Rosemary Kennedy, the sister of President John F. Kennedy, spent much of her life in isolation. As a child she exhibited developmental delays and struggled academically and socially. Concerned about the impact on the family's reputation, her father, Joseph P. Kennedy Sr., approved a lobotomy in 1941 without informing her or her mother. The procedure left her permanently disabled, unable to walk or speak clearly.
