Christa Pike Asked Last Meal Money Be Given to Homeless Before Botched Execution

Christa Pike's request regarding her last meal wasn't about herself. Reports claim that Pike asked for her last meal money to be given to the homeless, per the New York Times. Before her execution, Pike was offered a last meal with a $20 allocation. However, she requested that the money be used to buy pizza for homeless people in downtown Nashville. The next morning, Pike was set to be executed at Riverbend Maximum Security Institution. Unfortunately, that execution attempt went terribly wrong. She complained of pain in her arm after being injected with lethal substances. Pike became unconscious and was later snoring, prompting emergency actions. Following the mishap, she was rushed to a local hospital. Reports indicate that Pike is still unconscious and requires a ventilator. While it’s unclear what went wrong, the Tennessee Department of Correction maintains they followed protocol. That protocol, however, doesn’t specify what to do if an execution fails.
