Thanks to this, you can officially ditch your wallet, tickets, and even now your keys
0:06
This is all thanks to NFC technology. You've probably used it to pay for things, get into
0:10
events, and even send your contact to someone else. But how can I get rid of this janitor
0:14
key ring with it? Well, NFC technology has made previous lame smart blocks my favorite
0:19
piece of tech of whatever year this is. Let me explain. NFC stands for Near Field Communication
0:24
It's a short-range wireless technology that allows devices to exchange data securely with
0:29
a simple tap. Well, after years of development, the Connectivity Standards Alliance, the group
0:33
behind Matter and Thread, your smart home standardization, has released Aliro. Aliro is
0:38
the standard, NFC is the tech, and combined, you can now open your door with just a tap
0:43
But let's get a little more technical. Aliro is a universal mobile access standard for smart locks
0:49
It is an open global industry standard that allows smartphones and wearables to function
0:53
as secure digital keys. That means whether you're on a Samsung, Google, Apple, or something else
0:58
this can be your key. And you can send keys to any of these devices. In the past, you could do
1:04
something similar with Apple Home Key, which is pretty darn similar to a Lero. It uses NFC tech
1:09
tap to unlock, etc. But you would be stuck to all Apple tech. Now you can send your key from an Apple
1:16
to a Samsung. Thanks, Connectivity Standards Alliance. As someone who's tried smart locks in
1:21
the past, I was pretty skeptical that this magical Lero standard would improve, well, anything. Years
1:27
back, I tried out this Wyze smart lock and I just had to stop using it because it's big, bulky
1:32
ugly. It takes so many batteries. And one time it even opened up on its own. But the main reason I
1:38
stopped using this supposedly smart lock is just because of how much friction there was There was an app that was separate You had to unlock it even unlock it Sometimes it wouldn work Geo fences were all off Fast forward back to today I been testing this Nuki Smart Lock Deadbolt
1:52
since before the Aliro standard existed. It's sleek, works well, fits most locks
1:57
and has a rechargeable battery. But for me, there was still a bit of friction until
2:02
Aliro dropped. Once the new standard hit the public, the company came out with a new keypad with NFC
2:07
This $180 add-on worked with my existing smart lock to get Alira working
2:12
Now I can say this thing is pretty awesome. It made it Apple Home Key eligible, so I could just tap to unlock
2:18
and I could share the key with my friends and family that aren't in the Apple-flavored ecosystem
2:23
All the previous features worked great, and the best part? Tap to unlock
2:27
And with a built-in fingerprint scanner on the keypad, rechargeable battery in the deadbolt
2:31
and a pretty sleek design, this Nuki ecosystem has taken something that I considered an unusable piece of smart home tech
2:38
into one of my favorite things of the year. Now, the one caveat in some of these smart locks
2:42
in the Alero system is that you have to have a smart home hub, something like the Apple HomePod mini
2:47
That was the case for me. Since these devices aren't connected physically by any cables, they require communication with one another
2:53
just like in the Matter system. Bouncing off the smart home hub, this is where the Alero standard has shined
2:58
Since Alero is unrelated to Wi-Fi, Alero and Matter simply mean that the device
3:03
has to be able to connect to one of these Matter routers. It's an optionality, but locks with the Liro can also have Wi-Fi as well
3:10
Now while this technology isn't the most exciting thing out there It actually has improved my life in the day-to-day, you know, I just tap
3:17
I don't have to carry around all this stuff anymore But what do you think? Do you like hearing about these more underground technologies
