have you ever wondered why Earth isn't a
0:01
frozen wasteland despite being millions
0:04
of miles from the sun the answer lies in
0:06
a fascinating natural phenomenon that's
0:08
crucial to life as we know it the
0:10
greenhouse effect Earth's natural
0:12
thermostat earth's climate is a delicate
0:14
balance carefully regulated by natural
0:17
processes one of the most crucial
0:19
mechanisms keeping our planet habitable
0:21
is the greenhouse effect the greenhouse
0:24
effect is a natural process that warms
0:26
the Earth's surface it occurs when gases
0:28
in the atmosphere trap heat radiating
0:30
from Earth towards space these heat
0:33
trapping gases are called greenhouse
0:35
gases greenhouse gases allow sunlight to
0:38
enter the atmosphere freely when the
0:40
sunlight strikes the Earth's surface
0:42
some of it is reflected back toward
0:43
space as infrared radiation or heat
0:46
these gases then absorb this infrared
0:48
radiation and trap the heat in the
0:50
atmosphere radiating much of this energy
0:53
back to the Earth's surface oceans and
0:54
atmosphere causing further warming
0:57
this process works much like the glass
0:59
walls of a greenhouse which allow
1:00
sunlight to enter but keep heat from
1:02
escaping hence the name greenhouse
1:05
effect the primary greenhouse gases in
1:08
Earth's atmosphere are water vapor
1:10
carbon dioxide methane nitrous oxide and
1:14
ozone of these water vapor is the most
1:17
abundant and impactful however carbon
1:21
dioxide is the most famous due to its
1:23
increase from human activities it's
1:26
important to understand that the
1:27
greenhouse effect is essential for life
1:28
on Earth without it the average
1:31
temperature of our planet would be about
1:33
-18° C far too cold for most life forms
1:37
the greenhouse effect keeps the Earth's
1:39
average temperature at a much more
1:41
comfortable 15°
1:43
C however human activities particularly
1:46
the burning of fossil fuels and
1:48
deforestation have increased the
1:50
concentration of greenhouse gases in our
1:52
atmosphere this enhancement of the
1:55
natural greenhouse effect has led to
1:57
what we now call global warming or
1:59
climate change understanding the
2:01
greenhouse effect is crucial as we face
2:03
the challenges of climate change it
2:06
helps us appreciate the delicate balance
2:07
of our planet systems and the impact our
2:10
actions can have on them by grasping
2:12
this fundamental process we can better
2:15
comprehend the urgency of addressing
2:16
climate change and work towards
2:18
sustainable solutions for our planet's
2:20
future the greenhouse effect is a
2:22
natural process that keeps Earth warm by
2:24
trapping heat in the atmosphere thanks
2:26
to greenhouse gases like water vapor and
2:28
carbon
2:29
dioxide without the greenhouse effect
2:31
Earth's average temperature would be
2:33
about 18° too cold for most life instead
2:37
it maintains a comfortable average of
2:39
15° while essential for life human
2:42
activities have enhanced the greenhouse
2:44
effect leading to global warming
2:47
understanding this process is crucial
2:48
for addressing climate change and
2:50
ensuring a sustainable future thank you
2:53
for watching our video on the greenhouse
2:54
effect we hope you now have a better
2:57
understanding of this crucial natural
2:59
process and its impact on our planet
