Aristotle was born in 384 BCE in the city of Stagira in the Greek region of Macedonia. His father, Nicomachus, was a physician to King Amyntas III of Macedonia, which might explain Aristotle's later interest in biology and the natural sciences. Tragically, both of Aristotle's parents died when he was young, and he was placed under the guardianship of a relative, Proxenus of Atarneus.
