the more three-dimensional gear
8:57
small gear that I have. So I've got some braided paracord in there for a ridge line
9:02
I've got my candle lantern. Inside, they have elastic looping so you can organize some of the small gear
9:09
And there's also a pocket with Velcro to put more flat items in
9:16
You can see that. So, really nice. And they come with these utility clips
9:26
that allow you just to clip right in to the side of the MOLLE
9:33
if you can see that right there. So really easy to take these on and off
9:41
And they add, by buying these pouches, and they're not very expensive
9:45
I want to say they're under $10, maybe a little bit more
9:50
But they add a lot of modularity in storage space to my pack
9:57
and allow me to organize things a little bit better. Now, we haven't even gotten into the main part of the pack yet
10:03
So let's do that. Really cool lining that they put inside this
10:13
I love that this kind of off-white topo map design allows you to see inside the pack real easily
10:25
Gives you good visual recognition of your gear because you can see inside it
10:31
It's not just a big black hole. There's a really ample hydration pocket back here
10:36
with a tab to hang your hydration bladder. So that's a big plus
10:43
Lots of gear in here. I've got my cook kit. I've got a shelter system
10:52
I've got a woobie. And then I've got a sleeping bag way at the bottom
10:58
And there's another piece of storage. There's an elastic pocket on top of the hydration pocket
11:05
You can see that. Plus, there's more. There is elastic looping
11:19
that's in a MOLLE configuration on the front side of the pack so you can actually put in some pouches
11:24
or maybe clip in some smaller gear. So definitely a lot of unique storage solutions
11:34
inside the main portion of this bag. And that's really it for the main section
11:40
It's not a lot. It is very, very voluminous. It swallows a lot of gear
11:50
And then one of the more interesting pieces or more interesting features on this bag
11:55
is this front panel pocket, which I'll do now. So you unzip this
12:01
pull that back, and you've got basically an admin pocket right here
12:08
This goes all the way down to the bottom. I've got toilet paper and some 550 cord
12:18
Here I've got a beaner with some webbing that I can hang the pack with
12:23
There are slots for pens, flashlights. You can carry your maps in here
12:30
Definitely some room. Down here I've got a hygiene kit. So for more of the smaller flat items
12:42
this pocket's going to be good. All right, let's talk about quality on this bag
13:01
So I've used this now for about a week or two. I took it out on a trip last weekend
13:10
It was car camping, so it wasn't any serious backpacking. I didn't really carry it any serious miles
13:18
But I've been hiking today with it, and the quality of it
13:23
at least the comfort, has been spot on. It's been a very comfortable pack
13:27
with the load that I have in it. And as far as quality, everything seems to be holding up well
13:33
No stitching, no loose webbing or loose threads, nothing like that. Everything is sewn very well
13:41
I know that 3V really does support their customers, so if you have a problem with one of their bags
13:49
you can contact them. They will definitely help you either get a replacement or a refund
13:55
They have phenomenal customer service, and I have never had an issue with any of their bags
14:00
Their stuff has always held up very well. The pack itself is, like I said, 50 liters
14:08
and it's about 4.5 pounds empty. So to me, it's somewhere in between
14:16
a lightweight three-day bag and a more traditional, heavier backpack
14:26
It's in that sweet spot right in between. So I think it's going to be a great pack for a lot of people
14:35
If you're looking for something that's more long-term as a bug-out bag or a vehicle bag
14:40
this certainly isn't very expensive. These are under $100. So if you're looking for an economical bag
14:47
that has a lot of features and has good construction and can carry a load very well
14:52
and carry a lot of stuff, carries a lot of gear, this is something that you're going to want to look at. Now..
15:05
What I really like about the bag so far is I love the top opener on it
15:10
and how I can open that top and see right down into the contents of the bag
15:15
I don't have a lot of storm collars or things that I have to dig through
15:20
or flaps or any of that kind of stuff to figure out
15:24
I just unzip it, I look down, I know where my stuff's at
15:28
My stuff stacks up very neatly inside. It's very organized. I have other backpacks that are
15:36
probably more expensive than this one. But this one by far is the easiest to load
15:43
and to get in and out of on a trip. And that's what I found out with using it last weekend
15:49
is that I'm able to store my stuff in it pretty easily and get to it very quickly
15:54
and keep it very organized. There's just a place for everything and that's what makes this backpack great
16:01
I think 3V Gear has done an excellent job with this Redline
16:05
and the Sovereign Pack is just phenomenal. And I'm really appreciative that they sent this to me
